This has probably already been said a number of times elsewhere, but I continue to see 2048x1536 referred to as a "doubling" of the resolution.

And they're correct.

Display resolution refers to the number of pixels in each dimension, not the total pixel count.

That's why you use the two dimensions in describing it. "2048x1536", NOT the total count.

This should be basic math. The argument that both dimensions get doubled, hence the term 'doubled' makes no sense.

It makes perfect sense, which is why it's used that way.

It allows describing the screen so that anyone can visualize it. NO ONE uses the term to indicate number of pixels. The idea of using square roots or worse is just ridiculous.

If I say, "Apple just tripled the vertical resolution", you'd know instantly what I meant. Likewise, if I said just "tripled", you'd safely assume the resolution was tripled in both directions.
