Seriously laughing at all the people saying they don't want to "lug" a 4 inch phone around, or are genuinely worried that it won't fit in their pocket.

The iPhone could have a 4 inch screen and not get any bigger, if it had an edge-to-edge screen. Even if they made the phone a tiny amount bigger to fit a 4 inch screen, the only way it wouldn't fit in your pocket, is if your iPhone can only just fit in your pocket now. Look at the Samsung phone, thats how big it'd be. Theres almost no difference.

Has nothing to do with whether or not it will fit. If Apple keeps the same size device it's whatever.

People just have this horrible attitude that more and bigger is better. I've always been attracted to Apple products because the ideas of minimalism and simplicity that go into the physical design. A bigger phone just violates those ideas.

Really size IMO is only 0.01% of the problem though. It's the amount of fragmentation that is caused by maintaining the "retina" standard, or the loss in quality of removing it.

I won't not buy the next iPhone if it has a 4" screen, but I'm fine with 3.5" and I would not be so thrilled if they went bigger than 4". It's still a pocket device. I can't stand holding those giant Android phones. Not only do they just look gaudy at that point, they're just not comfortable to work with in a hand and pocket. iPhone 4/4S to me is a near-perfect size and feel.

......next iPhone or iPad , let's NOT build them around the screen

If THE feature is the screen dimensions I agree. it's a lame thing to hawk a device on.

If the screen dimensions happen to be one factor in a group that includes sharper resolution, better brightness (especially when using outside), lower battery needs etc, then okay make it that little bit bigger if you feel you must.

Changing to a 4:3 aspect ratio, being more squared maybe more awkward for a handheld device that's suppose to fit in the palm of your hand. The usability aspect in changing to 1024x768 would probably concern Apple even more than developer convenience and backwards compatibility.
I just don't see a modest screen size increase justifying a totally new display mode. And I also can't see extending 640x480 to a larger screen. But as I said, time will tell....

But you are right: there is little room on the sides of the display right now, compared to the top and bottom. If Apple is going to try and stay within the same sized iPhone there is not much that can be done to screen width.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you which is better. However, if Apple decides to go 4", I'm sure they will do something to the OS to ensure any major issues with the new size are addressed by the keyboard, etc.

For everyone whining about getting a larger screen, I think it's worth noting that back when the iPhone originally came out, smaller was, in general, better. I had a Sony/Ericsson T610, which was TINY. My wife had one of the many Razr flip phone configurations. I thought the iPhone was way too big for a phone when it came out.

Maybe the market is different now, but I still prefer the smaller X/Y dimensions that the iPhone offers.

If you're not carrying a 27" Cinema Display in your pocket, then you're behind the curve. I can't stand looking at anything that's less than 24" diagonal. The depth and weight of the massive display just give you something to really hold onto. It feels perfect in your hand.

u dont need a 4' inch its too big for a phone look at the galaxy too big u cant touch the all screen its annoying

This is pretty sad. Guys not happy with the super duper 4s upgrade? Already talking about iPhone 5 display rumors? How funny would it be if Samsung does a iPhone 5 rumor commercial. Didn't everyone learn that a iphone rumor is just useless until Apple makes it official. Just pathetic!

Coders don't make graphics for screen size, only for pixel counts. A 960x640 screen, be it 4" or 3.5" is the same thing.

Well, a 4" screen would have more pixels, because if not, it would not be retina anymore. So it would become a new screensize. Andwhen Im talking of screen size, I think of pixels, not inches.

look at how much of the picture gets cut off without that extra half inch!

Um, I'm pretty sure those are two different scenes. If the size affected it would just make the picture smaller. The thing that would cause one to cut off a scene would be if it had a different aspect ratio that would cause them to either have to stretch the picture in some way to fully fit, cut off part of it to change it's aspect ratio to the new screen, or have black bars in the areas it does not fill, not a different size.

Otherwise do you really think we'd see much of a movie that was originally shown in a theater on your tv rather than just a small section of the movie if the size of the screen was what dictated if you saw the whole picture?

Well sure it does. For example tiping would be much better on a larger display because the touch targets are bigger.

I also don't want a bigger iphone , but you could fit a larger screen in the iphone without making the whole display much larger.

Yes the developers would cry. But Apple was never really about satisfying the developers - apple always tryed satisfying the consumer.

If Apple pisses off the developers and they leave, that will definitely not have satisified customers ;).

Other manufacturers show that it is not that hard to squeeze in a 4 inch display on (nearly) the same size

Image

Even the home button would still fit.

That is actually pretty good proof it could be done without increasing the size much (unlike the original phone they chose to compare with that from the pics looks significantly larger than the iphone).

As long as the next iPhone gets stellar battery life, I don't care how big the screen is. If it gets similar battery life as a droid with a 4-inch screen, no thanks.

I'm glad to see some one thought about this part too. It seems a lot of people in this thread are ignoring this problem they'd have to get around. I fully agree, I'd rather have the 3.5" screen which is totally usable to me over a shorter battery life.

I guess I'm spoiled by being able to have an iphone and an iPad, but having a bigger screen on the phone for me would just take up more space in my pocket and be a bother more than anything.

I would be down for same/similar dimensions and form factor but just less bezel, thus larger screen... Coming from an EVO I'm liking the less wide form factor when holding the phone in portrait view or as a phone.

...And I'm glad they do: At the end of the day, who pays the bills? THE CONSUMER. It annoys the hell out of me when all the developers in these forums bitch and moan about any and all changes that require them to do any extra work. Guess what? The consumer doesn't want stagnation....and in the end, both Apple AND developers rely on CONSUMERS...NOT the other way around. If a developer wants to stay competitive, they'll do a little extra work. If they're to lazy to do it, they'll be left behind. For crying out loud...they are developers...not "Develop once, then sit around your condo and watch Star Trek reruns indefinitely"-ers

As it stands, the co-dependency goes both ways. Apple and its consumers need developers. No developers, no applications. No applications, no app store. No app store means one of Apples main selling points is gone. So yeah...

Which is why you get an iPad

Call us when you get an iPad that fits in your pocket. Meanwhile, a 4" iPhone sounds pretty good.

Well, a 4" screen would have more pixels, because if not, it would not be retina anymore. So it would become a new screensize. Andwhen Im talking of screen size, I think of pixels, not inches.

4" does not have to have more pixels. And again, Retina being a function of distance, you just have to "hold it farther". ;)

This would all be moot if Apple had proper resolution support in Cocoa Touch...

3,5" or 4" screen either one doesn't matter people will buy it regardless.
But I think the 3,5" is just fine for the iPhone after all it should easily slide in your pocket and with a retina display I can read the screen just fine without having to zoom. So whats the point of a bigger screen, other then making your phone bigger and bulkier. it's becoming just another wiener-factor at this point "who has the biggest".
If you want a bigger screen then why don't/haven't you just bought an iPad with 3G...
the 4" would be fine if the screens bezel gets smaller.

Guess what? I have information that Apple will be releasing a product running iOS in March that will have a bigger screen than every Android phone. It'll be great for Netflix and stuff. I have an early prototype, and it's great! I sold my ratty old iPhone 4. Sure, it's too big for any pocket, but that doesn't matter because it's the future of cell phones, and it is the only cell phone I'll ever need. Now, I haven't measured the screen, but if I were to guess, I'd say it's exactly 9.7 inches

;)

Just like I said, Apple will most definitely move to a 4 inch screen and all sheep will sing it's praise. The phone will get slightly bigger, and every single one of you will have absolutely no problem with it. Every single one of you who have called android phones too big, will not care in the least that your beloved iPhone has become bigger. This is 100% guaranteed. And we all know it. So stop talking like you don't want it to get bigger, or that your ok with a 4 inch screen as long as the phone overall doesn't get bigger. Your going to buy one regardless.

I don't doubt that the very ones who complain about a bigger screen will suddenly think it's great as soon as Apple is the one selling it. Ditto for a smaller iPad.

I don't give a rats ass :D

The Votes win

I want a 4"

Me too. But I mean a phone. :D:D:D

If they go to a 4 inch display, I hope they maintain the same pixel density.

That would be nice if possible.

Bigger screen, sure, but a bigger phone might be overkill.

But if and when Apple makes a bigger phone I'm sure you will be the first to sing it's praises.

"The 3.5 inch fits perfectly into my hand" - That's what she said :D

LOL!

And apparently the vast majority of users here are afraid of any and all change. Staying the same doesn't make it better either. ;)

No one said it made it better, but the point is that it doesn't necessarily make it worse either. Some people are content with the 3.5" screen size.

I would like a larger screen, but not at the expense of a larger phone. If they can somehow magically squeeze it in it would be fine. I could go .1" more but love being able to keep it in my front pocket and easily get to it. If I need anything more I use my iPad.
