Apple is overtly teasing the start of "a new era" and the ability to "code new worlds" at WWDC this year, building anticipation around the widely expected announcement of its mixed-reality headset.

A tweet shared by Apple earlier today made the "new era" remark, seemingly leaning into the high expectations surrounding next week's WWDC keynote. The launch of a major new device and operating system, something that has not occurred since the debut of the original Apple Watch in September 2014, would certainly seem to justify the start of a new era for the company.

In a similar move, Apple yesterday published a blog post on the Apple Developer website titled "Code new worlds." The language may hint at developers' ability to create immersive augmented-reality and virtual-reality experiences for Apple's headset.

Neither the "new era" nor "code new worlds" phrases had been used until now, in what seems to be a ramping up of rhetoric around the upcoming keynote event. Apple CEO Tim Cook referred to the "beginning of a new era for iPhone" upon announcing the iPhone 12 in October 2020, but the company seldom makes such bold statements ahead of events, especially for WWDC. Earlier today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that he expects the keynote "to be one of Apple's longest ever and easily exceed two hours."

iPadOS was Apple's last new OS, and that came out in September of 2019.

I wonder what this thing will do. If they can’t make that clear at the event, the thing won’t be worth paying attention to.

If something could fool our eyes with a substitution for actual reality in a way that looks as real as real... and be paired with existing somethings that could fool our ears into thinking we are there too- anywhere at any point in time- that's 2 of 5 senses perhaps perceiving realities that the physical body containing those senses might not ever be able to actually experience... or cover the costs of actually experiencing... or fit into a busy life.

The great power of offering alternate realities to the "big 2" senses in a convincing way- that seems as real as reality- is a creative canvas for developers with endless possibilities. The services opportunities to sell "like being there" experiences far superior to watching through a 2D finite "window" (we call television) as we do now seem nearly endless as well.

Can mighty Apple deliver a device to make that possible in a few days? TBD... but I hope so. 6+ years in the making within an entity not cash or talent strapped like startups, and with a solid track record of "not being first, but does it the best" implies something good should be unveiled.

Coding New Worlds? I wish a new Xcode with some kind of AI copilot for everyone to be able to easily code their apps. Now that would be a new era. And I’m pretty sure that, sooner or later, it will be a reality.
