What you state is 100% valid by now, and for sure that at this time the market is small mainly because Apple hasn’t entered to the game yet.

I can predict that the changing trend that is coming is just comparable to when we abandoned physical keyboard devices in favor of all-screen smartphones, even although a lot of MR posters don’t like the foldable device idea by now.

Meh, it would need to price-comparable to a standard phone for it to be that mainstream, even if people did want them, which I'm not sure the majority does, from any manufacturer. The people I've asked about it are Android users..they are ones that don't want one, even after trying them out.

My maximum price for a phone is about $1200. I can easily afford more, but smartphones just aren't worth more than that for me. I can't see Apple releasing it in that price range.

It's fine for flip-phones to stick to being a high-end enthusiasts device. There is nothing wrong with that.

They are not original anymore
Honestly at least to me, it doesn’t matter if they are original or not.

Everybody knows that Apple is great perfecting concepts and technologies, as well as delivering excellent products, and that’s what counts to me.

I truly think we should give Apple the chance with the foldables and try them (the ones of us which like the concept), and if at the end we don’t like it, we will always have the chance to get back to our old and well-known slab phone.

where are those Apple "loyalists" who think foldables are waste of time?

It’s not going to fold. It’s going to scroll out like the patent leaked show, which means no thickness is added.

Regardless, foldable smart phones are a waste of time and the consumer market already decided that by rejecting the size, costs and bad durability.

Folding large tablet might work better, but still has durability problems.

if a screen has to fold, i would prefer a fine separation at the fold point rather than an actual flexing display (small gap between 2 screens). I just cannot see any material holding up to folding and unfolding thousands of times a week at a crease point. As a user of multi-monitor setups for many years a your brain will overlook a very small physical separation of the screens over time and if i am watching a video or something critically i probably would be doing it on a larger monitor anyway.

I know how they make this great.

Put the notch where the crease will be. 😄
Apple is still hawking 120Hz refresh and some other things as “Pro” features in a market where the competition has these in their mid-tier lineup or even low-tier.

That like Apple saying oh look we have CD optical drives in our infotainment system while the competition are using digital storage and streaming to do more.

it might be cool to get rid of the notch and island completely and put back a little non screen area at the top and bottom of the device to put the camera and sensors, but also use this space for nicer front firing stereo speakers. to me, an extra few millimeters of space for this plus better more direct sound (not bottom facing) is a win-win

Who wants this? Folding smartphones are nothing but a gimmick.
I do. And it's not a gimmick, it solves a very simple problem:

*It fits in pockets.*

I've got my 14 mini and I'm holding onto it for as long as possible because every other phone is way too big to 1) use one-handed, and 2) fit in the front pocket of my jeans and still sit down. I prefer a smaller phone, but Apple's smallest phone is still 25% larger than the 14 mini.

What solves the problem? Folding in half. Easy. Done.

Don’t you mean iPhone mini 12 or 13, there was no 14 mini. 😂

Not necessarily. I know a lot of people that use to buy the iPhone Pro series just because they want to show certain status. Believe me that a lot of people from outside USA perceive Apple products just as a way to demonstrate wealth to others even if they don’t explode all the functions and potential of the phone, so some people buys the top and more expensive product even if that means to get a big debt with its credit card.

Flip is a gimmick, Fold is great

Depends on what you want. I don't need or want a screen larger than my 16 Pro, but I would like it be smaller. A flip would cut the size in half when not using it, but still allow one-handed usage. I'd still prefer just a physically smaller (and lighter) device overall.

No one in the US really uses phones as a status anymore. Outside the US, the iPhone isn't dominant, except in areas where said phone status isn't really a thing (Canada, Japan, Denmark, UK, Sweden, Australia).
