I actually got the same problem with my Belkin VR Cable and PC. Motherboard is a bit older (forgot the name, CPU is 3770k), GPU is a RTX 2080. Display wont start on a fresh boot, reconnecting the cable on the display makes it turn on immediately.

Do you think a HDMI Dummy Plug might make it work since Legetrekt „fixed“ it by connecting a different display as well via hdmi?

The dummy plug is typically for situations where for whatever reason the display driver isn't getting initialized at startup. It tricks the PC into thinking a display is attached. In lelgetrekt's case, it sounded like the BIOS or something was not seeing the ASD as being attached at startup which is why I suggested it. They also make DisplayPort dummy plugs for the same purpose. The easiest way to see if it'll help is by hooking up another monitor or TV to the hdmi port. If it results in the computer starting up correctly and showing the login on the ASD, then you can use a dummy plug.

Connecting the ol 1080p TV indeed makes the studio display wake from itself at the windows login screen. Thats totally fine. Going to order a HDMI Dummy Plug now :)

Thank you!

Try the other TB4 port. According to the manual, you're plugged into the correct TB4 port but worth trying the other TB4 port. Also try a different port on the back of the GPU. According to the Z590i Vision D manual, there should be BIOS settings for Thunderbolt present. Do you have a separate monitor you can hook up to look at settings (Thunderbolt Control Center, Device Manager, Nvidia Control Panel)?
Hooray!! Thanks for the help guys. I have finally found that freaking thunderbolt setting in bios. I had to switch integrated graphics to enabled instead of auto. Plus a bunch of few more vaguely named settings were changed. Only after that Thunderbolt menu appeared and after enabling thunderbolt the display worked straight away in 5k@60hz. What a hassle, it took me literally hours of desperation xD

I'll try to make brightness control work soon. (no bootcamp drivers yet)

It might be the problem but unfortunately it doesn't have any kind of that feature in BIOS(i think it does available in THB4).Thank you anyway ;)
Did you ever find a solution. I have exactly the same setup and I also don't get audio or webcam functionality.

For my work laptop (an old Dell latitude), I needed something plug-and-play, and something that wouldn't require installation of additional drivers or system tweaks.

Happy to report that the recommended Club3D CAC-1334 offers just that.

No, the speakers don't work in Windows nor does the webcam. But I use a work headset for sound/mic and I have a webcam on the laptop itself, so I use that on the rare occasion I video conference.

I can run the laptop at 1440p 60 Hz. Doesn't take advantage of the 5k Studio Display, but this laptop is so old it can't even do 4k (at least not without dropping the refresh rate to 30 Hz).

It appears the Studio Display uses thunderbolt, so that being the case, you'll need a PC that has thunderbolt 3 or 4. I wonder about the compatibility of using TB and not connecting the GPU directly to the monitor.

As for cards, consider any of the 30 series nvidia GPUs, and for AMD, the 6500 xt or a 6700xt
The iPad Air 5 has only USB 3.2 but can output 5K to the Studio Display. In my experience, an Apple Thunderbolt cable (3 or 4), a generic Thunderbolt 3 cable, or a generic USB-4 cable will work with the iPad Air 5, but not a generic Thunderbolt 4 cable, so perhaps Apple has customized the USB-C port on the iPad Air 5. Or maybe it’s a matter of experimenting with cables if a particular setup doesn’t appear to work. A generic Thunderbolt 4 cable connected to an Apple Studio Display will charge the iPad Air 5, but won’t display content on the ASD.

These two cables have recently showed up on Amazon that appear to be good alternatives for the Belkin cable. Not sure if anyone has tried them yet. I ordered the Fairikabe cable and will report back if it works.

WJESOG DisplayPort to USB C with USB Cable Adapter

Fairikabe DisplayPort to USB C

They both appear to be DisplayPort 1.2 rather than DisplayPort 1.4 but they should still work fine with DSC to display 5K on the ASD but that will need to be tested.

Just an update - I tried the Fairkabe cable today - it does work when plugged directly from the PC to the ASD - monitor lights up, camera and sound work. However, it does not play well with the CableDeconn switch box. The PC does not subsequently light up after switching the display inputs. I've seen this with other cables and switch boxes but not with either the Belkin cable or the Cable Matters cable so either of those continue to be my recommendations. I plan to return the Fairikabe cable and try the WJESOG one to see if it behaves differently.

EDIT: I tried the WJESOG cable as well and it behaves the same way. Works but not with the CableDeconn switch.

Good to know! Sometimes my thunderbolt cable is a little finicky, so it's nice to have a back up, I'll give that a try, does that cable work with the bootcamp control too?

I was able to figure out how to get the Thunderbolt output of my Corsair One PC working. Long story short, there are in fact two mini-DisplayPort inputs concealed behind knockouts on the backplate that must be connected to the GPU outputs to tunnel DP over Thunderbolt, which is pretty common except the documentation made no mention of these concealed inputs. In any case, this let me try out driving the ASD via Thunderbolt rather than via the Belkin cable I've been using. As long as I only hook up one of the 3080 TI DP outputs to a mini-DP in, everything runs fine, probably as DP 1.4 DSC over Thunderbolt. Sound, brightness, and the ports work fine too. However, if I hook up a second mini-DP to DP cable in order to get uncompressed DP1.4 dual HBR2 over TB, the screen goes dark. The TB controller is the Maple Ridge JHL8540 so it should be able to handle dual HBR2 over TB but I suspect that the Nvidia driver doesn't know how to handle it. Anyone with Maple Ridge TB4 having success with uncompressed dual tile?
Did you manage to figure this out? It looks like I have the same issue (but it worked with 2 cables so far) with a Titan Ridge card and 3090...

I'm kind of late to this one, and am reading through the thread, but not entirely clear on the best options. I've been given a HP Elitebook laptop for work with one of my clients which I have to use for security reasons.

Is there a recommended cable or switch to allow me to use an ASD with it, ideally with webcam and speaker support?

The ports it has are:
  • USB 3.1 Type-C port with Thunderbolt support
  • HDMI 1.4

Hi there, I am successfully running an Apple Studio Display with the Moshi DP to USB-C cable through the Display Port 1.4 of an ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 24 GB OC that‘s plugged into an ASUS Rog Strix X570-E Gaming WIFI II motherboard with a full 5k resolution.

Also the LG Ultrafine 5K 27MD5KL-B works for me with the same setup, but only at 4K max resolution.

Unfortunately, on both devices the speakers and webcams don‘t work and the brightness can‘t be adjusted on Win11 (as often mentioned in the comments earlier).

An important note on using the Moshi cable with the Apple Studio Display:
I had to put an isolation tape on the USB-C plug, since the metal/aluminum plug caused some voltage interferences and showed scary glitches on the Apple Studio Display when getting in touch with its aluminum case. This wasn‘t the case for the LG Ultrafine 5k, since it is made of plastic.

My thoughts and question now:

I would like to make the speakers, webcam and brightness adjustment and 5k resolution work on the PC and thought about switching to an ASUS ProArt X570 Creator WIFI motherboard, which has Thunderbolt 4 support.

1) Has anyone experience with this setup or is currently running it?

2) Does it work through the Thunderbolt 4 port of the ASUS ProArt X570 Creator WIFI board as I am assuming and is the switch worth it?

3) Or is the WJESOG/Farekabe or the Cable Matters cable the answer to all my questions, without having to switch to the ASUS ProArt X570 Creator board with Thunderbolt 4 support?

I‘d very much appreciate your hints or feedback!

EDIT: I just ordered the Cable Matters cable and will report back how it's going.

Thanks, I'll get the laptop unboxed and give it a go tomorrow.
I have the same, EliteBook for work which I got a few weeks ago. And it's hit and miss with the ASD for some reason. Even though it has full TB support, plugging the EliteBook into the ASD with the Apple TB cable, most of the time, has no picture. It always has sound, but most of the time no picture, and I've tried multiple settings in the EB. It's worked two times, where the picture came through, and it worked fine, but disconnecting it then and tried it again later, nothing.

It's very strange. It should work fine with no issues. And twice, it did. But most of the time, no picture.

I have the ASUS ProArt X670E-CREATOR Wifi (also with TB 4 Support) and have successfully connected my Apple Studio Display to it. Sound also worked, but I couldn't control the brightness, it was either way too bright that it hurt my eyes or it was way too dark.

For this reason I disconnected the Apple Studio Display from my ASUS PC and connected my old Dell 5k.

Did you install the bootcamp drivers and use the control panel? I have instructions on this

@kreasu_ Great to hear the Apple Studio Display works for you through the Thunderbolt port! Do I understand correctly that all its features work as expected on the ProArt B550 through the Thunderbolt Cable?

* Speakers
* Webcam
* Brightness Adjustment (with Bootcamp Drivers?)
* 5k resolution

Regarding the tape thing, unfortunately I don't have a link, I just cut the center of a small strip of isolation tape and put it on the USB-C Port metal cover of the Moshi Cable to prevent any contact with the ASD to avoid any voltage interferences and glitches on the display — see the example image with the black strip below.

Many thanks

Yes the speakers Webcam and brightness work via bootcamp on my b550, but they should also work on the x570 Asus board, just make sure your bios is up to date as the bios contains some thunderbolt firmware

So, the display itself works fine, but neither the camera or speakers are detected. I'll have a play about with settings, but I'm suspecting this is due to the corporate build of the laptop which will be locked-down.

Hello guys,

I hope you can help me.

In addition to my Mac Mini, I would also like to use my work laptop on an ASD. The work laptop is unfortunately a bit outdated... It's about a:
  • HP ProBook 650 G2
  • with Intel Core i5-6200U
  • with Intel HD Graphics
  • with only 1 DisplayPort 1.2 port (no HDMI port present)
  • Max. resolutions up to 2560 x 1600, 30-bit color depth at 60 Hz)
Now my question: Is it possible to use the old laptop (with DP 1.2 and low resolution) with a DP->USB C cable with the ASD? (I'd like to avoid having a second screen on the desk.)
