Apple are going to target this at the web browsing, emailing, book reading market. And I tell you something - they are going to CLEAN UP. It's Game Over for Kindle and Sony eBook reader.

There's no competition unless this device sports e-ink. Nobody whose serious about reading will buy this thing instead of a kindle or e-reader. It's like saying that this pad will be 'game over' for large screen tvs; sure you can watch movies on both, but one will be a miserable experience compared to the other.

I don't mind how, just make it, for Christ's sake!

It would be ironic, if Microsoft's tablet came out sooner than Apple's. We saw pics, both look great, but two screen are so much better than one (although, to protect the screen, Apple's version would also need some case with a flat cover).

I don't mind if they will not run full computer OS, but using mobile OS would be a bit of a mistake, unless the devices will be underpowered.

USB/Mini USB, SD card slot, wifi, bluetooth and decent battery life, please!

Oh, and experience suggests that the first generation from Apple will have overheating, battery life and cracking plastic problems.

iphone OS is a no go . . Oh boy. I hope that is not true. I can't believe I'm saying this but, I don't know if any one really needs and enhanced iphone, at least not in that form factor.I hope this last rumor is just completely false.

If true, what.a.piece.of.crap. I would not fork over my $ to buy one just to be able to run iPhone OS on a larger screen. Ebook reading experience? Nope, not without e-ink. Multimedia viewing? Not with limited codec support at that price point.

I really hope this 'rumor' is wrong.

who cares what OS it runs

I could care less what OS it runs. I simply want a kindle like device for reading that allows for annotation. If it works as some kind of extension to a primary computer to allow easy web browsing on the couch, or act as a nice universal remote control for my home theater that would be great bonus.

What possibly would you do with a slate tablet computer and OSX? It sounds great but what would be the purpose?

Anyone who ever expected full-blown OSX on this thing was having a giraffe.

Ha ha. Yeah

You people actually thought it would run full OS X? Apple has been doing their darndest to make Macbooks cheaper and cheaper. At the same time the app store and iPhone ecosystem has exploded.

Put those 2 facts together and you tell me what the obvious answer is. That's right: Exactly what's in this story!

I'm shocked so many of you didn't expect this.

Doesn't sound remotely interesting. The power and functionality of the ipod touch and iphone are a novel gimick. If they want this tablet to be a great product they really need to do something different with it. They have to offer some features with the software/hardware that makes a lot of people go "wow, that would be really handy/fun/useful, i don't know how i've lived so long without that". If they come out with something that is like "wow, it's exactly like a giant ipod touch or iphone, but it's not a phone and you cannot put it in your pocket!" then they are in trouble.

You're not thinking

Obviously the interface wouldn't be the same as the iPhone even if the OS was iPhone-OS-based. I expect this device to have a huge impact. Check out the MS Courier book style tablet which was leaked on Gizmodo (similar approach with no Finder/File Explorer) - there is a race on to do this and do it right.

I disagree. e-ink is good for plain black-and-white, but we live in a color world. We also live in a world where the light isn't perfect for reading all the time; the two devices you mentioned are effectively worthless for roughly half the day. In my own case, I'm very serious about reading, and I absolutely do NOT like either the Sony or the Kindle--they're just too hard to read on as well as too clunky to use. On the other hand, my iPhone becomes my portable book whenever I'm in a waiting room or riding public transportation. A larger format with game-playing capabilities along with all the other '-Touch' apps to me is a good idea. Incomplete, but good.

Considering the size, I'd also expect that note-taking and keyboard-style input will also be significantly easier, allowing me to write even when I'm nowhere near my computer. I've been looking for something like this for a long time; I'm glad to see we may finally get the "Padd."

To be honest, Apple are being so mediocre at the moment (like bringing out the iPhone in the same form factor for THREE generations), this wouldn't surprise me if it's true.

There's something here that still hasn't been leaked. There is some selling point that we do not know... there has to be.

Look at it this way, if the rumored tablet is just going to be an overgrown iPod Touch it would have been released last year. With as much time as Apple is taking I have to assume that there is more to this than anyone outside Apple can appreciate.

At least I hope so.

I hope this rumor is wrong. It would be a huge dud IMHO.

While the ability to run iPhone OS apps would be very useful (i.e., in a fully-functional virtual machine with multitasking or multiple VM instances), some kind of full OS X - even a thinned down one - would make the device far more useful.

I wont spend $899 just to run multiple iPhone apps at the same time. Not worth it. But if I could run OS X apps as well as iPhone apps in a VM... now you've got something.

don't believe a word.

apple seems to have adopted a new strategy when it comes to products. instead of trying to hide them with super-tight security, they release tons of false info to keep people distracted.

the real product will probably bear little resemblance to what these rumors state.

remember the iphone and how varied (and wrong) the rumors were leading up to january. the only thing people got right was there was a phone and it was likely coming in january.

With SL taking up less HD space, actually yes I did.

Well this does kind of make sense. If the rumors of soon to be released MacBooks at a cheaper price comes about, why would Apple then come out with a competing device in the same price range running the same OS? With it being iPhone OS rather than OS X, it is more of a step up from the Touch rather than competition for the new MacBook. It is a whole different market. That being said, I would prefer the new MacBook myself. Apple is really pushing the App store and especially the game thing. So you have to figure whatever new device comes out is going to have to be compatible. This will definitely be the funnest Touch yet (not that I would get one). What amazed me though about this rumor is the part that said that there is only an 80% chance of it being released.

curved back? how are you supposed to put it down on a table and type/touch on it? doesn't sound reasonable to me.

iPhone OS? well, i expect it to run more than just apps.

well, it's wait and see.

The iPhone is all about the software. The hardware's job is to be as thin and un-noticable as possible. That's what it is.

It's as thin as they can make it at the moment. What else can they do?

can't be a valid book reader unless it uses digital paper. You really need the weeks-long battery life and the easy-to-read-in-direct-sunlight qualities of digital paper to compete against the kindle, et al.

Apple knows that.

Also the iphone OS is not built for something so big...it would not work without considerable modification, and that modification would break all the apps, which would be the only reason to have iphone OS on a tablet in the first place...

or will they let you run the apps in little floating "iphone windows" on the tablet concurrently? that might not be so bad...

it would end up looking a lot like the MS touch OS, though...

Check out wolfpackfan's post below yours.

It's not about what's possible, it's about their sales strategy.

Killing $1,200 laptop sales with an $800 tablet makes no sense.
Up-selling $300 iPod users to an $800 tablet makes a LOT of sense.

EDIT: I can totally imagine a full OS X tablet. It will cost $1,500. Deal with it.
Any rumors of an $800 device are clearly going to be more like an iPhone than a Macbook. No doubt.

This is just a rumor and should be taken as a grain of salt. Those tips probably just to throw us off what the real product will look like.

iPhone OS can be a good thing IMO. Hardware, battery life, etc. It's doesn't mean its going to have the same Springboard interface like iPhone does. Maybe its just using the iPhone's core OS and services and a new Finder like navigation.

The only thing that would make me want to buy this is if it has pen input. Otherwise I'm going for Lenovo's X series tablet.
