You have a much older one. These "smart" features were added in later models. I have an 8 series, although they might have rolled out on the 7 series? The X should be having these issues. I know it happens because after an update the "soap opera" effect will return and I need to go into the settings and reset both the color and motion settings.

All you have to do is apply the software updates and these things get rolled out. I've heard if you simply never let it connect to the internet, or port block it, you can cut down on the ads. But there are important bug fixes that come with the software updates, so that's a mixed bag.

Newer LG tvs also are constantly analyzing what you are doing through image recognition, which is how they serve ads even if you're not using their tuner. I've had it actually show ads over something thats being piped in from a completely different external source because it's doing image recognition.

They'll also play ads in normal places like menus.
I was very much in the market for an LG C2 or G2 later this year, but I've got a real principle issue with ads being crammed down my throat. I'll have to give that a second thought.

None of the built in stands are trash.
The non removable non height adjustable stand is trash. I rather have no stand than that and that's why I went VESA and I highly recommend everyone do the same. Even the most premium monitor arms won't even come close to the $400 extra guac apple is charging.

Yeah sorry but I think most of the people that own an iMac would disagree. Nothing wrong with that stand.

For HDR, I had asked around, and the current owner confirmed that the ASD does playback HDR, and is capable of display wide colour gamut. Consider peak brightness for ASD is 600 nits (400 nits on the Dell), it should be more capable for HDR.

So I think you can cross out HDR as a con from ASD and compare to the Dell is actually a pro.

It doesn't play HDR content. Or, to be more exact, it seems that for some reason it allows HDR content to be played, but it won't be properly displayed.
The ASD doesn't have enough contrast ratio to properly display HDR content anyway.

Is the Studio display a thunderbolt hub, like the 27" Ultrafine is?

AFAIC see the studio only has one TB port which has to be connected to the computer.

The LGs have a second TB port which can be used for additional TB devices, making it a Thunderbolt hub.

The Studio seems to be a USB hub.

ultrafine 5k has one tb port same as this

The studio display ports have a higher through put than the LG from what I understand.
But won't connect a Thunderbolt drive I assume?

Maybe unless the Studio Display ports are USB 4 ?

i am not clear about relationship between USB4 and TB4. I know USB4 has spec max of 40GB/s, like TB, but don't know if that means a USB4 port wound mount a Thunderbolt drive.

From the specs:
  • One upstream Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port for host (with 96W host charging)
  • Three downstream USB-C ports (up to 10Gb/s) for connecting peripherals, storage, and networking
So I'd assume connecting a Thunderbolt drive wouldn't work (not at full-speed anyway) i'm not sure if a Thunderbolt drive would work at a reduced speed over USB-C.

No Thunderbolt is a different protocol. Won't work at reduced speed on a USB connection.

My 23.7" LG Ultrafine has two TB ports. Weird that the 27" only has one.

Thanks for correcting me.
The 5K has only 1 since sending the extra signal for 77% more pixels uses up most of the bandwidth. Technically, had Apple used a Thunderbolt 4 port they could have made the other ports Thunderbolt, but they wouldn’t be much faster than the 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 ports on the existing ASD.

They should just use USB-C 4 ports for all ports on Monitors and computers. They should stop being cheap using only Thunderbolt 3 & USB-A ports.

Nothing 'trash' about the tilt stand. It's excellent. If you need height adjustment one can use a riser or get a Vesa mount if they don't want to spend the $400.

In the end I returned the nano texture and took the standard.
Yes, I'm a little crazy, but I couldn't bear to have bought a $ 2k 5k panel and not have the sharpest text possible.
I made too many comparisons with the definition of the imac and in the end I made up my mind.
In fact, the "standard" appears a little brighter, a little more saturated and visibly sharper

What if you did not have your iMac to compare to side by side, would you have still returned the nano and get the glossy?

Mmmm, you could say the same thing about Dell. It certainly won't be full on HDR on XDR display, but I'd imagine it's better than on the Dell monitor.

I didn't mention the Dell.

There is no such thing as "full" or even "half baked" HDR with a 1000:1 contrast ratio in any shape or form (after all that's the one characteristic of HDR content "HDR" refers to, ie "high dynamic range"), and the results will most likely be inaccurate on the Studio Display.

To properly watch HDR content in monitor form, right now you don't have a lot of options unfortunately (nope the XDR is inappropriate as well).

good question.
The nano, turned off, looks more "professional"; the gloss looks more "apple".

Maybe I would have returned it anyway: I did the comparison only because I read everywhere that it was less defined, less saturated. I asked myself: is it true? I didn't trust and thought it was an unnoticeable difference ... for this I compared, first or naked eye, then with macro.

The difference can also be seen with the naked eye! very close to a white background you can see the matte micro grooves. The gloss, on the other hand, is totally uniform. I think the writer "take the dwarf only if you can't knock down the light" is right. Because the best experience in terms of brightness and definition is with the gloss.

Here is my ASD review and thoughts.

My first Mac was a Mini paired with a 20" ACD. I had that setup for 10 years and then moved onto a 5k iMac in 2018. My third setup is now the ASD with an M1 Mac Mini.

Aesthetically I prefer the smaller visual footprint of the display versus a large iMac. I also prefer the idea of having to just bring my Mini into Apple in case it needs service versus placing a huge iMac into a box and carrying it there and back.

I'm using the nano option. I have 7 large windows behind my screen. Once I switched over to using Dark Reader with Chrome the glare behind me became a huge issue. The nano is a God send. Yes it makes text a touch softer. However it doesn't bother me one bit and the lack of glare on the screen now is extremely well worth it for me.

It was immediately apparent to me once I started using the ASD that the screen was brighter compared to my 5k iMac. The Max Tech review on YouTube simply confirmed this.

The build quality of the display is stunning. It reminds me so much of my 20" ACD. I have heard stories about how terrible the LG UF can be regarding wobble during typing. This display will not budge whatsoever during use.

We all know the webcam has an issue. I am hopeful and optimistic that Apple will fix this in a software update as they said they would.

I don't think the speakers are anything special. I have cheap $20 2.1 speakers and they sound much better.

Something that isn't brought up enough is the advantage of Apple support regarding displays. If I have any issues with the ASD I can simply bring it to my local Apple store. Good luck dealing with customer service from another display company. I also opted for yearly AC and that gives me peace of mind which is invaluable.

I feel the complaints about lack the of mini-LED, ProMotion, and HDR are ridiculous honestly. All those things are coming in the Studio Display Pro very soon which will be far more expensive. It was important that Apple was able to offer us a display at less than $2,000. Regarding those things specifically, people here have complained about text with mini-LED in dark mode. I have ProMotion on my iPad Pro and never notice it. And I'm not sure HDR is really that important in my specific use case.

I do feel the premium for the height adjustable stand is silly. However you can also simply use a riser or a Vesa mount if you need such a thing. I have a 27" high desk with an additional 5" for a second level so ergonomically the standard tilt stand is perfect for me. If that weren't the case I'd just get a riser and stick the Mini below it.

In terms of value I feel the display is $300 more than it should be. Consider it the Apple tax. The LG UF should not be the same price 6 years later. But the 5k display market is so scarce that our options are super limited if we want this 5k resolution.

If I had to complain about anything it would be that this display does not come in a 32" variety. Hopefully that will happen at some point as 27" isn't big enough for everyone and the Pro XDR is too expensive for many.

I'm very grateful Apple is back in the display game for those of us that wanted something that wasn't $5,000. This is long overdue.

On a final note, here is my first Apple setup and my latest.
I agree, people will always find something to complain about. $1300 would have been a perfect price, but just like any known brand, you pay for the name. When the new XDR comes out it'll also cost $5-6k and people will complain about that as well.

My two displays look awesome and I'm happy.

I owned an iMac, and I certainly do agree.

I wish I had ordered the iMac with the VESA option, and didn’t think twice about ordering the ASD with VESA.

It’s just too bad the VESA option looks like such a hack, covering half the Apple logo.
