definitly NO GPS.

for two reasons:

1, google maps works by pulling geographical data from a server over the internet, GPS receivers have their built in maps.

if the iPhone had a GPS it would have built in maps, making google maps a lot less useful.

2 checkout the 4'th frame of the 24'th second of the calamari commercial, it shows TWO buttons "directions TO here" and directions FROM here"

Google Maps integrates with plenty of manufacturers "built-in" GPS, so your first point is inaccurate. As for your second point I don't see how that either proves or disproves your assertion. I for one, believe GPS may indeed be an unannounced feature of the iPhone. Looking at phones from Verizon, which i know for a fact have built in GPS b/c my family uses them, don't have any mention of it at the FCC site, so that basis is negated.

Tho Hole Ekstra Icon, again.

Hello Users,

I have now joined your beloved forums which I have been looking at for some time now.

I don't quite know if this is ekstra info, but I just wanted to play along. What I have found strange is that at the time that the man presses the iPod icon the icons above is first moving in one direction and then another. So it looks like to me that the small sequence where we get a close up of him pressing the iPod icon is not in row with the rest of the ad.

When he clicks the icon the "notes" icon is moving out to the right. But then, boom, we are back at the 11'th icon picture and the icon is moving to the left.

iPhone countdown widget?

I was wondering if anyone knows of an iPhone countdown wideget. I have one that looks like the phone but it's got the incorrect days on it.
 Sorry for the stupid post, but I really want one.

no no no

Hi

My guess is that because the prices listed are not subsidized, that you will pay those prices but you can only purchase an iPhone if you are a brand new customer who signs a 2-year service agreement or a customer in their upgrade qualifying period ( re-signing ) and re-signs a 2-year agreement. iPhones will not be available when signing a 1-year agreement or without any agreement.

Likely yes. You only qualify to upgrade a few months before your contract is about to end.

That's not how it works. (All of this is as per multiple cingular reps I've talked to and other who are on the network). If you sign a new 2 year agreement and you aren't with AT&T they GENERALLY give you a discount but it's been well documented that the iPhone will NOT be subsidized. Therefore ANYONE can buy an iPhone at 499/599 respectively. What happens is your contract becomes 2 years from the date you sign. If you want to pay full price for iPhone Rev 2/B/Whatever it's called then you just go in and buy 1 and you sign a NEW 2 year agreement. Generally speaking (with other phones) when you buy a new phone at full price you don't have to sign a new contract that's what makes the iPhone different - no matter if you're re-upping or just coming on to AT&T you sign the 2 year contract.

In Short - ANY cingular/at&t customer can buy an iPhone without fee and any person can join cingular/at&t and be able to buy the iPhone. EVERYONE will pay the same amount. Which is great for me because my company gets a 50% equipment discount :) yipee - Hello to a $300 8GB iPhone!!

Mystery icon.... LOTS OF POSSIBILITIES

The mystery icon is...(and remember :apple: use the word "REVOLUTIONARY" in reference to the iPhone and I think that means a lot more than what they have unveiled)

1) YouTube? (Well, maybe, but since they already announced that on the AppleTV that wouldn't be a big deal, and couldn't you access that via Safari on the iPhone anyway? Not Revolutionary, although I do think YouTube is cool and fun.)

2) GPS? (That would be GREAT! And that would be revolutionary. Can that fit into the iPhone case they are showing? I haven't a clue.)

3) Video iChat? (I think there is a camera hidden behind that screen, we saw something like that in an earlier patent release. That would be revolutionary! I know it sounds crazy, but go back over MacRumors archive and find that patent prior to touchscreen announcement and you may understand why I say this. From iPhone to iPhone, and iPhone to Mac. Pretty darn cool. Okay...a longshot, but I am hoping.)

4) Screen Sharing on your iPhone with you Mac & AppleTV? (Imagine being able to access your computer screen on your iPhone and run any app, view ANY movie, etc. That would be huge. Possible? Maybe. Leopard will allow iChat users to screen share. Why not iPhone. It would clear up a lot of memory questions. YouTube "magic" could be used to get all of your videos and TV shows to your iPhone.

5).Mac? (Steve has recently mentioned "making up for lost time with the .Mac community" and having some big plans for .Mac users. What could that spell for the iPhone. Anything? Nothing?

6) TV? (Will we be watching live television or TV with a slight delay via some Google/YouTube mystery application? I REALLY think this is a possibility. Google acquires YouTube for Billions, Google Teams up with Apple,...other phones are going to offer TV on a teeny-little screen. This seems very revolutionary and a good fit.)

7) Lightsaber? (As much as I would love to see it....no, I don't think this will be a secret feature.)

These are my best guesses.

Does anyone else find it strange that the answer(accept) key is on the right side of the phone instead of the left like EVERY other cell phone that has been made? Think different.

While what you say is true, the iPhone's interface for accepting and rejecting calls complies with the Mac System/Mac OS/Mac OS X Human Interface Guidelines... "Ok" on the right, "Cancel" on the left. "Think Different", indeed, but at least coherently with something else... ;)

Maybe so that it is closer to your thumb or index finger upon unlocking the slider for an incoming call when the iPhone is otherwise not in use?

Although I believe that the "ear-proximity" meter wound negate this idea and make the "accept call" button redundant anyway, unless you wanted to answer it in speaker mode (is there a speaker-phone mode? I forget?)

it'll be messed up if the secret icon was a "my account" button, to pay your att bill. but i hope apple wouldnt agree with doing something like that, although it would make it simple for people to check their phone accounts.

No thanks to ATT - iPhone will be cool

The reason the iPhone will change mobile computing is because AT&T has no part in it. AT&T & the other phone companies spent their existence sterilizing and denuding cellphones so they could charge $1 to download a wallpaper.

Apple changed everything because they will let you use your phone as an extension of your computer.

That's what I said...Or was trying to say...I think. If I understand it correctly, the only argument you are making is that you may not need to be in the qualified to upgrade period ( usually a few months before your contract term is ending ). You are saying that you think it will be where one can just choose to add 2 years to their existing contract and purchase an iPhone any time during their current contract?

It's because of a company like at&t [that decided to work so closely] that the iPhone can offer a feature like "visual voicemail." Visual voicemail is a network dependent feature as well as a phone dependent one.

how can the iPhone be used reliably if the map data has to come from a server ?

what happens when u loose your connection, and the map data is not in the cache ?

sure, the GPS can work with google maps, but google maps is not designed to be used as a navigation system in a car.

i agree that the presence of this second button does not prove the absence of the GPS, but it's an indication, just like the indications that this GPS rumor are based on.

it's easier to hit a button on the right side of the screen if u are holding the phone with your right hand, like most right handed users will do.

This is a wild guess but I would bet that the missing icon is youtube!

Bingo!

It may be a wild guess to you but you may well end up being right...

Take a glimpse at that article on David Pogue's blog:

http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/01/13/ultimate-iphone-faqs-list-part-2/

Shortly after the iPhone unveiling, John Markoff did a very interesting interview with Steve Jobs.

Discussing the need of having Flash on the iPhone, here's what the conversation lead to:

Markoff: “What about YouTube–”

Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec.”

Fast-forward to the D5 conference, where Jobs revealed that the :apple:tv will get access to Youtube content. Then it was confirmed by Apple that Youtube content would be indeed converted to h.264 (obviously from the original source video) to be displayed on the :apple:tv without using Flash, with a higher quality.

Combine this with hints from Google that they're planning to release other iPhone widgets, and you get a pretty high probability that there will be a Youtube iPhone widget in the near future, if not at launch.

My guess-

My guess is that the extra icon will be a Youtube button, being discussed right up there ^. This is because Apple has stated....I think..... that mobile TV on phones isnt needed and isnt wanted right now due to them being such a hassle. I think people would much rather watch short clips on youtube than whole tv shows while theyre walking around or sitting in a cafe. Theres no reason to have a whole length episode streamed to you phone, there just isnt time to do all that. Plus the interfaces probably suck (I wouldnt know, so if theyre great, sorry.)

:apple:

definitly NO GPS.

for two reasons:

1, google maps works by pulling geographical data from a server over the internet, GPS receivers have their built in maps.

2 checkout the 4'th frame of the 24'th second of the calamari commercial, it shows TWO buttons "directions TO here" and directions FROM here"

Almost all cell phones have GPS. Especially expensive ones! It's used to convey location for 911 phone calls. So yeah it's pretty basic but if google maps can pull the location from the built in GPS then it can be passed to google maps.

You could have posted the link that you got this idea from.

Nice to feel welcome. :)

Actually Darwen also did a great job of summarising the inconsistency here, on Macrumors.

For a device that we've been watching for so long, it's not surprising that so many people have picked up on it!

It seems to me that an iChat icon would be unlikely, as it would undercut SMS spend, etc.

I have been wondering for some time what happens to open apps when you hit the Home button. e.g. - is there a quick way to return to your last email screen, or otherwise without having to step back manually?

Perhaps this may be an option for 'Captain Hidden Button'?
