Not surprised it is a jack of all trades master of none. When I saw the feature set I had a feeling it would be average at best at all the features.

You are paying for the camera, the glued on CPU, the speakers etc. so what suffers is everything especially the screen.

Apple could have just focused on just being a good monitor.

I will stick to companies that just focus on providing a good monitor.
Yup. My hope is that now that the 27" iMac is gone, other companies will be introducing 5K monitors to fill the gap.

I want to get a Mac Studio but need a display at least as nice as the one in my 27" iMac. And the Studio Display is overpriced for what you get.

Apple needs a 5K display at a sub-$2K price point, and this is it. If we are to believe analyst Ross Young, a higher-spec 27-in ProMotion panel is coming later this year, presumably to be introduced alongside the new Apple Silicon Mac Pro.
Do you really think Apple can't do HDR and Promotion in a 27" for less than $2000?

lmao no hdr? standard ips! 60hz. $400 extra to adjust height.

apple fooled you lol.

my crappy ass $300 monitor has 165hz and HDR. its **** HDR but it‘s better than nothing lol. there are no excuses apple. only interested in ripping people off.

if you are going to buy a mac mini or studio just get a half decent and much cheaper monitor off amazon.

Which $499 5K 27 “ LG are you referring to? Definitely will cancel and order that one.
It’s not as sexy but this is so much better for the money and so much more monitor

Even if I am worried about the camera quality, I would really like to know, especially from all of you ranting, what other options are available on the market, offering 5K at 27", for a perfect Retina scaling.
I think that the answer is 0...
Could the display offer more? Yes, certainly. Is it despite that a great display with very good viewing angles and color calibration? Yes. Does it have great speakers? Apparently yes. Does it have a good camera? Potentially yes, if the software update comes (and I have high confidence in Apple that they will deliver it in time).
So, just to be honest, yes, I would love an HDR display, but this would cost even more.
For me at least this is going to be a great display. I don't understand the score that the Verge gave to the display, but I don't really care about it either.
Of course the camera quality must be improved!

I mean promotion is basically 144 hertz and HDH is HDR….. you can get Both on $300 monitors for BenQ , Samsung , LQ, Lenovo , HP…. I can continue for a long time.

Resolution is a pretty important spec for a display. The most important spec, really. And it isn't just a question of 4K vs 5K...macOS doesn't scale properly to a 27" 4K display and looks terrible as a result.

And the rest may be "meh" for you, but is very important for many, many others.
More important than colour accuracy?

keep trying to convince yourself

there‘s no excuse for no HDR. this display is expensive and still apple couldnt do hdr? you can buy cheap ass monitors with hdr. but hey maybe apple will add it in a software update and you’ll be happy.

Hey Apple, please listen closely - deadlines are artificial and made up. If a product isn't ready by the deadline you yourself set, then it is not ready. Period.

There's nothing wrong with announcing a new product; just maybe, don't over promise and under deliver. Keynote it, and say "this is coming by X months from now" and then make sure it's really actually polished before shipping.

Lord knows there's already massive chip shortages, that are being additionally compounded by the Ukraine/Russia situation, so Apple probably isn't even going to be able to fulfill orders for at least a couple months. We've seen it with every single product introduced in the last year: iPhone 13 Pro, the M1 Pro/M1 Max machines... and now the Studio Display.

We've also seen sloppy, rushed products pushed in the same time period; features advertised for hardware and software that ultimately weren't ready for market until several months after they dropped. It took Apple almost a half year to actually deliver Universal Control after Monterey was available, despite it being touted as one the big reasons to update. This should not be the case for the premiums Apple charges for products.

Take the time to make the product "insanely great," and then release it.

LG Ultrafine 5K. 300$ less, includes a height adjustable stand, a 1080p camera, a VESA mount, a removable power cord. Except the less polished design, it’s practically all the positive things from the Studio display without all the compromises

Hanson said that "it's these kinds of 'hidden' extra costs that try a lot of peoples' patience when it comes to Apple."

This is a really good point that I don't know I've considered. The "Apple Tax" used to be justified by all the extra stuff you got from Apple but not from the competition. IE, you got iLife and iWork at no extra cost when you bought an Apple computer or iPad or iPhone.

But since Tim Cook took over, the Apple Tax has been totally unjustified. Apple has delivered products that are roughly equivalent to what the competition offers at vastly higher prices.

There's nothing special about AirPods, HomePod, the Pencil, or this display. They're all comparable to everything else, but at vastly higher prices.

This thing is kind of garbage at that price, IMO. At $500-$700 it might be worth it. But there are too many great sub-$1,000 monitors to waste money on this thing.

Do you have a link to a $400 5K display with great color accuracy? Or even one that is 4K and will at least output 600 nits? I'm asking because I'm interested in one. I'm looking at adding another 4k or 5k display but haven't found a non-gaming one (I need good color accuracy) for anywhere near that price.

There's this Dell Ultrasharp I'm looking at (https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/sho...3qe/apd/210-bdpf/monitors-monitor-accessories) but it's currently over $600 and isn't nearly as bright as the Apple Studio display (400 nits). Any other suggestions?

5K scales better in macOS than 4K. There aren’t any $400 5K monitors.

Fair point to both of you, I don't need ultra-sharp, ultra-bright nor ultra-color accurate for what I do - So I tend to not be persuaded by these aspects of it as much. While picture quality is obviously nice to have - I tend to pay more attention to size, refresh rate, I/O - and in this case speakers / mic & camera - as these features will have a more direct impact on my use case. I also really enjoy the ultra-wide curved monitors, and find it superior to using 2 separate monitors, which is also more necessity for me.

Well, I use Apple products and the Studio Display offers exactly what most Apple users want. You might argue about what Apple could do better, but this will not change the fact of what is currently on the market. For people getting the Mac Studio, the Studio Display seems the best choice.

Spatial Audio is a straight up unnecessary gimmick that no one asked for or needs along the lines of Quadraphonic Sound, high compression levels, and listening to stereo music with a surround sound system. Even some of the multi-channel SACD's are of dubious value. Most want to hear the songs as the artist recorded them in unmodified form. Artists take pride in their work and want their material presented as it was recorded. In the video world the equivalent is reformatting videos to fit TV formats instead of living with the black bars.

Does anyone in power at Apple actually use and test these products before they ship?

there are three possible answers, all bad:

1. No senior person uses pre-release products and the company is now run by number-crunching suits
2. senior people use pre-release products and can’t tell when things are crap
3. Senior people know they are shipping crap and don’t care or don’t think the media will call them on it.

in the age of zoom and hybrid work, how could they possible ship a display with a crappy camera?

if I was Tim, I would dig into this. It shows something is deeply broken in the company.

The more I look into this monitor, the more I believe another "monitor" with miniLED & ProMotion is coming from Apple this year. Whether that "monitor" is a larger iMac with miniLED & ProMotion, or just another Studio Display Pro / Pro XDR will be revealed.

Remember the rumor from Ross Young detailed the zones and tech: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/02/14/imac-pro-2022-june-launch/

The rudimentary math = 0.2mm (Mini LED size) x 4000 = 800mm = 31.49 inches
