If you've already got a M1 Pro MBP you're not the target customer for this. As several people have pointed out already, M2 Pro/Mac MacBook Pros are not expected to be a must-have upgrade over M1 Pro/Max. This is just keeping the line fresh & attractive to people with older Macs.No interest at all. Wake me up at 3 nm. My M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 is way more computer than I need. The only reason for an upgrade to 3 nm is even more ridiculous battery life. And even then I'm not sure I'd upgrade.
Hopefully I didn't make the wrong decision. I just picked up a base 14" at BestBuy for $1599. I figured $400 savings is worth more than what I will gain with the updated models.Weak and meh. Go buy discounted 14" and 16" guys.
Interesting question - my guess is not.I wouldn't be that surprised if the M1 hangs around as the base configuration with the M2 available on the mid and higher end models.

Digitimes... It'll be March, isn't it?
Apple's suppliers are reportedly preparing to produce and ship Apple's next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, which are expected to feature M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.

According to DigiTimes, suppliers within Apple's Mac supply chain are preparing for shipments of upcoming MacBook Pros by slowing down production on existing Macs. DigiTimes notes that Apple's suppliers are similarly ramping down production on the first-generation AirPods Pro following the second-generation's announcement last week.
Apple is expected to update its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the yet-to-be-announced M2 Pro and M2 Max chips sometime in the near future. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is planning an event next month that will be Mac and iPad-focused. Gurman has said that the development of the updated machines is well underway and could see a launch as soon as this fall.
The new 14-inch and 16-inch models are expected to retain the same design as the models announced in October 2021 but with the added performance and power efficiency of the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The chips are expected to be based on the 5nm process and will likely have increased GPU core counts and RAM compared to their M1 equivalents.
Other than updated MacBook Pros, Apple could also be planning to announce an updated Mac mini with the M2 chip, new iPad Pro models, and potentially the Apple silicon Mac Pro at an event next month.

I'm pretty sure the only colors available are going to be silver and space gray. If they introduce a new color it's going to be black. Apple's marketing (branding) strategy for the real "pro" products is different from the "consumer" products. My wallet is ready for midnight blue M2 MacBook Pro 😍
Oooh yes hahaMy wallet is ready for midnight blue M2 MacBook Pro 😍

Yep, the 2014/2015 MBPs were/are great. My 2014 is still running incredibly well, plenty fast enough for the Photoshop work I do, but if these M2s are released then it'll be the perfect time to pick up a used M1 at a big discount to do some video work. There's always a more powerful machine coming down the line. Hoping I get more out of my M1 Max than the measly 7 years from "best laptop in the world" to museum piece that my 2014 MBP managed.
Umm. How is it better that Apple just keeps selling the same computer when there are faster chips available. It’s called an update. And Apple should be doing it as often as they can, now they aren’t tied to Intel.Whhhhhhyyyyyyyy would Apple release a new model of MacBook Pro where the only update is its power? The M1 Max and M1 Ultra have more power than most people really need and if they want more, they can go for a desktop like the Mac Studio or Mac Pro.
Until they can start using a 4 or 3nm chip, there’s no valid reason for refreshing the MacBook Pro other than greed. And given we always hear on MacRumors how they’re taking weeks to source components and ship custom MacBooks, it’s silly that they’re adding more demand to the strained supply chain. Not to mention, the practise is contradictory to Apple‘s “earth loving“ tenet.
I just hope a new model creates a trickle down price reduction for the M2 MacBook Pro so I can get a bit more power and the right amount of storage (1tb).
I bought a 2015 MacBook Pro for very cheap last year for my kid. It was in as-new condition, because it had a very recent battery replacement, and along with that came a new keyboard and top case. Also, the screen is perfect. It only came with 128 GB storage, but I did swap in a cheap Apple/Samsung OEM 256 GB SSD. That along with our iCloud account means the storage is more than enough. BTW, when I opened it up for the SSD install, I discovered it was absolutely pristine inside, with no dust anywhere. I guess Apple does a cleaning of the insides when they do that battery swap.Yep, the 2014/2015 MBPs were/are great. That's so not the attitude. You need to upgrade every year if you want to fit in in these parts. If I were in the market, I'd buy the old model at that price even if the new one were already out.
You can run newer Mac OS on that with Open Core Legacy Patcher.even my 2010 27" iMac would work, but that is starting to get more limiting. Its performance is actually OK for their needs since I installed an SSD in it, but it's limited to High Sierra
And previously wonderful line of AIO computers continues to languish with its single offering of the 24” iMac Air.
I just picked up the step-up 14" MBP at Best Buy this past weekend for $2099 (also $400 off). Since I'm eligible for a 10% military discount, my net savings is really only $150...so if it's clear that Apple will be releasing updated models in October, I might return this MBP and upgrade. We'll see.Hopefully I didn't make the wrong decision. I just picked up a base 14" at BestBuy for $1599. I figured $400 savings is worth more than what I will gain with the updated models.
Yes I'm aware but the times I've upgraded to a later unsupported OS on my Macs, in some cases I've felt it was more like Hackintosh than Mackintosh. Also, I'm not sure how well the GPU is supported for this particular model by the patcher, but to be honest I haven't tried yet since High Sierra is still serviceable... for now. (Dosdude's patcher doesn't work for this one but I haven't tried OCLP.)You can run newer Mac OS on that with Open Core Legacy Patcher.
