I wouldn't be that surprised if the M1 hangs around as the base configuration with the M2 available on the mid and higher end models.

I'm not expecting it to happen by the end of 2022, but I'd love to see a regular M2 version of the 14" MBP appear to replace the 13" MBP, even if the price ends up being higher and roughly half-way between the M2 MBA and M2 pro MBP.

What draws me towards the 14"MBP is the design, ports and mini-LED display, but the M2 chip would be enough for what I want to do with it.

There's always a more powerful machine coming down the line. Hoping I get more out of my M1 Max than the measly 7 years from "best laptop in the world" to museum piece that my 2014 MBP managed.

No interest at all. Wake me up at 3 nm. My M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 is way more computer than I need. The only reason for an upgrade to 3 nm is even more ridiculous battery life. And even then I'm not sure I'd upgrade.
If you've already got a M1 Pro MBP you're not the target customer for this. As several people have pointed out already, M2 Pro/Mac MacBook Pros are not expected to be a must-have upgrade over M1 Pro/Max. This is just keeping the line fresh & attractive to people with older Macs.

Any customers who upgrade their pro Macs every year are a nice bonus for Apple, but I'm sure the expectation is that Pro users will upgrade every 3 years or so - and when that time comes around, they'll want a fairly up-to-date product to buy.

That said, it's still anybody's guess whether we'll see 5nm M2 Pro/Max this year or 3nm M? Pro/Max next year. It's not implausible for new MBPs to launch this year, but suppliers ramping down production could just mean that the initial backlog of orders is clearing - you'd expect sales to slow down once a product is a year old.

At the very least, I suspect existing M1 Pro/Max ultra would want to pass over a 5nm Pro/Max and wait for 3nm - it's not just battery life - lower power == cooler running, which is important in laptops, they'll likely be a further speed increase, plus physically smaller components could mean significant increases in CPU and GPU core counts.

Interesting question - my guess is not.
  • the M2 Air was a whole new design with a better screen - which goes some way to justifying a higher price over the M1 Air. These 14/16 MBPs are probably going to be the same boxes & screens with an upgraded processor.
  • some of the M2 vs. M1 improvements - the extra hardware codec, and LPDDR5 RAM support - are already present in the M1 Pro/max. Unless they add several more CPU and GPU cores M2 Pro/Max vs. M1 Pro/Max might not be such a big upgrade. Since the M1 Pro/Max already have upgraded RAM controllers, it's not clear whether there will be new, higher RAM options for M2 Pro/Max either.
  • the M2 Air launched just before the annual Back To School season in the US and other countries and it was touch-and-go whether it was going to be available in quantity by then, so dropping the M1 Air just then - and introducing a M2 at a higher price - would have been risky. The MBP market isn't quite so seasonal.
it probably also depends on whether they have large existing stocks of M1 MBPs - they probably don't want to keep on making them.

Apple's suppliers are reportedly preparing to produce and ship Apple's next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, which are expected to feature M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.

According to DigiTimes, suppliers within Apple's Mac supply chain are preparing for shipments of upcoming MacBook Pros by slowing down production on existing Macs. DigiTimes notes that Apple's suppliers are similarly ramping down production on the first-generation AirPods Pro following the second-generation's announcement last week.

Apple is expected to update its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the yet-to-be-announced M2 Pro and M2 Max chips sometime in the near future. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is planning an event next month that will be Mac and iPad-focused. Gurman has said that the development of the updated machines is well underway and could see a launch as soon as this fall.

The new 14-inch and 16-inch models are expected to retain the same design as the models announced in October 2021 but with the added performance and power efficiency of the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The chips are expected to be based on the 5nm process and will likely have increased GPU core counts and RAM compared to their M1 equivalents.

Other than updated MacBook Pros, Apple could also be planning to announce an updated Mac mini with ‌the M2‌ chip, new iPad Pro models, and potentially the Apple silicon Mac Pro at an event next month.

My wallet is ready for midnight blue M2 MacBook Pro 😍
I'm pretty sure the only colors available are going to be silver and space gray. If they introduce a new color it's going to be black. Apple's marketing (branding) strategy for the real "pro" products is different from the "consumer" products.

With my much slower 2020 Intel Macbook Air, this is looking like the upgrade I’ve been waiting for. Excited to get a 14” Macbook Pro with the M2 soon or at least get the M1 with a serious discount if there aren’t many new useful features like upgraded ports etc.

Woo hoo! So exciting. However, disappointed that it will be the same design. I have the M2 Air and 16 M1 Pro (own the Air, testing the 16") and I have to say once you experience the slimness and sleekness of the Air it's hard to compete. The huge screen on the 16" is awesome though, but not a huge difference. In fact there was a well-organized experiment on youtube I believe, where people would use an apple device with promotion (120Hz) and without it and afterwards were questioned to see if they noticed a difference and the majority did NOT. I can attest that that's true. I have both laptops here now and I can definitely assert the difference in screens is extremely minor. If you didn't k now about "promotion" then you wouldn't know to look for it. Anyways, I will definitely be a buyer of the 16" but it needs to come WAY down in thickness and weight. They did it before with the intel 16" and there's NO reason they can't do it again. Come on apple it's too thick and clunky!

Both MBP & MBA had silver and space gray colors for years, not exactly the difference you are implying.

Yep, the 2014/2015 MBPs were/are great. My 2014 is still running incredibly well, plenty fast enough for the Photoshop work I do, but if these M2s are released then it'll be the perfect time to pick up a used M1 at a big discount to do some video work.

Whhhhhhyyyyyyyy would Apple release a new model of MacBook Pro where the only update is its power? The M1 Max and M1 Ultra have more power than most people really need and if they want more, they can go for a desktop like the Mac Studio or Mac Pro.

Until they can start using a 4 or 3nm chip, there’s no valid reason for refreshing the MacBook Pro other than greed. And given we always hear on MacRumors how they’re taking weeks to source components and ship custom MacBooks, it’s silly that they’re adding more demand to the strained supply chain. Not to mention, the practise is contradictory to Apple‘s “earth loving“ tenet.

I just hope a new model creates a trickle down price reduction for the M2 MacBook Pro so I can get a bit more power and the right amount of storage (1tb).
Umm. How is it better that Apple just keeps selling the same computer when there are faster chips available. It’s called an update. And Apple should be doing it as often as they can, now they aren’t tied to Intel.

I’ve got an M1Pro and would gladly see another 20% speed boost. Then again next year too please!

I bought a 2015 MacBook Pro for very cheap last year for my kid. It was in as-new condition, because it had a very recent battery replacement, and along with that came a new keyboard and top case. Also, the screen is perfect. It only came with 128 GB storage, but I did swap in a cheap Apple/Samsung OEM 256 GB SSD. That along with our iCloud account means the storage is more than enough. BTW, when I opened it up for the SSD install, I discovered it was absolutely pristine inside, with no dust anywhere. I guess Apple does a cleaning of the insides when they do that battery swap.

It feels like a modern machine, and for the time being, it effectively is, since it is running Monterey 12.6. She will be able to continue to use it for several more years, with two of those years including a full set of security updates.

My other kid is next on the list for a computer, but I don't see myself getting an Apple Silicon computer for that one either, unless I can find one for uber cheap*. Perhaps I can set up my 2014 Mac mini with 23" Apple Cinema Display (both of which I also got very cheap in the past year), or else hand down my beloved 2017 12" MacBook, as both of these machines are also running 12.6 Monterey. Actually, even my 2010 27" iMac would work, but that is starting to get more limiting. Its performance is actually OK for their needs since I installed an SSD in it, but it's limited to High Sierra so that is becoming an issue with some software, and it is no longer getting security updates.

*M1 Macs may end up being relatively affordable when I actually start looking. Next year the M1 Macs will be 3 years old. How time flies.

doesnt every laptop manufacturer do this? I mean they wont do elaborate presentation like its new gift from God like Apple does, but they make the same laptop available with newest CPU

You can run newer Mac OS on that with Open Core Legacy Patcher.

And previously wonderful line of AIO computers continues to languish with its single offering of the 24” iMac Air.

If I could get a Studio and a 5k true color Monitor for $2200-$2400 I wouldn’t care that it wasn’t an AIO. But for my photography Id like accurate colors and the ability to batch processes for a card full of pictures.

This would explain the "sale" going on at BestBuy and Costco (perhaps amazon, too?) of the MBP 14" for 1,599.

That's still a great price and remains a good buy, even with the new model getting close...

Hopefully I didn't make the wrong decision. I just picked up a base 14" at BestBuy for $1599. I figured $400 savings is worth more than what I will gain with the updated models.
I just picked up the step-up 14" MBP at Best Buy this past weekend for $2099 (also $400 off). Since I'm eligible for a 10% military discount, my net savings is really only $150...so if it's clear that Apple will be releasing updated models in October, I might return this MBP and upgrade. We'll see.

Yes I'm aware but the times I've upgraded to a later unsupported OS on my Macs, in some cases I've felt it was more like Hackintosh than Mackintosh. Also, I'm not sure how well the GPU is supported for this particular model by the patcher, but to be honest I haven't tried yet since High Sierra is still serviceable... for now. (Dosdude's patcher doesn't work for this one but I haven't tried OCLP.)
