Screw apple??

Screw this video... Who cares!! People who want to take apart their iPhone will get their way into the device anyway.

Next.

I understand both sides. Honestly, it's Apple trying to prevent the YouTube kids that want a colored iphone who screw up the phone and then LIE about what happened so that Apple will fix their screw up for free.

For everyone else out there that don't work in a repairs department... you know, 99% of the owners... we don't care. When something goes wrong we usually don't fix it ourself. Isn't that the point of a warranty?

And why the BIG to-do over a screw driver? Someone will make the new one and it will be all over Ebay or come with your repair kits. It's not worth the trouble this will end up being blown into.

Anyone else think the girl in the video is kinda cute?

Anyways, I can see Apple wanting to protect their devices from people who don't know what the heck they're doing, what about people who do? I'm sure a lot of people here on MacRumors know how to replace memory, hard drives, etc. on a computer. But for those people who do know what they're doing would probably know how to get the appropriate screwdriver.

I guess it doesn't really matter on the iPhone 4 because you can't replace the screen yourself anyways but there are people who replace their batteries. Also, that would suck if they do it on the Mac. Say you have a broken water damaged MBP and you have nothing to lose while opening it up ... well now you can't.

I'm sure people are going to start making screw drivers for this screw if Apple continues with this.

If people make these screw drivers part of the standard, Apple will switch to new screws I bet...

Apple is good but wish they wouldn't "screw" people over like this.

I think the point is: When my phone is out of warranty, I would like the option to replace a part myself, instead of chuck it in the trash and run to the Apple store to buy a new phone.

And if i have broken my £500 phone with water damage - it would be super sweet if if could spend a tenner and cheat my way to get a new phone.

Yeah, those screws have been used in the UK marketing photos since the phone was announced. I always thought they were quite pretty myself. I'd just assumed Apple had used them for aesthetics.
But my UK IP4 still has the standard phillips screws. Are you saying they chose the prettier ones just for the promo shots?

Not evil but incredibly little of Apple. It will be no surprise when a chinese factory starts turning out screw drivers with this head and the very small amount of people get these drivers and continue tinkering with the devices they paid for. Did they really think this was gonna stop people for long? Again not an evil move, just a dumb one.

May I introduce you:

iFixit, Apple - Apple, iFixit.

I thought their response would be along the lines of "What took you so long?".

I dunno. I guess I see their point but I have a really really hard time caring.

I mean, someone will start selling this screwdriver next month on the internet, right? So the problem is we have to wait a month?

It's a problem, I guess, but it ranks slightly below "I need to remember to check my car tires for air pressure soon."

So, like, not something I'm gonna worry about for very long.

I don't get the big deal about this. As if any one of you running a multi-billion dollar enterprise wouldn't be looking to protect your products from unauthorized modification.

Doesn't mean nobody other than Apple will be able to disassemble but now I can cut down on external costs associated with having readily-open devices for sale.

I think the point is: When my phone is out of warranty, I would like the option to replace a part myself, instead of chuck it in the trash and run to the Apple store to buy a new phone.

I think the point is that you have to be pretty dim to get outraged about this; remember, the people who "broke" this are SELLING you something (and apparently at a not particularly high price.)

This is a point I could care less on. Want to get in? Buy a $10 custom screwdriver that mod sites will no doubt carry.

The important part is whether warranty terms change to me. The iPhone has remained constant, but over the past years, apple has actually allowed the hard drive to be user replaceable without voiding warranty. That's a step forward.

We will rail against Apple for its screw choice and say that the tools are not available and expensive BUT we will sell you one for $10.

Laughable

not only are they making it worse for the user they are putting more time and effort into having different screws which can negatively effect the device

This prevents a lot of illegal/unauthorized repairs from happening. ...

Illegal repairs??? WTF are you smoking?

Sure, maybe warranty-voiding repairs, but there's absolutely nothing "illegal" about fixing your own device. Making it physically impossible to fix your own phone (due to a proprietary screw, and no drivers on the market) should be illegal!

MadCow.

New US iPhone 4s use pentalobes too

I replaced my iPhone 4 exactly a week ago at an AT&T store and the new phone has the pentalobe screws. I didn't realize it until I read this article, and checked.

I'm not sure what the exact manufacture date of my iPhone is, but the AT&T clerk said they had just gotten them back in stock that morning, so my guess is it was made in Dec 2010 or even Jan 2011.

Pretty erotic video if you ask me, a hot babe talking about screwing with a skimpy t shirt with a screw driver on, pretty damn hot, epic fail no one's commented on that. As for the story... well pretty damn hot babe, although judging by how much she's invested on whether the screws are pentalube, quadrulub, with or without lube, I would think she isn't getting any proper screwing...and I am with her, apple's made it hard for her with the new unlikely screws, but I mean come on give it some time and someone will come with a screwdriver...oh wait these guys have already got one out and they are selling it. Happy screwing and unscrewing boys and gals!

edit: my bad, someone already commented on the hotness factor, good one.
