well damn, i just learned something.

Been with apple over 10 years and never dealt with the repair centre outside the warranty period as i have always opened up the mac after that and fixed them myself.

Just googled and saw the repair costs for ipods

http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipod/service/prices/

so yeah, based on just these.....what a total rip off. Basically they are saying get a new product, so applecare is a bargain.

I'll put on my flame jacket now....

So after getting a small amount of rain on my computer the charging and backlighting wouldnt work, so I took it into the Apple store. It ended up that it was a week past my waranty, so they took down the serial number and said, "We have to ship it out to CA so itll be $1250 to fix." They didnt even take the time to check out what was actually wrong with it, I just told them the charging didnt work and it was really dim. Couldve just been that I was stupid and had the brightness down and a bad outlet... But it wasnt that.
Your original post on MacRumors (back in Sept) sheds a little more light on this.

With water damage, no, Apple does not go through and just replace a part and then hope that no other parts were damaged by the water. They'll either replace your entire logic board, or your entire entire machine.

So I got a very small amount of water on my mac. I let it dry for a few months now. It will still turn on, but the display is very dim and the brightness doesnt brighten it back up. Also the battery wont charge and the light on the charger doesnt light up. What needs to be done? I took it to the apple store and said water and without even looking at it they told me it would be 1250$ to fix. I cant believe its that much, is there any other options? It was 1800 new so Im not spending 1250 to fix it. Pleeeeeease help.
