Gosh, why not ban takeout food, or car radios? Lockout all non-essential controls that could lead to distracted driving? HOW MANY ACCIDENTS HAPPEN EVERY YEAR FROM PEOPLE FIDDLING WITH THE HEAT OR AC controls when they should be paying attention to the roads...

While were at it, please sue automakers because cars still operate when seat belts clicked are not clicked in.
That's dangerous also....

It would be awful! And what would be limited to the lockout. Maps, Music, CarPlay?

I can't believe lawyers are wasting their time on this. This is what gives lawyers a bad name. Luckily once I'm done with Law School I won't mess with this nonsense!

People will mess with anything as long as it pays good.

Everybody talking about personal responsibility...I have plenty of it. Phone doesn't get touched when I'm driving. It's practically every other driver on the road that doesn't have the personal responsibility. Protect me from those ******s!

How does garbage like this even get to court.
The lawsuit was filed. Anyone can file a lawsuit for the court fees. That's actually a good thing in general but can be abused. Just because a lawsuit is filed doesn't mean it'll make it past the next step. A judge can easily dismiss it before it even gets to court for any number of reasons.

As much as I would love to see money-greedy Apple get sued to heck and back, i have to say, it's not their job or anyone elses job to "police" people. If texting and driving is dangerous, then we shouldn't allow touchscreens/radios/bluetooth/built in phones/ etc... as well. All that crap is distracting as hell. My hybrid has a colorful display in the center of they speedometer that has so much information be displayed while driving. Its extremely distracting.

The problem is this is getting worse, there is a new Citroen car out with a camera on the rear of the drivers mirror, press a button and it uploads a photo to Instagram. If car manufacturers can get away with that why should apple even care about what their phones can do in cars.

It's all down to people's habits, which need changing not the devices

While I think there should be more done to prevent texting while driving, or distracted driving in general, I don't think this lawsuit has much merit.

But I would like to see some kind of driving mode implemented on all phones to lock out the majority of functionality while driving. We could really use it over here in california

- The virtuous law student just before the everyday sounds of life morph into the "ka-ching" of a cash register.

(Just kidding around. There are some areas of the legal profession to be respected.)

As for the lock-out "solution" this moron proposes, wouldn't that also conceivably affect those traveling on public transportation? Maybe not rail/subway, but I would think at least buses, taxi, uber, etc.

I could go either way on this, but I see the person's logic, particularly in view of Apple's patent. If you aren't going to implement technology protected by a patent filed 9 years ago, that's bad faith of the patent process (at a minimum). Most of the ignorant posters on here seem to just see "lawsuit" and immediately start frothing at the mouth at the opportunity to call the person an idiot.

**** this bitch! I do not need some alt-left know-it-all telling me how to live and what to do, **** her sideways. Also, those idiots do not realize how impossible it is to do such a thing. How will iOS know if it is a driver or a passenger?

How about we focus on educating personal responsibility first, something that is lacking in the millennials.

Self-driving cars are the solution.
Yes, on one end of the spectrum. We're stuck in the middle now where our cars do do a lot of driving for us already. All we have to do is steer, gas, and brake. Add the shifting back into the mix, like most of the rest of world, and it would make phone use more difficult. Let the cars drive completely, or let people drive completely. The middle sucks (said by a guy that couldn't find a decent and affordable manual transmission where I live, but wants one oh so badly).

Unfortunately those actions can take out responsible and innocent adults in their wake.

Though yes, I agree this lawsuit is monumentally stupid and the plaintiff should be mocked.

And if they do, we hold them accountable. We can't just screw up every product possible to try and account for anything bad that could feasibly maybe occur. Just imagine what a horrible, convoluted idea this would be. If you are the passenger in a car, too bad! No phone usage for you. After all, you might be the driver. Overbearing nanny says rather safe than sorry! Also, we really need some kind of class action to force people to eat their veggies.

Apple is not required to implement what they patent. Maybe they wanted to patent it so no one else could steal their idea in the future incase they ever decided to use it. There is no merit for this suit. The plaintiff is an idiot. (Coming from a law student).
