iLounge reports that it has received a number of tips about Apple's much rumored tablet computer from the same source who tipped off the site about the fifth-generation iPod nano. The source claims that the tablet device will sport a 10.7" screen offering a resolution in the neighborhood of 720p, will run iPhone OS rather than Mac OS X, and should be announced on or before January 19th, 2010 for release in May or June of 2010.

The report also claims that the device will be very iPhone-like in appearance, complete with a curved back, and that it will come in two varieties, one with 3G wireless connectivity and one without. Not designed to compete with low-cost netbooks, the tablet is reportedly being targeted to provide substantial book and magazine reading functionality along with an enhanced experience for the traditional functions of the iPhone and iPod touch.

Finally, the report notes that Steve Jobs, who has been reported to be almost exclusively focused on the project, has not yet given the device final approval and that the source places the likelihood of a release at approximately 80% at this point in time.

I really can't imagine the Apple Tablet having a 10.7" screen and running the iPhone OS.

If it ran Mac OS X, I could see the bigger screen. I think that if it does run the iPhone OS, the screen size will be in the 6"-8" category.

I second that. Really would like to have it run OS X. Having a hard time seeing an iPhone OS $800 device.

Let's hope it's a more advanced version of iphone os with wider software support, because i'm not reading books on a screen that doesn't use e-ink.

Will all these specific screen sizes that are different in each rumor, it is easy to track down who is leaking what.

iPhone OS? boo!

Agreed. While I can see the functionality of the OS on a larger screen (and the increased capability that will result), I expect Apple to do a little bit better. Surely the larger (much larger) screen size will allow for more innovation in the OS, rather than a mere scaling of the iPhone software. As always people, this is RUMOR not FACT so always take it with a hunk of salt (especially when they claim the product will launch so far away from now).

I need a new mac, so I've been on the fence waiting to see what happens with the tablets. I find this hard to believe especially as it conflicts with recent posts about the scalability if snow leopard.

I still believe it will basically replace the lowly plastic MacBook and run a full OS.

If that is the case

Failure.

Iphone os? More limited use? Awsome, sign me up. Not.

I look at screens enough each day, I would rather read a real book or magazine than pay big bucks for a fancy new book-reading gadget that, from the sounds of it, can not do much else.

Shame on apple. (If it is true)

iPhone OS to be the new OSX?

Sounds like Apple is slowly transitioning and getting people used to the idea of a fully touchscreen OS. So iPhone really was Steve's development platform for the next light-years ahead OS, interesting.

With iPhone OS, it'll act more like a netbook. Kindle competitor maybe, but no one reads anymore, right? I do have the Kindle ap on my iPhone which is cool. There will be some other new big functions I'm sure. Rounded back is just odd though. I might bite on this although I was hoping for something along the lines of an 11" MBA. I can't imagine touch typing on a tablet (maybe).

iPhone OS? Feh.

Gimping the product with the iPhone OS makes the thing a giant iTouch. Sure I love my iPhone and wouldn't trade it for any other phone on the market but I can't see why you'd want a large format iTouch/iPhone to run any of the apps that are currently available. Granted I wouldn't want to attempt to run Maya on it but I can see wanting to run Photoshop. I can see wanting to run Quickbooks (please port Quickbooks Premiere, are you listening Intuit? Get your sh*t together). Imagine being able to walk around your warehouse doing inventory or filling an order without having to print stuff out. I don't see the MacOS major app developers chomping at the bit to port to yet another OS. Hell, it's hard enough to KEEP developers on the Mac let alone getting them to port.

you guys do know Steve and Apple probably know better than you about which operating system to include in the device heck you dont even know one fact about the device.

re: good for developers?

Actually, I can see exactly why Apple would go this route, and why of all people, it'd be GREAT for the iPhone developer crowd!

1. By keeping the new tablet computer running an enhanced/modified version of the iPhone OS instead of traditional OS X, Apple can easily differentiate the device. (Otherwise, you run the risk of it coming in at about the same price point as a Macbook, and cutting into its sales. Instead of, say, 2 million Macbooks sold in a time frame, you'd have 1 million of them and 1 million tablets, if 50% of the people decided they liked the tablet form-factor better than a traditional notebook design.) With it running iPhone OS, Apple can get more "crossover" sales.... People who buy a Macbook AND one of the tablets, or people who have no interest in a computer running OS X at all, but may already use an iPhone - and would like a "book reader" and web surfing device that works the same general way as the phone.

2. Presumably, this tablet would be "backwards compatible" with most or all of the existing iPhone apps, so it's just one more device people might buy those apps for. As earlier rumors stated, I'd assume a tablet would simply do new things like allowing multitasking of iPhone apps, and running them in independent "windows" on the screen. Apps updated or written from scratch to detect they're on the tablet instead of an iPhone could take advantage of the full screen resolution.....

Having the iPhone OS is not that large of a problem from me, but I can't imagine why that would be good for iPhone developers.

And to think just a few hours ago I was getting mocked on the other thread for questioning the market viability of this thing. It was never going to run full OSX.

A shame.

But, let's see what it can do while using an iPhone OS. Perhaps... oh, hell, we're doomed.

if they expect the tablet to survive and have it run the iPhone OS, they are going to have to update it so it can run multiple programs, and then maybe we'll see that functionality come to the iphone itself.

Anyone who ever expected full-blown OSX on this thing was having a giraffe.

Nice to see they're sticking to the old 80-20 rule.
