I'm glad they took away the downvote button. You can still criticize, you just can't be lazy about it by hitting a little arrow button. If you disagree with someone, why not say so?

Also, nanny state? Police state? I didn't realize MacRumors was a state. Do we get our own TLD now?

They took away down votes in order to reduce negativity so replying to everyone telling them they are wrong may not be the net win they were looking for. Plus there are a lot of you so it is a little time consuming to reply to each of you.

No, UK keyboards don't have a '/' key therefore they couldn't access www.apple.com/uk.

I am wondering that as well. Chances are the orginal owners kept turning Apple offers down and Apple knew they could not go after them for squatting on it as it was a legit domain name more than likely dating back a long time.

I would not be surprised if it was well into the 7 figure range.

It's an interesting negotiation problem.

A has something that B, and only B, wants.

The minimum price that A would be willing to sell for is a lot less than the maximum price that B would be willing to pay, so a deal can be done. There is also no time limit (unlike with the iPhone name; Cisco had to sell at some point or Apple would have had to pick a different name, and the iPhone name would have been worthless). But of course A wants to get as much as possible, and B wants to pay as little as possible.

What happens if the Union were to break up? May as well focus all the attention on .eng now.

There are three crowns represented in the UK, so unless BOTH Scotland and Northern Ireland leave it's pretty safe to continue using that name for the country.

Why

Why doesn't someone drop one of the guys a call on their mobiles to see how much they got? (their mobile numbers on on their website!? crazy!) :D

Doesn't apple.com automatically redirect to the Apple site of the country you're accessing it from? Did I make that up?

No. And if you go to the /uk site, view the discussions in support section, then go to 'store' via the top bar, it defaults back to the US store.

I thought keyboards in the UK didn't have the # sign but had / - or at least the keyboards did when I studied abroad there back in 2001 (from what I recall, anyway).

That was before the Maastricht EU treaty. Now all keyboards in the UK have to have the German QWERTZ layout, so the punctuation has changed too.

I think so, but the problem here was that apple.co.uk would take you to a completely different website and I guess people in the UK are used to typing co.uk

Like I say, I know the guys personally and have worked with them for many years (though not since I became an author full-time). Believe me, theirs is NOT a failed business and I don’t know why you think you have some insider knowledge that you clearly don’t. The reason they held back for so long is because they did not need the money. I had this discussion with them about three years ago. They are VERY good at what they do and make a ton of money doing it.

I really dislike it when people post comments like yours as though they’re stating fact. At least have the decency to put the words "I reckon..." at the front of your statement in the same way that I reckon you’re an idiot.

Apple fanboys are always very quick to dismiss any adversary (minor, temporary, incorrectly assumed to be etc.) of Apple as being a failed bunch of clowns.

Before 1996? The internet was still in its infancy. The Power Mac 9600 hadn't even come out yet lol..
