My post wasn't sarcasm. Lack of proper choice is one aspect I don't like about iOS and its associated devices. They do better on the Mac side/OS X side for this.

Not to mention I don't have any problems recognizing the strengths of competing platforms nor do I feel the need to bash anything not Apple and praise everything Apple. Sorry if that offends you.

I'm not offended. I honestly feel the same way regarding competition.

I think being an iOS user since 2007 switching to Android isn't as easy. The things most users hate about iOS (lack of customization, strict app store policies, limited devices to choose from, etc.) are things I've learned to love about it. I guess I see it from Apple's perspective more than most users.

So what ? They'll just tell you to "hold it farther away". ;) Then it's retina again!

Ha!

Seriously though, I'd just rather not have a 4" screen if it meant compromising the retina display.

It's for new iPod touch.
And the new iPod touch will also have 3G.

I personally would like to see a 4.5" or slightly larger display for the iPod touch line only WITH 3G. Keep the same PPI as the 4S or whatever to make it easier on developers. This would be ideal for me. I love the new Samsung galaxy note or 5" galaxy player but don't want a phone that size or android as a primary device.

Other manufacturers show that it is not that hard to squeeze in a 4 inch display on (nearly) the same size

Even the home button would still fit.

I know that, but the form factor still changes. If Apple releases the next iPhone with a "traditional" home button, they are far behind the curve as the Galaxy Nexus is doing away with the actual physical "home" buttons. Apple needs to make it a gesture based area to rectify their terrible multitasking.

Amazing how Apple's vision of the Post PC world looks. Let's see, I can buy a Mac with a 11" display, or a 13", 15" 17", 21.5, 27" (or if I buy a Mac Pro or a Mac mini any size monitor I want).

The POST-PC era (Apple's version) has 3.5" and 9.7" devices, and fanboys are screaming "You don't need anything else"..... Fragmentation, Fragmentation!!!

The difference is that most PC applications are resolution-independent as they are designed to run in windowed mode.

Mobile Applications, on the other hand, are designed for full-screen use and optimized for a given resolution. That's the point of mobile applications. They don't scale so developers can match the physical size of buttons to the size of human fingers and even non-clickable elements are optimized to take as much space as they can, very useful on small screens.

Nope, just like last time.

Rumors said we were getting a iP5 with a 4" screen this year.

I said then and I will say it now. Not happening.

Apple uses a fatter aspect ratio than other phones and 4" 3:2 would be too fat ergonomically for Apple, a company that pays a lot of attention to these things.

I think the most important thing is not the size of the screen but the edges around it.

You can see the Galaxy and the edges are HUGE, the phone looks horrible and the final size of the device is GIANT.

I rather have the same 3.5 screen size with higher resolution and an edge to edge screen.

4" will be good but only if the screen is edge to edge to keep the iPhone relatively small...

I like the size of the iPhone. Many people in my office have Android phones in the 4"+ range, and they all look odd, like mini-slates, rather than phones. To be honest, I simply want a good phone, and if Apple needs to, they can make it thinner, but don't make it wider. Plus, a wider phone wouldn't be able to sit in my stand for my cup holder I bought for my iPod 3G, nor would it be able to fit in my existing docks.

TEG

For me 3.5" is the ideal size. My phone spends 90% of the time in my pocket.

So what you're saying is that you really only use your phone 10% of the time? Then you are not the target audience here. What about during the winter time when theres the option of a much larger coat pocket? .5" isn't make or break for most people. It's all about the user experience, and ecosystem. And until Google catches up, then Apple will continue to dominate in this space.

One of the reasons why I never bought an iPhone yet is because of the small ass screen it currently has. Even the 3.7" on my N1 is too small for my tastes. A 4" screen would be much appreciated. :)

Your not.

After iOS 5 there is no more need for a computer if you choose not to use one.

While there isn't a requirement for a computer anymore you are still locked into some aspects of the iTunes world as that is the only supported store etc. And many still aren't fond of that detail

I think 768x1024 is much more likely.
Changing to a 4:3 aspect ratio, being more squared maybe more awkward for a handheld device that's suppose to fit in the palm of your hand. The usability aspect in changing to 1024x768 would probably concern Apple even more than developer convenience and backwards compatibility.

Seems too early to start shipping anything for the next iPhone.

The tech guys and iPad haters want a larger screen because they want this to be an all purpose digital computing device. Meanwhile the rest of us plebs already went out and bought an iPad....

No offense but I'd hardly call people who can afford both an iPhone and a $500 iPad "plebs" (aka commoners).

I wouldn't mind a 4" iPhone and am kind of surprised to see so many people hating on that idea...

The only way I could see this happening is if they stopped supporting anything that doesn't have retina (not including iPad), and didn't allow developers to produce content for these legacy devices.

Eventually they will do this anyway. In fact I'm a little shocked that they didn't require all apps to be at least iOS 4 already. It would be a great move cause some of the older apps are really acting buggy on newer devices. Forcing a clean up of the code would help.

Netflix on a 3.5" isn't an enjoyable experiences, whatsoever.

Which is why you get an iPad

Seriously laughing at all the people saying they don't want to "lug" a 4 inch phone around, or are genuinely worried that it won't fit in their pocket.

The iPhone could have a 4 inch screen and not get any bigger, if it had an edge-to-edge screen. Even if they made the phone a tiny amount bigger to fit a 4 inch screen, the only way it wouldn't fit in your pocket, is if your iPhone can only just fit in your pocket now. Look at the Samsung phone, thats how big it'd be. Theres almost no difference.

Yes the developers would cry. But Apple was never really about satisfying the developers - apple always tryed satisfying the consumer.

...And I'm glad they do: At the end of the day, who pays the bills? THE CONSUMER. It annoys the hell out of me when all the developers in these forums bitch and moan about any and all changes that require them to do any extra work. Guess what? The consumer doesn't want stagnation....and in the end, both Apple AND developers rely on CONSUMERS...NOT the other way around. If a developer wants to stay competitive, they'll do a little extra work. If they're to lazy to do it, they'll be left behind. For crying out loud...they are developers...not "Develop once, then sit around your condo and watch Star Trek reruns indefinitely"-ers

Up to 4" is what I can accept, maybe even 4.2" depending on how its designed. ANything above that is too big for me.

What will happen to the resolution? Will pixel density remain the same but over a larger area (so more pixels) or will it just be a retina display stretched out - so lower pixel density/resolution?

Will this lead to fragmentation? I'm scared.

As someone who recently carried the Samsung Infuse 4G as my primary everyday phone for a month, I do not agree with those that say a larger-than-3.5" screen is cumbersome.

The Infuse is a relative giant as far a screens go (4.5") but even with - actually, because of - a Body Glove case it felt perfectly natural and even 'right' in my hands and pocket. And I don't have large hands. If anything that phone may have seemed a bit tall but the width and screen were simply wonderful.

So from my experience, I would welcome a 4"+ screen on the iPhone.

Current iPhone is the perfect size. What size is a Galaxy SII? That is huge and I feel too big for your pocket
