LightPeak?

Has anyone heard if these first gen tablets will have LightPeak - the compact (and very fast) optical connection? There was some talk early on but none recently.

LightPeak was targetted to make it to market in 2010 - or at least that was the hope in 2009.

It will be shocking if it has anything other than a dock connecter.

The tablet will be the only thing.

Apple knows what everyone is expecting and they are just toying with the press. Apple plans to blow away the crowd this time!

Apple hasn't said anything about a tablet what if they just release the iPhone OS 4 and an iPod update and no tablet. (i.e. no "one more thing")

Then what?

Phone Service on iPad?

What are the chances the tablet will offer phone service via the cell link or will it be data only?

What do you mean "then what?" The world ends in a fiery cataclysm? Rabid monkeys invade our homes and businesses? Or we all just bitch and moan a lot

Apple hasn't denied the tablet, and given all the hoopla they certainly would have denied it by now in order to avoid the stock-crushing response that would surely accompany a Jan.27th announcement devoid of tablets.

I would much rather see the device close to $1000 that includes nominal data access like the kindle (plus maybe some mobileme contact/calendar syncing) than it be $500-$600 subsidized with a data plan.

There will most likely be a $799 model, an $899 model, and a $999 model. The difference will be storage space and/or possible OLED vs LED.

Why on earth would anyone buy an old tech composite Macbook, when a lighter smaller tablet with touch capabilities, subsidized 3G connectivity, better battery life, better display, ebook capable, accelerometer, facial recognition, etc. etc. could be had for the same money?

Keyboard....full fledged OSX

Ill wait and see

Honestly, I had huge hopes for the iphone leading up to the announcement.
I thought it was going to be much cooler than it was. I think this tablet thingie will be the same way. I don't think it is going to be nearly as orgasmic as everyone thinks. It will be a little more advanced than whats out there now, with one maybe two cool new features. But I don't think it's going to blow anyone completely away. It wont have star trek voice recognition, or 3D, or holodeck projection etc. I think everyone needs to calm down and breathe deep. Or you are going to be disappointed on the day this device comes out.
That's just my 2 cents.

iPad

I don't see how making this a $1000 product makes sense. If you are going to spend 1k, why not just buy a composite Macbook?

More likely we will see this in the 600-700 dollar range.

i think $1000 dollars is to high, $600-$700 range makes it a little more reasonable for people, but even if it does launch at $1000 if it were subsidized on a 3G network could make it $500 or so. Just a theory.

Junior & Senior anyone?

Please be serious!

There are leaks all over about how Apple is striking content deals with various newspapers and book publishers. The Wall Street Journal has lately been Apple's mouth piece, Apple leaks info to the WSJ that they want to be made public but indirectly.

Other manufacturers rushed tablet and ebook readers to the recent CES show to try and have a product available before the expected Apple entry.

Now Apple give out a press invite to join them to see their latest creation.

If Apple doesn't release a tablet, then their stock is going to tank. It is a done deal and it will most likely be the only Apple announcement at the Jan. 27th show.

Still not understanding what true function of the iThingy is yet. Seems like a cool idea of a device with no real function. Really really starting to sound more and more like a 7-10" iPod Touch. Cool factor isn't gonna entice me to spend $1000 (or even $700) on something that my iPhone can do in a more portable form factor. I can read Kindle books, play games, read newspapers, etc. with my phone. Just make my phone be able to upload Office documents to it easily and have a file system and run Flash and I'll be happy with a new iPhone in 5 months for ~$700 less.

I'm feeling this is gonna be a flop in 6 months like the MBAir because "WOW, that's cool" can only take a product so far with no defined place in the market and no true void that people desire to be filled. People should be saying" Dang, I wish there was a quasi-handheld device that I can't put in my pocket that I can read old-school newspapers and books on that will also play games and plays music and videos and that's really expensive with the same functions that I already have or should have in my phone." They might as well just come out with the iWidget.... a cool device that serves no overt purpose other than to compete against its own existing product line (iPhone and iPod Touch and MBAir and MB).

I just don't understand its function. Maybe I'm the one that's old-school??? I truly wish Apple all the best with the iWhatever. Heck, I may just be dumb enough to buy one (and then have the price cut by a third after 2 months and feel screwed for the 3rd time by new Apple products... iPhone 1G and uniMacBook). Nope, already been burned twice!

As a non-American I am a little concerned about the content tie-ins. Usually this means a long wait for the rest of the world for the services to arrive, if ever. I am also a little worried that this will be another iPhone type carrier lock in. Another thing I don't like at all!

If this thing cost any more than $800, it is going to fail. It is as simple as that.

Depends on your definition of fail.
If YOU personally don't buy one, that doesn't necessarily equal fail to everyone else.
If as many people who buy iPhones don't by one, still not a fail.
How many people bought AIRs? I don't know one person...did it fail? I wouldn't say so.

The fact is they could charge $1500 and they'll still sell a ton.... Maybe they sell twice as many at half the markup, would net the same profit... FAIL is a loss of money or not a huge market share? Given the sparse selection in the "TABLET" market that exists, I'd predict this would be the #1 touch screen tablet on the first day it goes on sale.

AppleTV to some has FAILed...but I have one, and have setup at least 8 more of them for friends and clients.

If they sell more of these than there are Android Tablets, does that mean Android Tablets fail?

A Kindle is like $300, and it's a pure ereader. If this thing is $800, a color ereader, mobile internet device, portable media player, big ipod with added functionality, it seems like a good deal to me. If you need that sort of thing.

Keyboard....full fledged OSX

Why?

If you need a full fledged keyboard just use one through Bluetooth.

The composite Macbook is no powerhouse for OS X. A tablet running iwork apps, iphone like apps, and cloud computing covers 99% of what a typical composite macbook would be used for.

Touch applications will be far more practical for most mobile users. Plus if you really need to run high end OS X apps on the go, then your best choice would be a Macbook Pro not the composite macbook.

I would bet the white macbook is gone, the air is gone, and all that will be offered is the Macbook pro line and the tablet line.

As a college student, if they can make a device under $1000 with a good electronic textbook experience (not just some scrollable PDF that's slow and cumbersome like ones I've used before) then it would be well worth it.

I could replace many many pounds of textbooks each semester and a laptop for light browsing/email with one device that slips in my backpack.

Hopefully the textbooks would be a bit cheaper than the standard fare as well :D

The most interesting thing will be to see how Steve Jobs pitches this. Remember that Apple often pitches things in a way that's not completely obvious or expected. They didn't advertise the iPod touch as an "iPhone without the phone" like everyone was asking for, they defined a need for a device and presented one that filled that need.

If the want the educational market, it's going to have to be a small fraction of $1000. I'd love it if they could. I wanted to help design one.

Shut up! We want it! j/k :D

"Expensive" is relative to whoever is the potential buyer. The high school student, $1000 is a dream. To a married couple with two incomes, $1000 is the price you pay... I'll take two, please. ;)
