1lb isn't portable? You need to get to the gym pronto.

Flash? Does the iPhone have flash? Has that hurt the iPhone's usability and sales?

Finally electronic newspapers and mags that look and read like their paper counterparts

Books that turn pages like you turn the pages on a book and w/o annoying flickering in between flips.

Viewing video on a decent sized screen

Viewing pictures w/o having to squint

Optional 3G service

That's not a media device to you? Not sure what other kind of media you are looking for Apple to cover. (BTW Flash is a format, not a type of media).

This is a fantastic product with so many uses my mind pops at all the possibilities.

When i was talking about portability i didn't mention weight. Its about the size as much as weight. Thats why many people prefer the 13" MBP.

Iphone doesn't have flash no but with a better processor and larger screen why wouldn't the iTab?

Newspapers and magazines, well i can buy a newspaper and once ive read it give it to someone else to read at work. Once i've read it how many times would i want to re-read it? Books would be the better use of the iTabs abilities.

Video viewing would be better on bigger screen yes

Photos is good too but would be better with higher resolution

Iphone has 3g as standard

Im aware flash isnt a type of media, never said it was

I didnt say it wasnt a media device, i said its not a massive leap from the iphone barring the ebook reader use.

Though it will probably sell a lot just because it looks nice and because of all the apple diehards, I won't be getting one of these. I was hoping for a builtin iSight so I can give this to my mom and grandma so they can use it for skype. My grandma cannot be bothered with turning on and logging on to a computer.

Don't get me wrong, I like everything else about it. Even the fact that it's basically an oversized iTouch. But the front-facing camera would have been the selling point for me.

I'll have to wait 18 months for version 2, I guess. I hope you guys don't buy too much so apple would put more features on it quicker.

I mentioned this earlier but it bares repeating. Many companies do not allow devices with built-in cameras. If I want to carry this thing to work I don't want to be told to take it back home because cameras are not allowed. IS THIS THING REALLY FOR YOUR GRANDMA???

OR we can finally ditch that ****** standard in the past where it belongs (why is everyone so against propriety apple stuff but for some reason love adobe's?). HTML5 is the future.
Right, just like OGG and AAC were going to make MP3 obsolete because they're better formats. Flash will be around for a loooooooooong time whether you like it or not, standards like that don't go away that easily.

I really expected a better interface, maybe in addition to just an iPhone virtual keyboard. I really wanted a stylus handwriting system too. Imagine how a stylus system on the iPad can revolutionize the classroom for note taking where a qwerty keyboard just won't cut it? (math, art, graphs, charts...) The power and speed of a laptop with the versatility of paper. This is one of the gaps that the iPad was suppose to bridge too!

I just hope somebody can make a third party stylus system with the proper handwriting app for this thing. Maybe a stylus that can connect to the dock for power? Doable you think?

Other than that, seems like a solid product that will sell, though not many surprises here. Most of the rumors were spot on (well the ones that made sense). Honestly, who could have believed the one about a Verizon tablet or a full OS X device? Microsoft tried full Windows on a tablet a long time ago and that experiment failed. Also Apple and Verizon has had a very sour relationship as if the ads are not enough indication.

One single slim device for carrying around textbooks at school and writing papers and listening to music and cheaper than a Macbook? Forget about it. It's a slam dunk for students.

Yes, rich students that can afford a laptop AND an iPad. This is not going to be able to replace the laptop (not even a single USB port!)

I think all the other students will get by with their iPods AND laptop.

"Keyboard

Typing in portrait is better than anticipated but still quite a stretch for our average-sized hands, which means that letters like F G and H will take a moderate conditioning for some. What about in landscape mode, sitting flat on the table? Well this is problematic too, as the iPad sort of wobbles. The back is not perfectly flat, meaning your typing surface is never perfectly flat, so the virtual keyboard becomes that much more difficult to use."

(Gizmodo)

Gizmodo also has a post that claims the iPad will kill netbooks dead and most people will never consider a laptop again.

Delusional? Yea, I'd say so.

In any case: tomtom will probably bring their app to this as well. They have quality GPS in there gadget for the iPhone.

Since I'm in the market for a new 13" MBP, I considered an ipad before today. Have to say I'll be passing on the iPad and wait for the next MBP revision.

Why would one want to carry this to work? If you are working in a company that does not allow built-in cameras, they won't want you surfing the internet or spending time of facebook either.

I am curious to see how this stacks up amongst other tablets that will probably be released this year. I personally don't see the tablet market having much impact in the tech industry until they come down to the $200-300 range. Will there be Android or Windows-based tablets that offer just as much, if not more than the iPad, and at a competitive price? I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Uh...so your real life of being a pro photographer has nothing to do with electronics (cough**digitalcoughcough**camera) ? I find it funny many people who subconsciously love gadgets like to tell other people that they don't.

And I will never read books on an electronic device, I really try to stay off of them as much as possible so I can have a real life.

I don't pretend to know all that much about GPS technology, but is the chip in this thing going to be good enough to make it a feasible standalone GPS device, or will it need some kind of adapter, like the Touch?

I'd hate to think how big (or how expensive) the dash mount kit would be. :)

So definitely no multitasking....Is multitasking a hardware or software function? I.e. Could a future OS upgrade enable multitasking on tablet or does it require an entirely different processor?
For me this is the only dealbreaker. Still, there is no reason to get a Kindle now.

Yeh, because we all know being rich means having $2000.

Dissapointed

Yeah I'm a student and having the ability to have your 20lb textbooks as apps (In addition to the physical copies) would be nice. There is NO substitute for physical textbooks!

- This device desperately needs to run FULL versions of Microsoft WORD and POWER POINT

- However, I do not think many students will buy the iPad. The device itself looks pretty damn awkward to use and DOES NOTHING MORE THAN AN iPHONE. This device is still 100% reliant on the docking system which makes it nothing more than an oversized iphone...and if you are reading this, chances are you already have an iPhone, which makes an iPad purchase unnecessary.
-This thing would have had to run something in between iPhone OS and Mac OSX to make it interesting. Besides, aren't we tired of the "iPhone-look" already?

Should be interesting to say the least but as of now, I'd say the Lenovo U1 is what I expected the iPad to be (but with Apple's polish).

I would be very interested in an Android-based tablet that has access to the same apps as the Android Market.

The Droid has been a terrific phone so far, and a tablet version that is just a bigger version would be great.
