I really haven't contributed much to the tablet discussions as I personally have no interest in owning one, no matter what the final product (if any) looks like. However, I did think of a reason why people would want it. I would assume its going to have an SSD in it, so it would appeal to those who don't want to dish out the extra money to have SSDs in notebooks AND want a bigger screen than iPod for movies. I would take a guess that this would mean the end for the iPod Classic as the storage would probably be similar, possibly even larger.

It'll really be aimed at those who want their media portable. I don't think it'll be meant for a notebook/computer replacement but instead those who want a larger iPod. Plus you throw in the e-reader capabilities, and I can really see this being a popular product.

Personally, I prefer old-fashioned books and movies on larger screens, but if I did regular traveling I'd probably be all over this.

I agree.

For me, it's not a replacement for my notebook, but rather an internet/eReader/media device. The eReader is crucial, because all of my text books are going to be PDF files.

EDIT

Oh and Flash would be frickin' splendid, but I won't hold my breath.

Pre-ordered my 32GB black 3g s today (releases 31. of july), and with an apple tablet and snow leopard in september, i can die happy - Even though that would be a waste of money

looking to downgrade from 3.1b to 3.0 :):apple::apple:

We could argue for months and months about how this is great or gimmicky, practical or impractical, or whatever!

I, for one, have faith in apple. I truly believe they can deliver something which makes all the critics say "OOOH... THAT'S what I can use it for... well played apple :) " but... in spite of all that, I don't see how apple expects ppl to be able to type on it!

Sure, great media pad. With apps, music, movies, blah blah blah. But the only thing that I can't imagine even APPLE getting to work correctly... is typing. A touch screen keyboard seems absolutely horrendous to me! I would much rather type on an iphone keypad than on tablet. Can you imagine having to "hover" your fingers over all the keys and touching them with no tactile feedback? I mean if it comes with a wireless keyboard then great, but that seems to take a lot away from it.

The only way that I can see an apple tablet succeeding is if it brings new technologies that are not possible on standard laptops. Sorta like a portable Microsoft surface kinda thing. They need to make this device so full of innovations that people will perfer using it over a regular notebook. If it's just osx with the ability to use your finger as the mouse pointer, it will not sell.

WHAT WILL MAKE OR BREAK THIS DEVICE IS HOW THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS IMPLEMENTED.

done screaming.

It need to be a perfect hybrid of Snow Leopard and iPhone/iPod Touch OS.

People think the iPhone O.S for this is a bad idea but it's not if for this it ran more like a regular OS allowing you to download files without relying on iTunes.

That is untrue. I work in hi-tech selling to the healthcare industry. You've been watching too much Star Trek. :)

Healhcare needs to fix their Business Process problems first (by computerizing and removing paper for examples) and then will go mainstream into individual tablet-thingies later.

Yes, so what better way to do that than with this device.

I can't believe the lack of imagination. I'd rather take this to the beach and keep in touch with email, watch a movie than take a macbook pro - plus it would fit into my beach bag better.

Or what about as a MIDI/DMX controlling device.

Or what about a photographer out on the road - SD slot on the site - instant check on a large screen.

What an amazing device - the uses are unlimited...

All signs point to it running the iPhone OS:

-Apple buying P.A. Semi to make chips which are very likely to show up in the tablet. (aka iPhone OS is already built for ARM processors, Snow Leopard is not).
-App Store. It would be a HUGE mistake not to have the App Store on the tablet.
-Multi-Touch. The iPhone OS GUI was created for Multi-Touch. OS X was not. Yes we have the Multi-Touch trackpads but the UI is not Multi-Touch friendly at all for a touch screen.
-It just makes sense!

Having said that... I can see that the two OSs flow back and forth now. Things originating in the iPhone OS end up in OS X, and technology in Snow Leopard will surely trickle to the iPhone OS.

I don't think hardware has been the hold up really besides the chips they will make. I think Apple understands the importance of the OS and its capabilities and features. I think you will see a stronger version of the iPhone OS with things like file support etc. Those things will then trickle to the iPhone/iPod Touch.

NOW, please tell me there will be a SWEET Apple TV update to connect with the tablet!

I'm guessing that the new device will focus on three areas of functionality:

  1. Movies - much like iPod focused on music, and all on a nice big (ish) screen
  2. e-books - they'll be available for download from iTunes
  3. iChat - a front facing camera will provide this feature

These will differentiate the new device from it's smaller brothers (iPhone/iPod touch).

RTP.

I feel a strange disturbance in the Reality Distortion Field...
Well the thing is that Apple's rumored netbook competitor is going to be an ARM based super powered and sized iPod Touch at $799.

You can run full blown OS X or Windows on a netbook. I never said anything about it being Core 2 fast either. It's a netbook and we know! If you can't compete with them make something else and pass it off as the same thing or better. Don't forget to charge more.

HAHA. Could you imagine a 10-inch device with phone capability? Maybe a cellular connection a la Kindle to browse the Web without Wi-Fi, but I think they're definitely right about it not being a cell phone. Could you see it? "Excuse me, my phone is ringing...", as someone pulls a 10-inch device out of their backpack (too big for pockets) and proceeds to hold it up to their face--with TWO HANDS, because that's what you'll need. :p

Yeah and I bet the speakerphone would be super loud! And finally a front facing camera!

I think most people are not thinking beyond the past/present. This is a new/future device. Something that breaks out of the same old, same old mold that everyone is used to. A keyboard/mouse/touch pad. A tablet is NOT revolutionary by any means, however if Apple does it up anything like the iPhone, it's going to be a huge success.

The possibilities of this device are endless, not to mention the ramifications it has on changing how we interact with technology. I am not sure about you all, but the ability to NOT be tethered to a desktop, laptop or netbook would be fabulous. A tablet would be ideal for travel, video and interactivity. It would be taken to a whole new level.

Some have referenced Star Trek. That's not too far off. Look at the "tablets" they passed around to each other. It's like e-paper but better. It can be used for students to actually take notes on. Not by typing but by writing. You know, the old fashioned way but digitally. This thing can/will probably have character recognition as well. Imagine that. It might also have a "dock" to turn it into a desktop system if you want to.

Again, you have to think outside the box. Laptops/Netbooks are pretty dated. It's the same form over and over again. It's not a bad thing, it's just boring and dated. This new device could change the way we interact with technology and might pave the way for a purely digital life - without paper.

also, if this device has word processing, spreadsheet, note taking abilities, this could be huge for the educational market for students looking for something portable if it is priced appropriately. Students are always looking for the coolest gadgets available, and who better to make a device like this than Apple.

also, just wondering, would this device have its own set of apps? you have iPhone/iPod apps for screens as small as the iPhone, you have Mac applications for Mac OS X, and you have this touch screen device. having iPhone sized apps scaled to a 10" screen just wouldn't seem right. also, would this device have multi-tasking enabled?
