The highway fatality rate has actually INCREASED because of cell phones.

The people against this idea have literally never seen Americans drive.

You see all sorts of stories of people crashing and killing multiple other people because of texting and driving.

Have you ever thought that that the population has increased too?

How have we never seen Americans drive when we are freaking Americans replying to you?

So we start enforcing the laws on the people driving. You've gone into the realm of "Let's punish everyone!" which is absolutely rubbish and asinine.

Apple is not required to implement what they patent. Maybe they wanted to patent it so no one else could steal their idea in the future incase they ever decided to use it. There is no merit for this suit. The plaintiff is an idiot. (Coming from a law student).
Come back after you've taken IP law... or retake it.

The sad thing is this is exactly how some attorneys think. I rarely get irritated by news stories but this driver nanny crap makes my blood boil. We should be focused on automating the driving experience all together. People are bound to be distracted by any number of things and that's what allows for accidents to happen.

I'm not completely against that but I hope they give rebates or make them affordable to all current households with vehicles before they ban self driving.

Or we will just see more people breaking the law.

F'em.

Let's punish everyone.

Drunk driving causes 3x more fatalities a year than texting and driving. Clearly thats the bigger issue.

(This does not account for your logical fallacy that you failed to consider).

Has drunk driving death rate increased or decreased?

Has drunk driving death rate increased or decreased?

They are down from 2002, but up from 2011.

2002 = 11,000 fatalities
2011 = 9,500
2015 = 10,300

Respond if you want but now I'm just annoyed. Have fun being a dictator.

I'm currently taking copyright, whats your point?

Okay. Now I'm officially stopping because you no longer have logic. Now it's down to the real reason you are arguing your point. Your feelings need to be forced onto other people emphatically. Sad, really.

Because killing & maiming thousands of people a year is SO worth being able to check email while riding a car or train.

Moron.... Make it against the law in every state, HUGE fine and potential jail time, just like a DWI, just like not wearing your seat belt....

Wow, americans need to be babied like this? Just put the damn phone down and use it when you're at your destination. Not hard.

Unfortunately, yes some Americans needs to be babied like this. They have no regard for anyone else and just do what they do.

I've worked in the mobile device design and manufacturing industry for 15 years. I've seen all this and more over the more than 20 years I've had easy access to cell phones. The efforts are being focused in the wrong areas. Rather than making it harder to use a device it should be easier to reduce the time it takes to complete an operation. If people insist on doing something with a device they will do it one way or another. Imaging and acceleration sensors won't be sufficient because the driver can easily occlude the imaging sensors and acceleration can be caused by any number of things. Also there are major privacy concerns to something constantly imaging. It would require opt in and you're just as likely to have a counter suit filed to make it so the feature can be disabled.

You might be able to do it with a combination of NFC tech and accelerometers. BUT this would require the efforts of car manufacturers to put NFC in their cars at various locations around the driver and it would require apple to have a suitable antenna for NFC in their phones.

The hardware just isn't sufficient for such a change as is and we cannot reliably disable the device through automation alone for such a specific circumstance without creating situations where a person is in harms way or seriously impacted by a device being disabled by mistake.

Mr. Ceja's efforts should be directed towards suing the Federal government for not making this a (cringe) mandated feature for all vehicles and device manufacturers. But honestly with the conservative anti-government sentiments we have today there's little to no hope of even more "regulations" being put in place on industry or people. Unless you can convince politicians that this will somehow prevent acts of terrorism.

It will be interesting to hear the arguments from this case but yes. I agree with most that Mr. Ceja is absolutely unfounded in his frustration with Apple.

While this will go nowhere, and may be extreme. Something needs to be done about phone usage when driving. I stopped commuting by bike because of too many close calls with texting/facebooking drivers.
I agree. People and myself included already have a hard time walking and texting...throw a car into the mix...and i don't understand why people do it...

The only thing that would do is make it easier for a distracted driver to do MORE things on a phone.

So, instead of just texting, they'll also text and snap and instagram and email and play a game and ...

Making things more efficient doesn't mean people use it less.

I don't think people understand the scale of the problem here.

We are talking thousands of deaths and injuries every year due to this specific problem.

For comparison, America spent $4 trillion invading Iraq because 3,000 people died on September 11.

How about we force Starbucks, fast food places etc... to lock down their food while it is in a moving car. Eating and drinking cause distractions and accidents as well.

This guy is an idiot.

So are they going to sue other phone companies for not doing the same thing? Or car companies for not disabling vehicles when the driver is intoxicated, or fatigued? Furthermore, why not sue said car companies for not disabling their vehicle anytime a cell device is used within the vehicle?

See how stupid this is, and how worse it quickly gets?

The guy is dumb. If the driver wants to text and drive, he/she is aware of the danger. It's common sense. Apple doesn't need to do anything here.

Forget Starbucks and fast food places. People eat and drink homemade stuff while driving as well. So let's go after anyone and everyone involved in producing and distributing anything food or drink related.

Sorry, can't sue on someone else's behalf (I assume since this anus is so incensed about distracted driving he couldn't possibly be doing it himself).

But don't blame this anus. This is just another d-bag lawyer trying to suckle at the legal system's teat.
