Actually, the high-paying jobs Apple has to offer are largely located in the US. It's the low-paying jobs that are outsourced. How much of Samsung's R&D happens in the US?

Yea, sometimes it actually helps to think about topics like this for more than just 5 seconds.

Actually, all the tech companies have R&D centers in india, where they do a lot of the advanced research. Microsoft and AMD have HUGE R&D presence in india. Apple is just starting to build their india R&D center in Hyderabad. Google's biggest office outside mountain view is in India.

And its not just tech, car companies also: http://www.motoroids.com/news/ford-...in-rd-centre-new-mid-size-saloon-in-pipeline/

If and when trump restricts H1-B visas, all these companies will just start hiring more people in India. They already have big offices there, so it will be easy to do. The thing about writing code, is you can do it anywhere, unless trump plans to impose an import fee on every line of code written outside the country, it will be impossible to stop the stem of R&D talent fleeing. Thanks to Trumps misguided policies.

Incredible that Samsung has just announced they may build a factory in the US, but Apple refuses to. Instead they go to India.

As well as hating his customers, Tim Cook seems to hate his country too.

Apple is wisely studying it in the background and will announce plans as part of the tax reform that President Trump has promised wherein there is zero incentive for companies like Google, Apple and countless others to bring foreign earnings into the US only to have to pay the highest corporate rate in the world on money earned overseas and taxed in those countries. It's most likely that there will be a greatly reduced rate with the expectation that some portion of these trillions will be turned into direct investments into job creation. Tactically, it would be poor for Apple to announce this before the politicians have finalized the tax reform.

Offshore programmers are mostly used for inexpensive coding of projects designed in the US. (If an offshore programmer is really good, they're often imported to the US where they can engage in advanced research.)

Samsung Research America has about 15,000 employees.

Yep, run a few of these programs personally with resources offshore in india. It just never works and is ONLY done for cost reduction... You have to manage every line of code and the quality is just so poor... Now ask why apple has been struggling with software quality.

Foxconn was Taiwanese and their plants in China were tried and tested.
not just Apple but many others make some of their product by Foxcon in China (Sony,Microsoft, etc).
but India is unfortunately not on par quality wise.and i will have serious concerns about Apple products made in India.
I'm not happy at all.I haven't seen any good product coming from there (no offence to people from India,I'm just stating the facts).
this is awful news.

Samsung is already manufacturing it's Galaxy S series from a couple of years. I am using S6 Edge and iPhone 7 Plus, nothing inferior in terms of quality.

Your concern is over hyped.

None taken but where is the fact? :D

It's funny that you think your anecdotal and limited support of an argument is fact.

I worked with offshore teams and there are some really good programmers. Trust me there is nothing like inexpensive coding. Weak link in the architecture or code will be a disaster. Every line of code needs attention to detail for longterm reliability and scalability. Not many people who are really good can be imported to US which is reason we have offshore development centers.

India(Generally offshoring happens to India) produces 1.5 Million graduates per year in Science & Technology and that is large pool of talent for the companies. Companies can really choose some brightest brains from that pool and it is impossible to bring all that talent to US due to various limitations.

I have taken India as an example because I don't think there is another country in world which produces more than 1.5 million graduates per year in science and technology and that is one of the reasons most of the companies have their R&D centers in India. Yes they do advanced research and also build many advanced applications.

Quoted for truth. Seems like some people are totally oblivious!

Let them be oblivious. That way they don't understand it and won't be able to regulate it. :)
India can take over the innovation that will be stifled by trump regulations.

India and innovation are words that seldom go together.

Cheap to borrow, sure. Innovative, nah. If they were innovative there wouldn't be dead bodies floating down the Ganges.

Do you know India and Vietnam so called third world countries have the top ranked dynamic cities. Innovation and Technology are the key parameters in this ranking. They are competing with Silicon valley.

People have no idea on how fast the world is progressing. Please update!!!

You're ignorance proves my point. :) Let people like you keep thinking that and then one day in 20 years when you look at all the innovation coming out of india and the lack there of from America people will like you will regret being ignorant.

By your point...Have you heard of the violence in Chicago? There are dead bodies on the streets. You can get shot at while just driving down the highway..

I don't buy a thing from India and I not about to start. Tim Cook hates his country of USA

There is not much you can do if the Kiwi land gets the iphone shipments from India. Regarding your comments about my country India, Well the feeling is mutual from my side too, ain't buy anything from the land of sheep shaggers but it is easy to ignore as you don't export anything worth buying anyway.

Ironic..

IF it was a made in America, or the UK program it would be racist or anti something or other with marches and petitions..!
I don't think I agree. There's an opportunity for some manufacturing to come back. I've often wondered why during 9-11 when a feeling of patriotism swept the nation, the buy America website was anemic. The truth is; if you look back at early Walmart days, it was buy American. It later turned out in the background they were pressuring all the manufacturers to outsource in order to sell at lower prices and make a larger profit. Anyway wartime seems to get assembly lines rolling again, so there's always that.

Yes their is and I'll buy from another country. At least Kiwi's support equal rights for woman. I take it you don't just like a lot of like you.

When I want to invent the next android or iPhone I look to the west. When I want cheap labor and tech support I look to India.

In fact name one piece of Indian IP that has global reach and significance. India's largest companies are petroleum giants, and then there is Tata which has no indigenous consumer products that are globally competitive.

Lot of people in this thread have absolute mis-conception that companies like Microsoft, Google or even smaller firms open offices in India only for cost advantage! WRONG. Cost advantage is only like one side of the coin. The other reason is there is significant untapped talent who are NOT willing to move to a different country (like US). These offices in India tap on to that talent.

Its unfortunate (for India) that Hollywood movies only try to show India in poor light only highlighting the slums and not the other (brighter) side; which seems to be the source of most comments in this thread; people are simply ignorant but they talk like they are smarter than Tim Cook. Have a look at cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad and you will be stunned at the number of Software firms (all ranging from call centers to manufacturing to research) they have.

Remember folks, half knowledge is dangerous than no knowledge. And dissing Tim Cook doesn't make you smart. You will still be a nobody and he will still be the CEO of world's richest (software) company.
