I hope they don't get their cameras from the same people who made the HP webcams, being black I want to be able to log into it..

I can see it already.

iPad: No user present, please look into the camera please.

Me: I'm looking right at it you piece of crap.

iPad: No user present, please look into the camera please.

Me: Sweet Jesus, not only am I stuck with just an iPhone on steroids, but I can't even use it. *Gives iPad to coworker*

iPad: Greetings new user, would you like me to setup an account for you?

Me: Aaaaaarrrrrrggggggg!!!!

Having read the original article and having seen that video on YouTube before, I was wondering when someone would reference it. Ha! Good one there.

From a conversation with someone that knows.

iPad, iSlate, or iTablet will be the name, they aren't saying which yet. It will not be cheap, but will be worth it. Cost will be close to the iMac.

MacMini updates

and

MacBook Pro updates

No mention of the camera, but that doesn't mean yeah or nay.

To those of you who think that facial recognition is too unreliable as a means of authentication:
You're probably right - but securing critical data is maybe not the point at all. But it would be nice if every family member was greeted with their own home screen whenever they picked this thing up, presented with the new episode of their favourite tv-show or just a "The new edition of your favourite e-magazine is out. Want to browse/purchase?"

My theory on what the tablet is.

Apple introduced the iPhone and got a great reception
Apple introduced the App store and it was revelation
Apple will introduce the Tablet and it will shock

How do these things relate to each other. Apple needed to test the water to see if the market place was ready for a touch screen device. That could explain the iPhones price on release.

The next test was the App Store. Apple needed to get even more developers interested in developing programs for the Mac platform. The tablet fits into the App Store ecosystem.

The shock of the Tablet is that it is such a simple step from a notebook or desktop. A bit like the saying “you cannot see the forest through the trees”. Everyone will be saying, “Why did I not think of that”.

The Tablet will leverage both the experience gained from bring the iPhone market (what people like and dislike about the iPhone), which was developed parallel to the Tablet, and the reach and knowledge on the App Store. The developers who have developed Apps for the store, will be 90% of the way to developing their Apps for the Tablet.

This is not to say the Tablet uses the iPhone OS. It also does not us OSX. It uses Tablet OS. But, Tablet OS leverages both OSX depth and iPhone ease of use on a touch screen device.

What is the thing that will blow away the worlds tech jocks? It’s user friendly, powerful, it has multiple applications, and it just works.

Jesus another ipad/islate story !
Can we not condense all of these into a single article, seriously this site is jumping on any and all rumours about anything even tenuously tablet related and hammering it to death, its kinda boring.
I cannot help but feel you guys are being paid by Apple to pre-hype this thing.
There are going to be a helluve of a lot of messy keyboards and monitors come the 27th.

With all due respect, the site is called "MacRUMORS"...
If you just want actual news, I'm sure there are some other web sites/forums you could spend your time on :p

If they can put a video recorder in the Nano then why wouldnt they put it in the tablet?

Exactly, no longer a question of whether or not it CAN be done, if in fact it ever was a question. But rather a question of the need for it or lack thereof in this particular device. Anyway, people will be blown away. This is the last time I comment on the Newton until it's release. ;)

Why can't these people take REAL photos of the product... oh, because they are fake.

It would be more interesting to see the docking port, the back with the possible stripe, the words written on the back. Two home buttons? That's over kill.

No doubt...
That has to be the worst possible angle to take of the device.
I see more detail about the guys hand, and the frickin' carpet.
I highly doubt an Apple office has craptastic carpet like that...and grey cubical walls. This isn't exactly a clean-room or lock-and-key R&D facility.
And the pyramid background? I remain unconvinced.

I use my Logitech orbital webcam that has pan around and can follow my head using face-tracking...

Only thing is I shave my head and am as Caucasian as they come...so when I stand in front of my White Board it loses me

If the tablet has facial recognition I'll have to move my desk around or replace the white-board with a traditional Black Board.

I'm surprised by that as well, there should be enough contrast between you and a white board, I can't believe anyone is that pasty :D

That brings up the question of how the device will be used/held. It's not going to be at the same angle as your current webcam. You're not going to hold it with stretched arms. I really would like to see how Apple designed the device.

I really look forward to Skype for OS X running on a tablet with front-facing camera over wireless-N. If it meets these criteria I will pay any amount.

I completely agree (well, maybe not any amount). But sadly, I don't think they'll do this. If they do, their partner(s) on the 3G service side will make their business hooked to 3G miserable. The AT&T & Verizon duopoly is a freaking power that is NOT going to see their very lucrative 3G business model pretty much killed by any kind of very open wireless VOIP solution. They will do everything in their power to make such a terrific option for consumers FAIL to work properly.

This is also why all these dreams of just a cheap data-only 3G option also won't come to pass. Give us a really cheap data-only plan, and you unchain VOIP from a wifi hotspot, basically creating the free roaming 3G experience for a fraction of current phone plan costs. That would be great for everyone involved... except those who make their money selling expensive 3G contract plans.

I too am hoping for wimax (instead of wifi) in this Tablet for this same reason. I think just about everyone- except the 3G duopolies- win if such solutions would come forth. I completely expected the last round of iPod Touches to come out with wimax instead of wifi, and apparently the wimax chip is already in there but only wifi is used (why? some say power drain, but I think AT&T threats), but I can easily see the behind closed doors sessions in which the warnings fly about doing anything that steps on the toes of the very profitable 3G contract models.

Just think about it: with just a big PR campaign pushing people to switch to wimax routers open to the general public (dual band, guest band, or just open), enough public action and we could all create our own national wireless (wimax) network freely shared and thus compatible with wimax Touches, Tablets, and similar devices. That would give us a pretty good wireless VOIP solution with no contract, and no monthly fees. Sometimes I think all this "home networking hacking" and similar is just propaganda to try to scare the crowd into locking their routers down. I wonder...

And I guess we can dream.

Portrait or landscape?

I do think a front facing camera would be interesting. But where do you put it on the long side ie: macbook or short side ie: iphone earpiece? What do you think will be the primary orientation for this mystery device?

They better have one. I see video conf happening on the run with 3G.

I can't wait for LTE to roll out - which is when I will buy one.

Unless Apple surprises me with something very innovative that is a must-buy...

i see this in itablet 2.0 not 1.0

Are you in a fog?

Seriously, let's just wait a few days longer. If customers don't like the product, then they don't have to buy it. All this "I want ..." and "Why don't they ..." is so WANTING. What everyone should be doing is waiting until it's out to see whether it has the features they will NEED.

Death is better than iChat.

The problem with a forward-facing webcam is that Apple would need to write software to allow some kind of video chat.

And for many years now, the very best video-chat software that Apple can manage is iChat.

And to be honest, iChat is incapable of connecting two computers with any degree of predictability. It sucks. There's a guy on the Apple forums who's life is dedicated to the electronic voodoo needed to get one iChat talking to another. Which ports are open. Is the router configured. Have you tried turning around three times and spitting on the ground?

iChat is so flakey that two Macs - both using Apple routers - can not talk to each other.

If a firewall was made of damp tissue-paper, iChat could not punch a hole through it.

So unless the forward-facing camera uses something as robust as Skype, there really is no point to it.

actually - i dont have that experience. i am using gmail-account and it works better than i am using my .me/.mac...might be a solution for you?

Video conferencing, facial recognition, and maybe even input via swiping/finger movements (as opposed to or in addition to actual touching). Maybe that is the "surprising/unexpected way to interact" that has been rumored.

Thinking about it, I am convinced that this will be the key feature of the iPad!

I imagine people in coffee shops swiping through their iPad papers without touching. Could have a similar impact like the "white earbuds revolution".

When this tablet is announced, it's a given that it will not have everthing on our wish list. In 6 months another hardware feature will be added, another one 6 months after that..... They do this til they get it right, meanwhile we have bought every version of the thing. Guarantee it will lack something so important and won't make sense, then this forum will be flooded with complaints.
I personally have no need for a tablet. iPhone does so much and is small but not too small.
