Make a piece of paper the size of the device with a 9.7 inch screen, hold it in your hands and then ask yourself, "would Apple really sell something like this with full Mac OS X on it?"

I've done it and frankly, it just doesn't make sense why they'd do that.

Obscenely subjective example.

Who's to say they want allow bluetooth connectivity enabling the wireless keyboard to work with the "Tablet".

If Bluetooth is on it and Apple doesn't "allow" its use, we'll see paired Bluetooth keyboards within a week.

You just bring in SO MANY problems when downloading from anywhere is brought into the picture.

Like the "problems" that are constantly being had on all other computers that Apple sells?

As far as Apple's concerned, EVERYTHING can pass through the App Store and they'll take a nice 30% chunk off those sales. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me!

And it would never be a serious machine because authors of applications wouldn't be able to take full advantage of the hardware or OS.

Some reasons why this tablet won't have OS X:
Apple makes too much money from the AppStore, OS X would let you install whatever you want from wherever you want.

So... like any of Apple's REAL computers, then.

There are no rumours about new tablet-friendly versions of existing OS X applications (PhotoShop, MS Word etc).

They're not needed... yet. Not for this interface.

OS X applications would need major retooling to work well in multi-touch. New copy/paste functionality is only the start...

You've never used Inkwell, have you?

Mobile Safari is screaming to be used on this device!

I'd rather have full Safari so that I could use Flash while the Internet tells me that it is still important.

Exactly. Will the tablet actually be a REAL computer? I doubt it.

They're not needed... yet. Not for this interface.

I'll wait and see on this one.

You've never used Inkwell, have you?

No, but I know there's a big difference in terms of accuracy between writing with a pen on a graphics tablet and using your finger.

I'd rather have full Safari so that I could use Flash while the Internet tells me that it is still important.

Good point, well made. :)

You've never used Inkwell, have you?

I have. I use a graphics tablet instead of a Mouse for 95% of my work.

1. Inkwell is useless.

2. Inkwell has nothing to do with multi-touch. It requires a stylus.
And while there have been many tablet computers with styluses. They all had one thing in common.

They were commercial flops.

Trying to shoehorn a full desktop application into hand-held or a small format machine produces an unsatisfactory experience. This is why the Origami project failed.

Why have I never seen this thread before?

My prediction is: iPhone OS and iPhone OS apps with additional features and enhancements to take advantage of the larger display and higher specifications.

I don't think it will be "just" a larger iPod touch (for reasons already explained) and I don't think it will use Mac OS X (for reasons already explained).
