Could the tablet be the reason for the HUGE data center that Apple is building??? I remember everyone speculating on what the data center would be used for a while back...

Maybe, but what's the point of speculating. None of this will come out soon. Right now Apple has NO subscription services and their only cloud services are iTunes and MobileMe. iWork.com is not even worth mentioning...Ooops!

I think we'll find out on the 27th. My gut tells me Apple wants to send out invites "sometime during" CES just to bug them. So anytime between Thursday and next Monday we will see those invites.

I say $699 for white plastic tablet ( for students ) and $999 Pro Tablet made out of aluminum.

For most it would be useless. Virtually no one is going to buy an expensive media player when a laptop can do the same and far more. It doesn't take a genius to see this though I do have a high IQ.

Like I said the only people who'll buy it are people who have money to burn, have half a brain, will buy anything with an Apple logo, or are bleeding edge tech geeks bordering on nerd-dom.

If I buy a book reader it'll be a Kindle. E-ink is easier on the eyes than a LCD screen.

EDIT: I forgot all those people who sit in the bathroom for an hour. I'm sure the iSlate is perfectly catered towards you as well.

Sorry, but your text feels as if you hate your guts!

Highly Unlikely

I'm not sure why I'm not reading more people saying this is clearly an inaccurate amount of money! No freakin' way is Apple going to charge that much, it would cannibalize their current markets, and it's too new of a tech for a 4 digit price tag. 500/600 will be the max price.

Weren't there quite a few stories in the past months about how we'd be surprised at how cheap it'd be?

All depends on the screen

If the screen is good and eink like, such as the product that Pixel Qi claims to be, I would seriously think about forking over $800 - $1000 bucks for this.

If it's just a screen like an iPhone, no f'n way!

I'm interested in seeing how it's executed. Not going to lie.. I'd buy it if it were anything like the touchscreen experience of the iPod Touch/iPhone. I'd use it as a secondary device to my Macbook. I just love gadgets no matter how useless...:(

hah! Me too. hard to justify $1000 (or whatever UK price will be) when I have a perfectly good Macbook. Any advice on how to convince a money concious wife?

A thousand dollars? No frigging way. 500-600 and I'll buy it, maybe, if I can see several fields where it truly helps making my life better. But 1000$? Sorry, Steve, not gonna happen.

I think that this screen technology IN COLOR (flexible/scratch proof/shatter proof) with Apple styling is the way to go. .25" thin and weighs approx 1lb. That's portable! Interestingly enough screen was made by LG whom Apple has a screen relationship with. Not sure if it exists in color.

The screen is flexible, yes, but no way the device itself would be flexible.

Yeah me too

$1,000 is too much for me. I'll wait for the 2nd or 3rd version and something around $500 to $600.

I'll wait for it to come down too, just like the Mac Book came down several hundred dollars over the last 10 year . . . no wait, that NEVER happened.

Wonder what colors the tablet will be? Black and white like the iphone or Black and Aluminum. Decisions, decisions for :apple: Can't wait to see it!

CNBC just reported from CES that the price points for the Apple tablet are likely to be $799 and $1199. They tend to be pretty close.

BTW I estimated $1100 cash price.

Rocketman

LOL, this had better be a computer for that price. It's $100 more for a MBP (same price or cheaper on many other sites than Apple's) and I would be surprised people would spend $1100 just to read books and magazines.
