No one in the US really uses phones as a status anymore. Outside the US, the iPhone isn't dominant, except in areas where said phone status isn't really a thing (Canada, Japan, Denmark, UK, Sweden, Australia).
You’re right, in US may not mean status anymore. The thing is that I live in Mexico City, so I’m sharing what I see of how acts middle class people, that keeps showing its status by owning the most expensive iPhone. And I know that this is the same in other countries (may be not USA).

So I’m sure that when Apple finally launches a foldable iPhone, they will sell by tons in Mexico.

Finally we are going to see the correct implementation of foldables. All attempts so far from other brands are clearly hit and hope and rush to the first.

I might just skip the whole 17 series and keep my 15 Pro until this iPhone flip/fold is released, its literally all I'm waiting for Apple to announce. The 17 Slim looks interesting though.

So, thicker device, worse battery performance, questionable how the magsafe dynamic would continue to work, and ultimately a surface likely more prone to dust/dirt collection.

I mean, by all means Apple, douse my objections, but this Hindenburg of a project seems to have a few flaws.

Because there’s loads of trade offs, bad displays not flagship specs, also a fold is better to give a bigger screen, to have a flip phone makes it thicker and no need for it, Apple failed with ai copying the competition and now with flip phones they want to copy Samsung. They are not original anymore
The upcoming Oppo folding phone looks set to be* thinner and lighter than the 16 Pro max, with a screen as good and a Snapdragon Elite processor which is comparable, and arguably better than the 16 Pro Max.

I'm sure they're working on a flip version too.

* We'll know for sure in about a week.

Will wait for this, and hope it can be a phone that can replace my mini.
If not, a Samsung will be my next phone.
Won't buy these big iPhone's Apple are doing these days - certainly not for me.

I originally didn't think there was a market for foldable either because of some of the reasons you mention. But judging by the just announced Oppo One (not sure about name), thickness doesn't appear to be an issue anymore - that phone is thinner when folded than the current iPhone 16 Pro Max. If Apple manages to have its foldable screen on the *outside* (or an additional one on the outside - but that, again, would increase thickness), then that would eliminate the only reason why I wouldn't want a foldable: the extra time/inconvenience of unfolding every time I want to waste some time on my phone - which is hundreds of times during the day.

I have what may be a dumb question: are current foldable displays really made of 'glass' or are they really made of plastic? Is it the amount of sand/limestone/soda/etc. vs. oil-based ingredients?

Actually waiting for this. Crazy Apple didn't replace mini series with a flip like this. Price is going to be crazy unfortunately
As a mini owner, it's not about pocket space, but the ability of (mostly) using it with one hand. A flip phone folding out to be bigger than a normal iphone is worse than a normal iphone in this regard. Easy pass.

How is having a device that has the ability to expand to a size closer to an iPad mini and still be able to fit in your pocket a gimmick? There are devices that can fold three times, so they can actually reach that size.
If Apple gives me a device that's a 6" phone at most, but preferably smaller, that folds out to the size of a small tablet with 4:3 screen ratio, has pencil support, and costs less than an iphone se + ipad mini cellular combined, then I'm in. But I guess I'll have to wait for this like forever.

What you state is 100% valid by now, and for sure that at this time the market is small mainly because Apple hasn’t entered to the game yet.

I can predict that the changing trend that is coming is just comparable to when we abandoned physical keyboard devices in favor of all-screen smartphones, even although a lot of MR posters don’t like the foldable device idea by now.
I think we are still quite a ways away from the majority of people wanting a folding phone. You need to make them as durable and waterproof as block phones (maybe more so as block phones continue to become more durable). They cost more and cost more to repair. The screens generally are not as good and have much shorter life spans. They are heavier and more unwieldy than block phones. All just to increase the screen size. Maybe if they can fix all that, they might have more appeal but until then, yeah they are just for enthusiasts.

Ditching magsafe would be a pro.
