Man, it must be 'lets post comments on MacRumors' morning down at the asylum

I would hazard the opinion that Apple's engineers know far better what OS to use for a tablet machine. AFAIK it was common opinion that any tablet would be running a variant of iPhone OS - it would be crazy to run Mac OS X. How would you even use it without a mouse !?

Apple are going to target this at the web browsing, emailing, book reading market. And I tell you something - they are going to CLEAN UP. It's Game Over for Kindle and Sony eBook reader.

It's going to be interesting seeing this work. I have confidence, but right now it's being tested. Then again: rumours.

That wasn't much of a game to start with, tbf.

I think it's about time to refer to this as a media pad. It isn't going to be a full on Mac.

darn. i was really hoping for a totally new os. one somewhere between iphone and snow leopard. i was also hoping for phone, not just network. i would just use headphone and keep it in the messenger bag i carry everywhere. what i was hoping would be a must have is sounding not so much like a must have.

Steve and gang discussing...

Ives: I don't think it's appropriate to start throwing around generalizati-

Phil: Asdsdsd!!! If I may.... This isn't some OS that is usable on a larger screen... uhh, iPhone OS has it's place, and we've selected it for the iPhone!

Steve: I simply don't understand this Luddite attitude. Especially from an Apple employee! I mean, how can we stand in the light of awesomeness, and not act?

Phil: Oh what's so great about awesomeness, it's a violent, penetrative force that scars what it explores. What you call awesomeness, I call the rape of our product line.

release date?

"announced on or before January 19th, 2010 for release in May or June of 2010?"

That doesn't make sense. Why announce that early when release date is 5 or 6 months away.

iPhone OS meaning Apple will control the device. I will not be buying one. They've ruined the iPhone 3GS by the stupid signing requirements and not allowing downgrades.

Virtual OS Hopefully

If this tablet does end up running iPhone OS I will definitely not be buying one, and it sounds like most everyone else won't be either. It just seems too coincidental that Mac OS X has been slowly integrating all these touchscreen friendly technologies into the OS to not use them.

Coverflow in the Finder
Top Sites in Safari
Expose in the Dock

All point to a Mac OS X touchscreen device.

However, there could be a cool compromise in allowing iPhone OS apps to run in a virtual environment much like the iPhone simulator found in XCode. This would keep developers from having to create yet another version of their app to fit a new screen size and resolution.

Who knows?

Would the device need FCC approval? If so, that's why they have to pre-announce, like the iPhone.

wah wah wah waaaaah

So the tablet is just another way to whore the App Store as I suspected. I seriously hope Apple changes their mind.

The iBook Reader

Wow, an iPod touch, but designed for... reading books? really?

And I already thought of a great name for it!!

"The iBook"!

Oh, wait...

Not designed to compete with low-cost netbooks, the tablet is reportedly being targeted to provide substantial book and magazine reading functionality...

I thought people don't read anymore, Steve?

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” [Jobs] said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Pick one: Steve changed his mind or this rumor is horse manure.

Phil: Is lunch here yet?

IMHO, if it turns out to be essentially a larger iPhone, Apple will have missed an opportunity for millions of satisfied iPhone users who have embraced their brand to purchase a complementary device. It's analogous to purchasing a MacBook and a MacBook Pro -- generally, it's one or the other and everyone already has one.

It won't be very practical to set the tablet on a desk and touch-type with a curved back. :(

iPhone OS = OS X optimized for ARM minus Finder + touch screen UI.

I'd much rather have an OS running apps designed and optimized for a touch interface then a desktop OS shoehorned into a touch device. I can't imagine any benefit whatsoever using an application like iTunes or Excel on a touchscreen device when those apps are expecting precision input from a mouse or keyboard.

This is a lesson that Microsoft's ventures into the tablet space have taught (but MS itself despite a decade of work on it has failed to learn as yet- Maybe it will fair better with Courier?). Using a desktop OS with a desktop shell on a tablet form factor makes for an underwhelming experience. It hobbles both the hardware and the software. Users who prefer a mobile desktop experience are better off sticking with laptops. Tablets at the present level of hardware and software technology simply can't provide a good experience for most desktop applications.

A curved back? Bad idea imo. A flat back with rounded edges would be nice.

With the Sony announced e-book daily edition with 'free wireless', the tablet market keeps moving. It will be hard to come up with a 'gotta have' product right out of the gate unless they include some earthshaking feature that would make Spock jealous... Yes I realize that the Sony daily edition isn't a 'tablet' per se. It is however a very usable (or so it seems right now) piece of equipment. IF it comes out in the $500-$600 range, it could rock the world and create greater demand for something more capable that provides the same feature of getting daily updates of publications...

Apple's first attempt at a tablet could end up being a 'Zune'. DOA but they usually come back strong...

This is the iPhone OS or Core OS as the State of the Union address touched on. And its the OS in half to 1 1/2 years time. I'd say it'll have changed a fair bit by then - basically the iPhone OS will have developed a hell of a lot more. Based on 10.6, or even something approaching 10.7

And netbooks, too. Easier to use, bigger display, without having to put it down on something to use it. Everything the average netbook can do (outside of Windows itself) and more. Methinks this 'tablet' may even make a big dent in the handheld gaming console market.

Pointless.

If it runs iPhone OS, it just won't sell. Why buy that when you could have... an iPhone?
