(Note that he uses QR code functionality for something - likely to add the store "owner" to his friends list). If you watch from the start of the video you'll see that he did in fact walk into a "shop", all the goods transactions were physical, and the only thing that wechat was used for was to make the final payment.
Dude! Thanks for giving me hope that there are real humans on MacRumors forums who are actually interested in the tech and the issues surrounding it (rather than brainlessly whining and snarking like uniformed children). Fascinating video!

It's interesting tech. I can see how people who use We Chat would stick with the app as it continues adding on new features, even to the point of feature bloat, because they are used to it. What's ironic is that at least from a brick & mortar standpoint, that kind of payment system is actually older tech, and less convenient for shoppers. When I check out at Walgreens all I do is hold my phone up to the terminal put my thumbprint on it and I'm done. Using QR codes requires finding an app, opening it, finding the scanning tool, and taking a photo. Clumsy.

One reason it's so ubiquitous is likely that the infrastructure costs for retailers are almost nil. No expensive NFC hardware required. Just print out a QR code, tape it to the counter and bam, you're done!

I'm curious now whether Apple's considerations have to do with defending the 30% agency fee they collect for their marketplace content, or the small percentage they collect on Apple Pay transactions.

On a side note, I'd love if Apple would encorporate QR code recognition into the camera app, where it would automatically recognize it and forward you to Safari or ApplePay, depending on the type of code. This would greatly simplify QR use.

I imagine they could also maintain a "bad QR code" database, and block forwarding to scammy stuff.

My need is to have all my desires met and be carried around on the backs of 12 beautiful new slave girls each day. If I don't get that, it will be extremely inconvenient for me and I will suffer. And since my "convenience" is an actual need of the utmost importance, it is up to the world to provide me with these things. Get on it, world.

Efficient food, clean air, clean water, and sleep. These are the things a human needs. People can and do live long and even happy lives with only those things and nothing else. The rest of everything else you can imagine, are wants, and the frivolous satisfying of these unnecessary desires, to pamper you and make life convenient, is a luxury. Convincing you they are your actual needs is how we make our millions and finance new fighter jets, but it is not reality. Familiarize yourself with actual suffering.

Then yesterday's VR update is perfect for you.
Though I guess you won't be able to afford them since you are at the bottom of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
