U.K. we have consumer laws
I had a screen replaced on a 2 year old rMBP free of charge
they said dust off the keyboard burnt into the screen, there was a huge thread at the time with the issue

I’ve got a 3rd gen too, though I rarely use it. It’s in a spare room we rarely go in any more. The remote for the 3rd gen still works though. Think it’s the touchpad on the 4th gen Siri remote that makes the thing less rugged.

I definitely think the 4th gen Siri remotes were broken because of abuse we did. Like the one we keep on the kitchen table probably got food on it. The one we keep by the couch on the living room, someone probably sat on it, more than once. But no more than we abuse every other remote that I’ve owned for my entire life.

And I didn’t realize there were people complaining the 4th gen remotes either. Till I thought about maybe replacing it with a 3rd party remote instead of paying the $60 for a new one. And I do searches and in user reviews there are plenty of people complaining about the same thing.

Ok given your use case I don’t think that’ll be counted under “normal” usage. I mean the Apple remote is not like traditional remotes, is it?! It is way more technologically advanced than a traditional plastic case with rubber buttons. So you can’t really expect exactly the same use case. It’s like expecting a Ferrari to be able to navigate the same terrain as a Range Rover.

I agree. It’s a design flaw. And should be covered.

What most people don’t realise is that most companies don’t create products with so many flaws consistently. So they don’t need to offer a resolution either.

The last company that was the dominant force in consumer computing devices was Microsoft. They became successful with unreliable products. Then after they became successful, eventually they starting developing reliable products. I think Windows XP was the first product Microsoft developed that I considered acceptably reliable.

After Microsoft, we got Apple as the most dominant company in consumer computing devices, and they are doing the exact opposite. They rose to prominence with quality, reliable products. And after they became successful, now there products are going in the other direction.

The thing is, these quality problems don't show up in the quarterly reports, that most American corporate executives are pre-occupied with. Because most consumers don’t even realize what’s going on. But over time Apple is eroding their brand, creating an opening for some other company to move in and take over there spot. Part of the reason there was so much space for Apple to excel like they haven’t fed up with Microsoft.

I think I agree with what you’re saying. And that’s part of why I decided to go with a third party remote that doesn’t have a microphone (couldn’t find one that did) rather than to spend $60 on another Siri remote. The remote in the living room just gets too much abuse for a Siri remote to live nicely in there. And I’ve ended up liking not having a touchpad better. It,s just easier to control fast forward and rewinding video with direction buttons than a touch pad. Which is odd, because the touchpad is probably what makes the Siri remote less rugged to being with.
