Isn’t the point of the various focus modes? I don’t use any of that so I’m not sure.

How does one recover from such activity in the valley? Surely must be blacklisted and now will only be able to work a Starbucks, REI, or a friend's start up? Was a terrible decision.

Well, this guy will find future employment in the tech industry difficult to say the least.

The only thing, I suppose, is that he wasn't paid for his leaks. Not sure if that makes him a moron or not though.

You can believe that if you want to, but you are incorrect. We can be in breach of contract all we want to and never be arrested. We might get sued, but never put in jail.

Sorry, but this is a dangerous thing to believe.

Yes, this case is civil, not criminal. But this might not be all of it.

He's releasing trade secrets, which, depending on the specifics, could also result in criminal charges. Because it is Apple, he could easily face federal criminal charges if foreign companies are involved.

"Apple says these public revelations impeded its ability to "surprise and delight" with its latest products."

Innovate the ability to do multiple user profiles on iPhone and you'll "surprise and delight" many users, fans, customers, supporters, etc...
Nowadays, the I in iPhone literally stands for individual.

Good. It's hard enough to like Apple and want them to succeed when the employees are sabotaging the company from the inside.

Inconsequential? Hi

He abused his position as a trusted member of Apple's team. He was hired with the agreement to protect trade secrets. To diminish that is immoral.
I don’t see how stating the fact of the matter that the leak was inconsequential (if it indeed was) would diminish the breach of confidentiality.

I know Signal can't be restored, but surely the makers of iCloud and the provider of a company iPhone could possibly do an iCloud restore to get any other data?

My question is how did they get those Signal messages, unless because it was a work phone they were actively spying on his phone, or unless someone compromised the journalist's phone, looks like he set the Signal app to disappearing messages, so where did that screenshot emanate from?

Haha explains why he keeps getting the new iPad launch timeline wrong.
He seems to have gained a lot of traction just making statements with the specificity of "M3 will be faster than M2" or "iOS 18 will have new features." And then guessing at every possible release window until getting one right. That kind of info seems to lead to a high estimation of accuracy. Tends to make me just to skip any content that mentions his name now.

Does anyone else see the irony that we are all here reading and contributing to a site called "MacRumors?" It seems to be a foregone conclusion that those of use who are here are more than happy to read and comment about Apple rumors which come from people like this. It's like people who visit a porn site and then complain about the lack of morality of the "actors" and "models."

Come on, guys...if Apple really goes after this guy and scares the crap out of would be Apple leakers in the future, MacRumors will become very boring very quickly. I'm actually hoping he doesn't get too much more than a slap on the wrist.

Exactly, let them leak everything, people here act as if they are Apple brand ambassadors, is Guy Kawaski posting here under a pen name?

b...b....but Signal is secure

It is if you use it correctly, if you keep the messages, they are on your phone, if the recipient keeps them, the same thing, disappearing messages, well the recipient could take a screenshot, but that is the question with this case, was it poor use on the defendant's part or was Apple spying on his phone?

Did he not delete them on his phone?

Yeah, I think you're right that we're all a little guilty of that.

At the same time, MacRumors has evolved to be more of a Mac news and information site. I know I turn to this site first for any Mac news.
Yes, that's true. And when I think about it, I'm here for a little of both. But when I first began frequenting MacRumors.com, if I remember correctly, it was after I did a Google search for "Apple rumors." I've been a huge Apple/Mac enthusiast since 1986 (since switching from my IBM PC with MS DOS to a Mac Plus). And even during the years when Steve Jobs was absent, I always used to encourage friends and family members to dump their PCs and buy a Mac. But after Jobs returned and they started releasing products like the iMac, G4 iMac, etc., I really became excited about what they were going to do next. MacRumors was right there with all of the iPhone rumors in the months before the famous Steve Jobs keynote in January 2007. And then I was hooked. I've been coming here at least once or twice a week for the past 17 years (if not longer...I can't even remember when I started). And while I often read stories just about Apple News or even just Apple-related news (like this story, for example), I'm always looking for rumors about upcoming hardware and software. When are the new iPads coming? What features will they have? When will Vision Pro glasses or some other kind of second generation AR/VR/MR device come out? What's going to make iOS 18 so much better than all previous versions of iOS? So, in the end, I'm hoping MacRumors still delivers rumors...especially ones we're not really supposed to see.

b...b....but Signal is secure

One more thing though, if you are going to do anything like this, even though using Signal properly should protect you, if the journalist protects you, but in reality, yes, the only foolproof method would be writing the information on paper and then burning said paper after the journalist reads it at a clandestine meeting point.

Of course if Apple suspected this guy was a leaker, they could do other tricks to root him out, feeding him false information and seeing if it ended up on the WSJ website, but still, that would warrant a firing but not as much hot water as he is in now.

I see the irony. But that's doesn't mean I approve of this twerp embedding himself at Apple with an obscene salary and systematically screwing over his employer and, more importantly, his coworkers "so he could 'kill' products and features with which he took issue." He's clearly an egomaniac and I hope Apple claws back every penny they've paid him.
