also, i feel like with the addition of 2 cameras on this device, a better resolution seems pretty necessary. but hey, i could be wrong. though i hope i'm not.
Not when the camera (one of them anyway) is reported being a mere 1MP

what exactly does that have to do with the screen's resolution not being doubled?

stop for a second people...
tell me what advantages would the increased resolution give you?
absolute nothing.
Okay, maybe this is because I don't actually own an iPad and have only used those belonging to friends, but I really don't see a problem with the screen.
I don't see any pixels, and I find the screen great for surfing and all that. I just don't see how doubling the pixels would benefit me in any real way.
This is just me, and it's clear that not everyone (most) don't agree with me but that's been my experience. I'm more excited about processor/ram/built in usb/sd card reader upgrades than the screen.
Well thats sorted the arguments on MacRumors out for the next year
and everyone said not to bother with 1st gen
So far, the feature list for the new iPad is:
- 2 cameras, at least one of which is 1megapixel...score!
Happy with my 1st gen iPad - fast, light and without pointless video conferencing!
Plural of this: "these"I hope Apple will put an end to all those spec-ulations soon.![]()
You tell me, it was you who made the connection.
And .7mp is crap. This is 2011
Wow.
There I was scrolling the the comments with red wine in one hand and mouse in the thinking "man I would like that on the iPad 2 but maybe I can hold out for the iPad 3..." and BAM! I see your comment.
It is so true.
This really is a case of rumour hype that in the grand scheme of things really doesn't matter as much as it seems.
Double the res would be nice but how about double the GPU, RAM andCPU capabilities first eh? When the iPad came out so many reviews were saying "and the screen is so sharp and beautiful..."
Its been what... 50 weeks or something since those reviews... The current screen res is no big deal till at least 2012 surely? Don't get me wrong i'd take a retina iPad screen tmr but this feels desperate to me
If you want products that just jam in specs and features without making them ALL WORK TOGETHER to make the WHOLE product good, then don't buy Apple. Apple is not about cramming in the latest hardware and see if they can whip up some junk to make it appear to work. They take time to make sure the software is there to give you something clean and something that works well.
I mean really.... my GF's cell phone (which was once a claimed iPhone killer) is junk. Poorly executed. No updates. Horrible touch screen... but the spec list is sooooo cool. Also, look at the Playbook... probably one of the best competitors to the iPad coming, yet they are struggling to get the battery life up above 6 hours. Something has to support all the gadgets.
Again... as I always say... these are all just rumors. real info coming soon. I think iPad 2 will meet expectations or exceed them. Apple always seems to put a couple of "WOW" things in we didn't expect. Sometime some let downs, but still, overall the best product out there. Like the iPad 1.0. Not spec rich, but still the best on the market today and set the standard that everyone else in the market is trying to beat.
yeah i asked what that had to do with it not being doubled.
i'm saying i think the screen, supporting two cameras, should need a resolution increase. he said the camera, at least 1 anyway, is only 1mp, which i think has nothing to do with the screen resolution not needing to be/being increased.
The iPad screen is still the best tablet screen out there. Notice how all of these other copy cat tablets don't tell you if their screen is IPS and/or LED, both of which make a huge difference.
Double res or not it will be a great looking screen.
You probably think that Apple manufactures LCD screens. They do not. Whatever they use is also available in products from many other companies. The only well known case of screen exclusivity is SAMOLED screens available only on Samsung devices - but that's because Samsung is the one who manufactures them.
I'm a Macworld INSIDER member and have the last 6 years of their Magazine on my iPad (70 or so issues) -- they look terrific even on the current resolution. I have no problems with the current though I look forward to see what Apple does next year!If Apple wants us to read newspapers and magazines on the iPad they're really going to have to up the screen resolution.
Did you remind your relative that when the iPad came out there was no competition, and only now one whole year on are other manufacturers even attempting to bring similar products to market? Apple made the tablet market when others were too ignorant to see the need. I year ago many people were saying that netbooks would rule the world. They're not saying the same thing now are they? Sounds like your relative has a whole load of prejudices and ignorance swilling around..my advice ignore it.

I'm not waiting a whole year for an iPad 3 as other manufactures do not conform to some stupid once a year upgrade cycle and will surpass Apple long before then. They will get my money instead.
For ipad 2 getting it: digitimes articles and the ipad ibooks resolution increase found in the 4.3 beta version ( i think that's where that originated). this is the most convincing pieces of evidence in my point of view FOR the ipad 2 getting it. also, that engadget article talking about the device and its SD slot also pointed out that it would most likely have a doubled (or quadrupeled however you look at it) resolution.

If you can't tell the difference, your eyes need an upgrade.
I think you can pretty much depend upon the next iPad having an ARM9 core, however, it may be a single core rather than dual. The same is true for the SGX543, IMO dual is questionable. If I had to guess I'd say the best we might expect is a dual-core ARM9 derivative with a single-core SGX543. A dual-core SGX543 would be kind of a waste unless they plan on making a pretty big jump in the screen resolution (which I don't think will happen this year). The only other reason for a dual-core SGX543 might be support for 1080p video output, but that would require either DisplayPort or HDMI . Of course, Apple doesn't offer any 1080p content on the iTunes Store so support for full 1080p content may not happen either. One could claim that high-end gaming (on the iPad) could make use of a dual-core GPU but I suspect that a single-core SGX543 could handle most of what we'll see in 2011.I have a feeling there will be a lot of dissapointment when the iPad 2 is launched.
After initially hearing about the screen res doubling and an improved dual core A9 proc with dual core SGX543 graphics I was looking forward to upgrading from my 1st gen iPad.
having read more news items it looks like we might be getting an improved A4 processor which might still be an A8 and dual core SGX543 graphics with a couple of cameras thrown in for good luck.
Hope I'm wrong, but if I'm not I'll be giving the iPad 2 a miss.
