also, i feel like with the addition of 2 cameras on this device, a better resolution seems pretty necessary. but hey, i could be wrong. though i hope i'm not.

Not when the camera (one of them anyway) is reported being a mere 1MP

iPad2 will definately have double resolution.

I've not based this statement on anything but my hopes. Why not... i've got a 50-50 chance of being right. I like those odds ;)

Awwww sheeet. I'll buy the first gen. (maybe at a discounted price) than buy 3rd gen if this is the case.

what exactly does that have to do with the screen's resolution not being doubled? the ipod touch 4g, which i happen to own, has the retina display and a crappy .7 mp camera. it's actually not that bad of a camera to be honest. i love it for outdoor photos, but indoors it's fairly grainy with lower lighting.

now, again, i'm not saying the ipad 2 will get retina, but i think it will get the better resolution/resolution increase that's been rumored.

stop for a second people...

tell me what advantages would the increased resolution give you?

absolute nothing.

Okay, maybe this is because I don't actually own an iPad and have only used those belonging to friends, but I really don't see a problem with the screen.

I don't see any pixels, and I find the screen great for surfing and all that. I just don't see how doubling the pixels would benefit me in any real way.

This is just me, and it's clear that not everyone (most) don't agree with me but that's been my experience. I'm more excited about processor/ram/built in usb/sd card reader upgrades than the screen.

If you can't tell the difference, your eyes need an upgrade.

Well thats sorted the arguments on MacRumors out for the next year :D

and everyone said not to bother with 1st gen

So far, the feature list for the new iPad is:

- 2 cameras, at least one of which is 1megapixel...score!

Happy with my 1st gen iPad - fast, light and without pointless video conferencing!

I've been using that "pointless" "video conferencing" (most of us call it interacting with friends and relatives) for about 14 years now.

I hope Apple will put an end to all those spec-ulations soon. :)
Plural of this: "these"

Your point being? Plural of "that" is "those". What he typed.

I'm really disappointed about the screen res not being improved or doubled, but I didn't buy the first iPad because of the lack of a camera, and now the iPad 2 will have 2. So I'm ready to buy.

I'll sell #2 when #3 comes out just like the #1 to #2 people will do.

yeah i asked what that had to do with it not being doubled.

i'm saying i think the screen, supporting two cameras, should need a resolution increase. he said the camera, at least 1 anyway, is only 1mp, which i think has nothing to do with the screen resolution not needing to be/being increased.

and yes, you can say .7 mp is crap, which it is to tons of people. i thought so too right before i got my 4g touch, but after playing with it, and as much as i use my camera, which isn't too much to be honest, it's not that bad. it's fine with photos outside, they look great on my ipod screen. it's just something you get used to. but really, i would only use a camera on my ipad for facetime and games or some other apps that used the camera(s). there's no way i'm busting out my ipad to take photos of the grand canyon or the statue of liberty or some sporting event. get real, it's a tablet. it's not made to be a super portable camera. it is what it is.

You tell me, it was you who made the connection.

And .7mp is crap. This is 2011

I have a feeling there will be a lot of dissapointment when the iPad 2 is launched.

After initially hearing about the screen res doubling and an improved dual core A9 proc with dual core SGX543 graphics I was looking forward to upgrading from my 1st gen iPad.

having read more news items it looks like we might be getting an improved A4 processor which might still be an A8 and dual core SGX543 graphics with a couple of cameras thrown in for good luck.

Hope I'm wrong, but if I'm not I'll be giving the iPad 2 a miss.

Wow.

There I was scrolling the the comments with red wine in one hand and mouse in the thinking "man I would like that on the iPad 2 but maybe I can hold out for the iPad 3..." and BAM! I see your comment.

It is so true.

This really is a case of rumour hype that in the grand scheme of things really doesn't matter as much as it seems.

Double the res would be nice but how about double the GPU, RAM andCPU capabilities first eh? When the iPad came out so many reviews were saying "and the screen is so sharp and beautiful..."

Its been what... 50 weeks or something since those reviews... The current screen res is no big deal till at least 2012 surely? Don't get me wrong i'd take a retina iPad screen tmr but this feels desperate to me

The iPad screen is still the best tablet screen out there. Notice how all of these other copy cat tablets don't tell you if their screen is IPS and/or LED, both of which make a huge difference.

Double res or not it will be a great looking screen.

If you want products that just jam in specs and features without making them ALL WORK TOGETHER to make the WHOLE product good, then don't buy Apple. Apple is not about cramming in the latest hardware and see if they can whip up some junk to make it appear to work. They take time to make sure the software is there to give you something clean and something that works well.

I mean really.... my GF's cell phone (which was once a claimed iPhone killer) is junk. Poorly executed. No updates. Horrible touch screen... but the spec list is sooooo cool. Also, look at the Playbook... probably one of the best competitors to the iPad coming, yet they are struggling to get the battery life up above 6 hours. Something has to support all the gadgets.

Again... as I always say... these are all just rumors. real info coming soon. I think iPad 2 will meet expectations or exceed them. Apple always seems to put a couple of "WOW" things in we didn't expect. Sometime some let downs, but still, overall the best product out there. Like the iPad 1.0. Not spec rich, but still the best on the market today and set the standard that everyone else in the market is trying to beat.

I have a friend that has the iPad and he likes it/uses it all the time. I called him after he played with it for a week and spoke to him extensively about all the little ins and outs. I swear, we talked about it just so I could get some sort of satisfaction out of it. :) But, I decided to wait and observe. During my time in waiting, I see all these cool USEFUL apps come out. I also saw some gals give out free money to take a survey at my local mall, and it was all done on the iPad. I was stunned by the beauty and the ease of operation.

Anyway, you're right. I've ALWAYS said this about Apple products is that they WORK! I firmly believe if it wasn't for the iPhone, today's current smartphones would be no where they are today. And for the record, I 100% plan on getting an iPad2 this time around as soon as pre-orders open up.

Apple changed the game with digital music, then smartphones, and now tablet computers. :apple: So, just like the Steelers moving onto Super Bowl after a Jets smashing, "Can't Wait!" :D

The connection I'm making is that a camera with crappy resolution doesn't need a high resolution screen.

Now, why should the screen need higher resolution simply because there are two cameras? I don't understand how you're making that correlation.

Bottom line is that the closer we get to release, the less encouraging the news is becoming. It's looking a lot more like an iPad 1.5

You probably think that Apple manufactures LCD screens. They do not. Whatever they use is also available in products from many other companies. The only well known case of screen exclusivity is SAMOLED screens available only on Samsung devices - but that's because Samsung is the one who manufactures them.

While you may be correct, just because a display may be available to use, doesn't mean it's being used. If the iPad has the best screen, and that screen is available to everyone, but no one uses it, what good is that?

While I was hoping for the "retina" screen, them's the breaks. Still on point to pick iPad #2... We bought the first one and it goes to the wife, while the new becomes mine.

If Apple wants us to read newspapers and magazines on the iPad they're really going to have to up the screen resolution.
I'm a Macworld INSIDER member and have the last 6 years of their Magazine on my iPad (70 or so issues) -- they look terrific even on the current resolution. I have no problems with the current though I look forward to see what Apple does next year!

Disappointed

Was definitely going to buy an iPad if it had the doubled screen rez but will not if the screen rez is not upped. This will be a minor upgrade without the doubled screen. Looks like I won't be buying one this year-too bad.

Did you remind your relative that when the iPad came out there was no competition, and only now one whole year on are other manufacturers even attempting to bring similar products to market? Apple made the tablet market when others were too ignorant to see the need. I year ago many people were saying that netbooks would rule the world. They're not saying the same thing now are they? Sounds like your relative has a whole load of prejudices and ignorance swilling around..my advice ignore it.

As a matter of fact, I did. I reminded him that Apple is like the Nintendo of technology. I say that because Nintendo pioneers everything and then all the other gaming companies follow suit. So yes, Apple made digital music, smartphones, and now tablets relevant. The funny thing is that the same person bought a toshiba netbook but ended up bringing it back to get the Win7 update since the purchase was within 30 days and never re-bought back his netbook. I laughed at that one. haha. But dude is a Fandroid and hates everything Apple because of how Steve Jobs handles and "controls" Apples' products. Me, I couldn't care less as long as the thing works as designed, but I also don't like how Apple skimps out on their technology offerings.

Apple may not make but they have the cash and the demand to buy up everything of a quality level that comes off the production line. Which does impact on the ability of competitors to match as they need to find a different supplier or use the parts that didn't meet Apples standards.

I'm not waiting a whole year for an iPad 3 as other manufactures do not conform to some stupid once a year upgrade cycle and will surpass Apple long before then. They will get my money instead.

Huh? Most manufacturers use a one year product cycle. You ever hear of CES? It's this really cool annual show that . . . . oh, never mind.

For ipad 2 getting it: digitimes articles and the ipad ibooks resolution increase found in the 4.3 beta version ( i think that's where that originated). this is the most convincing pieces of evidence in my point of view FOR the ipad 2 getting it. also, that engadget article talking about the device and its SD slot also pointed out that it would most likely have a doubled (or quadrupeled however you look at it) resolution.

1.) Your first point of evidence is inconclusive. Images for the iPad (2) camera app were found in iOS 4.3 at 1024x768. If anything, both bits of information combined suggest more strongly that the next iPad will not have twice the resolution. Images found in iOS for future products have been accurate in the past (camera app with video toggle was discovered prior to the 3GS). It would be pointless to create a camera app at standard resolution if the iPad 2 has double the resolution.

2.) Engadget never said it would be double, just that it was "super high"

The iPhone 4 screen looks fantastic, but that video is extremely misleading. After showing a close up of the effect of more pixels, it zooms out to show the overall effect:

Untitled.png

The pixels on the "retina" 'a' are 17 times smaller the 'a' on the left. I guess 4x the pixels that are 2x as small = 8x the exaggeration?

iPad II killer feature is hopefully going to be the price, bring the lowend to $350 and Apple will sell more iPads than PC's worlwide. In one year iOS could become the dominant computer platform, all it takes is a price cut and maybe a 7" model with iPad resolution.

Since i held off on the iPad until the second version, if the 2.0 isn't a big improvement, i might just buy the first one to save some cash, then go the 3rd one next year.

Happy I bought first gen a soon A IT as available in UK. Have got great use from it. I'll happily wait for iPad3 to update because it is after all, an expensive luxury item. iPad 2 certainly won't have enough extras to justify updating except for those with spare cash to burn

I think you can pretty much depend upon the next iPad having an ARM9 core, however, it may be a single core rather than dual. The same is true for the SGX543, IMO dual is questionable. If I had to guess I'd say the best we might expect is a dual-core ARM9 derivative with a single-core SGX543. A dual-core SGX543 would be kind of a waste unless they plan on making a pretty big jump in the screen resolution (which I don't think will happen this year). The only other reason for a dual-core SGX543 might be support for 1080p video output, but that would require either DisplayPort or HDMI . Of course, Apple doesn't offer any 1080p content on the iTunes Store so support for full 1080p content may not happen either. One could claim that high-end gaming (on the iPad) could make use of a dual-core GPU but I suspect that a single-core SGX543 could handle most of what we'll see in 2011.

A combined dual-core ARM9 and multi-core SGX543 will probably happen in 2012, for both the iPad and the next generation Apple TV. That's when Apple could start to embrace 1080p content and a transition to a Retina-like display on the iPad.
