Still can't get over how bulky and ugly this is. Really thought they would try to make it a bit sleeker before launch.

Why are they more obsessed about shaving millimetres off already thin phones and laptops when this thing would actually benefit from being more slimline

Last time I checked, you can't wear phones and laptops on your wrist.

----------

I'm with you on that... I already have $325 in Best Buy cards (work gives them to me for being good...) to go towards my :apple:Watch!

$335 in Apple giftcards in my Passbook, here. Can't wait!

You can wear a phone on your wrist. E.g. the Galaxy Gear S:

And a slew of GSM watch phones... even smart ones...

I see first generation as limited to the enthusiast, 2nd generation to a wider audience, with enhanced features, and 3rd generation to really be a necessary item.

It seems to be the way of things.

that wasnt the way of the ipod or the iphone or itunes. all were immediate successes. Despite the fact everyone is looking for the 'next big thing' after the smartphone, there is little momentum behind the smartwatch because there is really no general use or desire for it. Unlike other tech, it is not attractive or intriguing in anyway.

When I first saw an iphone, my reaction was "wow, thats cool". When I saw the apple watch presentation, my reaction was "wow, thats a total bomb"

----------

Those that are saying "it's just an extension of the phone" and "it doesn't do anything useful" remind me of the same type of statements before the iPod was released - "it's just an mp3 player".

the ipod was just an mp3 player. itunes was the revolutionary product

You seem overly confident. Look at the iPad naysayers back in 2010. Hard to argue with them at the time, but they were wrong. Embrace the possibility you could be, too.

Naysayers? I t would have been hard to argue with one because it would have been hard to find one. The ipad was an immediate hit. The smartwatch has bearly formed a ripple in the culture generally.

----------

Looks are subjective, and I'm not comparing the Apple Watch to other smart watches. From the pictures I have seen this far, I personally don't find the watch attractive, hence me saying that I need to see it person. I am not blown away by the pictures that have been posted and if this was any other company besides Apple, I think the response would be lukewarm at best.

Its the new 'New Coke'. People will ponder for years how Apple went so far off course.

The tablet PC hadn't taken off before iPad, despite being very old.

Most people I spoke to at the time said 'It's just a big iPod touch' the same way now people say 'what can it do that my phone can't?' about the Watch.

Plenty of people thought iPad would fail. Some of the naysayers I was referring to:

iPod touch camp' acknowledging there were plenty of people who felt underwhelmed by Apple's tablet: http://www.allaboutiphone.net/2010/02/just-a-big-ipod-touch/

I dunno, there have always been people predicting Apple's doom but since Steve Jobs' passing there's a new kind: people who used to like Apple, but are convinced it was a one-man show that's worse than Blackberry without him.

I wonder how much people are willing to pay for eBay markups during launch week? Watches are novelties for the most part, so I personally wouldn't pay more than MSRP. Anyone who pays higher than that for any product has patience issues or really needs a good justification to explain their willingness to pay a lot extra.

Here's from Walt Mossberg's review: a fairly vanilla tech critic

"For the past week or so, I have been testing a sleek, light, silver-and-black tablet computer called an iPad. After spending hours and hours with it, I believe this beautiful new touch-screen device from Apple has the potential to change portable computing profoundly, and to challenge the primacy of the laptop. It could even help, eventually, to propel the finger-driven, multitouch user interface ahead of the mouse-driven interface that has prevailed for decades."

I think the tenor of reviews was "yes, this is really cool--works great--do we need this?"

I feel the tenor of the watch reception: "blocky, ugly--what does it do?--do we need this?"

Okay, so let's wait for people to have the chance to spend 'hours and hours' with it, not just demo units.

After all, the people at Apple obviously have and they think it's worth releasing - even though it requires an iPhone.

They wouldn't have wanted the first post-Jobs product to be a flop. They must be sure it will be successful.

Funny how people are commenting on the design of the :apple:watch.

same thing was seen on the iPhone 6/6+ forums. Oh those fugly antenna bands, protuding camera and stuff. I know i was one of them that hated the pictures. Got served a big slice of humble pie when I received my iPhone 6.

its clearly better than whats out there, with more functionality. The bonus is it uses the same software as our iPhones/iPads. it just fits with your daily lifestyle and is a thousand times better and cheaper than the cheapest Genuine Analogue Rolex you can find. I like buying expensive watches for fun so this one is a must have. I was sold the day Tim unvield it. Cannot wait it to add to my collection!

Now, lets hear from the 80 perrcent of people who don't wear warches...

Walt Mossberg & David Pogue were groomed to promote Apple by Steve Jobs many years ago. Quietly receiving new products ahead of launch so immediately after, the glowing reviews were ready. A brilliant man Steve never missed a trick.

Once he passed Walt became even more motivated to keep the fire burning for Apple. Prior to being chosen by Steve, Walt had almost no knowledge of computers. Currently 67 he's the guy that influenced the senior citizens they could learn to use an iPhone and be cool like their adult children. A very clever strategy right from Steve Jobs himself.

I bet we'll see loads of senior citizens buying Apple Watches. That may be one of the key demographics.

All technology reviewers receive devices ahead of launches, Apple is not the only company that does this either.

You are kidding right? Have you seen the screen size? Also the watch is targeted to many demographics health & fitness, wealthy and influential and maybe your millennial who needs a reason to where a watch in the 21st century.

You're fantasizing, it's magic....

Wealthy don't bother with gadgets, influencers are too smart.

Yeah that's why rich people don't have smartphones, computers or any of that high tech stuff for the stupid and poor right?
