Ok, like most men I have difficulty working out what 10" looks like. In order to clear things up I started looking for real examples to help people visualize it.

Apple's possible 10" touch device will most likely (based on iphone ratio) be a 9" screen with a boarder. This then would be slightly larger than a DVD case.

Also if you scale up the ipod touch (10" = 4 ipod touch) then it would weigh 600g (4 x 125g).

So it may well be smaller and lighter than you think.

I know the device will be very popular as my wife has always said she would love a 10".

A better comparison of size is to that of your mouse pad... the average mouse pad is about the size of this device + frame

This thread is great and I personally can't wait until Apple announce and release this thing.

I agree with the other posters who have said that we really can't imagine what it will be like until it's released, after all, who could have guessed what the iphone was going to be like until it came out? Now of course it all seems so obvious. As will the tablet once we see it.

Apple always seems to get people asking "Why didn't anyone think of this before?" and I believe they will again with the tablet.

My one wish is that they allow it to be a multi-touch input device for my Mac Pro, IMO that's the only way we're going to get multi-touch on a desktop computer that actually works and "feels right".

I've done lots and lots of reading around how I might turn my Apple 23" ACD into a multi-touch display for use with my Mac Pro and 30" ACD and I really hope this tablet provides that interface.

/me calms down now and tries to wait patiently until September

If this "tablet" is aiming in the direction of a Kindle and has the following specifications, I'm sold. Even though I own a brand new MacBook Pro.

  • OLED (TFT sucks for reading in low light conditions, you might as well stab your eyes out
  • A light version of Snow Leopard (no iPhone OS)
  • 801.11n Wifi
  • Multitouch surface with handwriting recognition

I could go on, but these lists are too painful to create. Despite, these are the four main reasons which in my opinion warrant something that can be called iTablet or bear the brand of Apple.

Some more important features I'm just thinking off are: MiniDisplay-Port, 1 USB Port (eventually 2), extensive uptime (i.e. good battery), compatability with the Apple Remote (presentations, same goes for the display port), Bluetooth (keyboards, mice, other stuff).

This product has fail written all over it. I suppose a couple of million fans will buy it whilst everyone else scratches their heads and wonders what its point is.

I think the reason most people aren't expecting this to be huge (me included, but you never know what Steve may throw at us) like the iPhone for example is that, while people expected the iPhone to be succesful, it still would have sold a lot even if it was just regular button phone with a click wheel and the iPod interface.

We knew it would be great because it could bring the iPod to mobile phones (and it did with a lot more).

But a tablet, as I said we never know, but it needs to be a lot more than just a bigger iPod touch, because it's probably gonna cost a lot and then people would need something more than media features (that their iPods/iPhones already do) + regular computing (since that would still be a lot easier with a laptop)

But which OS for a tablet?

I really wanna see an Apple tablet. But which OS will it run? I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be iPhone OS, but with multi-tasking so you can run more than one app at a time.

So, has this been covered?? Anybody know:

1. If it is going to be a Kindle killer, will it have e-ink? All the other readers have had it.

2. Will it be a Wacom killer? I.e., can you use it to draw on the screen, and use Photoshop and other drawing and painting programs? In which case, you should be ale to use a special pen stylus.

Thanks!

I'm with several of the earlier posters here: I just don't see when I would use this thing.

At home? Hardly - I've already got a Mac & a TV.

On the road? It's no match for an iPhone for portability, so that's not what it's for. Unless it has a 3G data plan it will only work when I stop somewhere with WiFi. How is it better than a netbook in these situations? If it has a 3G data plan, how is it better than a netbook with one?

Perhaps some of the tablet fans can explain it to me. What exactly can such a device do better than what I already have?

It will be lighter, better to handle and probl cheaper. Most notebooks are heavy and you can't hold them with one hand. and don't forget ''the general public'' wants something, all in one, where they can surf, play some games, skype, perhaps watch the news read a book/paper and even listen to some music. The success of ipod touch (which is in itself remarkable: small screen not even a tv and no major gaming (like Wii, playstation etc)) learned us that the general public wants something like this.

It all depends on reliability, aesthetics, advertisement, connectivity and acceptability. And cheap. It can't complete with their macbook line so it will be something bigger then ipod touch with added benefits like e-reader.

Also, the biggest complain ipod touch and iphone users have is the size of the screen esp with videos, typing etc.

Edge/Corner swiping to turn pages

I predict Apple will implement a swiping gesture and accompanying animation (subdued, of course) to simulate page turning when viewing liner notes and pages of text. This will be an option to traditional scrolling.

i think this tablets got great potential, im picturing myself sitting in a lecture taping on the screen, notes for my lectures. if the whole idea of a mini tablet to compete against the netbooks doesnt work out, theres already a market for ebook readers and i can tell you this now, the apple tablet will kill the kindle. the iphone alone is not far off from being a better ebook reader. also movies, there'll no doubt be good quality picture. not to mention all the great features of the iphone, besides calling etc.
i personally cant wait for the keynote on this lil bad boy, im tossing up whether i should get a laptop or this new tablet thingy...
exciting stuff

My good man!! Have you NOT seen Star Trek?!?!?!?
...
- iPhone / iPod Touch accessory port.... now that would make sense but watch they hold off till v2.0 for that to be included.... its SO like them.
...

I just had a good idea, iPhone/iPod Touch bluetooth integration. You're sitting in a room with other people who have their iphone. They can connect to the tablet using bluetooth and view your photo albums and what not
GENIUS! :D

Also, how about built in webcam?

I hope it looks like the MacBook Pro aluminum screen and runs the full Snow Leopard.

Other reports claim that this device will include 3G capability, and Apple is teaming with Verizon. I think that might be a good idea on Apple's part since Verizon can subsidize the device, and it will allow internet usage anywhere other than wifi spots.

If the device does include a cellular antenna, it will need FCC approval just like the iPhone did, and so Apple will most likely announce the product before the approval, and then release a few months later.

Apple would not announce a new product right before the holiday season if they were not planning to launch it, since it would reduce their holiday sales. Apple would also not release a new product in early 2010, since it is just after the holiday season and sales would be drastically reduced. So if this device is coming, Apple will either release the product this holiday season, or announce it early 2010 for a summer release.

Is, besides the device and the its implementation, also CONTENT.

Apple's devices are becoming more and more "content dependent" and the iPhone is the perfect example of this. Its success depends, in large part, from the App Store and its availabilty wordlwide.

An Apple Tablet, and a possible future AppleTV should, in order to have sustainable sales worldwide (after all outside the US is where Apple generated much of the growth which prevented it from suffering the harsh economic times) should be backed with content.

Music works, and is interesting, but doesn't "need" a 10" screen (not even iPod Touch's 3.5" for that matter).
Only Books, movies and tv shows would make sense as sales drivers for this platform (and the AppleTV and the iPhone/iPod Touch once the "app hype" has passed and competitors also start selling apps on their platforms).

The next important step, in my opinion, for Apple would be to make the same TV and Movies (both sales and rentals, SD and HD) available in all markets, before competitors get there (Microsoft but also Hulu and the like).
That will make it possible for AppleTV and a possible Apple Tablet to have some appeal for other markets besides the US.
I know it isn't entirely down to Apple, but I think a lot of energy should be invested in striking such deals if they want to continue growth abroad.

the reason MS Windows was such a success was that it had the most apps. back in the day Microsoft reached out to developers to create as many apps as possible. Sony did the same thing with the original Playstation to defeat Sega.

I bought my first PC mostly to play games. I still remember the days when you went to a store and most of the software was PC and there was a tiny corner somewhere for Mac software. and back in those days if you wanted to play games on a computer you bought a PC or built one

This tablet will sell, and sell well. The fact that it's Apple and a new device/gadget etc... it will sell, even at $800 a pop. The fact that the first people, like everyone reading this clearly is following it months before it releases and an avid Apple fan.

Just as everyone said the MBA is pointless and will never sell. Well it's on revision 3 now and while your local Apple store clerk says they don't sell, he's just pissed he can't afford one as a 2nd computer to play media. The tablet will have it's uses but to a mass market of people that don't want to carry a laptop and don't want that pc of crap plastic netbook they thought was a good idea but the screen sucks, the keyboard is cramped and they really just wanted a small movie player.

A well designed tablet that I can use with the app store is what I believe this device will be. The ability to run my Slingplayer app on a 10" screen vs my iPhone is perfect for watching the news in bed. The ability to have a 10" TV at work, when I travel etc... This would be perfect. I use a 13" MBP now but A one pc solid tablet will fit the needs that many people have been searching for if it is half ipod/half Macbook.

Build it and they will come.
