I really look forward to Skype for OS X running on a tablet with front-facing camera over wireless-N. If it meets these criteria I will pay any amount.
I completely agree (well, maybe not
any amount). But sadly, I don't think they'll do this. If they do, their partner(s) on the 3G service side will make their business hooked to 3G miserable. The AT&T & Verizon duopoly is a freaking power that is NOT going to see their very lucrative 3G business model pretty much killed by any kind of very open wireless VOIP solution. They will do everything in their power to make such a terrific option for consumers FAIL to work properly.
This is also why all these dreams of just a cheap data-only 3G option also won't come to pass. Give us a really cheap data-only plan, and you unchain VOIP from a wifi hotspot, basically creating the free roaming 3G experience for a fraction of current phone plan costs. That would be great for everyone involved... except those who make their money selling expensive 3G contract plans.
I too am hoping for wimax (instead of wifi) in this Tablet for this same reason. I think just about everyone- except the 3G duopolies- win if such solutions would come forth. I completely expected the last round of iPod Touches to come out with wimax instead of wifi, and apparently the wimax chip is already in there but only wifi is used (why? some say power drain, but I think AT&T threats), but I can easily see the behind closed doors sessions in which the warnings fly about doing anything that steps on the toes of the very profitable 3G contract models.
Just think about it: with just a big PR campaign pushing people to switch to wimax routers open to the general public (dual band, guest band, or just open), enough public action and we could all create our own national wireless (wimax) network freely shared and thus compatible with wimax Touches, Tablets, and similar devices. That would give us a pretty good wireless VOIP solution with no contract, and no monthly fees. Sometimes I think all this "home networking hacking" and similar is just propaganda to try to scare the crowd into locking their routers down. I wonder...
And I guess we can dream.
