4 USB-C / thunderbolt ports is going to be an amazing thing to have in a year. Between the file transfer speed and being able to connect to 5K monitors and daisy chain perfireals ... this will change the workflows of professionals in a meaningful way. Nothing is future proof but this computers lifespan will increase. Only short term thinkers (and people who truly need > 16meg - blame intel) will complain.

You're absolutely right - USB-C is easily the way forward.

It just seems so odd to me that Apple are causing problems for their own customers and contradicting their own remarks.

Firstly, if you're going to tell us that the 3.5mm jack is obsolete, old technology, why then include it on the MacBook Pro?

Secondly, if you're going to release Lightning headphones, why not then have at least one lightning port on the MacBook Pro?

Considering every one of the billion iPhones that have been sold have a USB-A cable, why not just add a Lightning to USB-C cable in the MacBook Pro's box? Or, even better, why didn't they just design the iPhone 7 to use USB-C? Then you could charge the MacBook Pro from the iPhone charger and vice versa.

Hopefully in 3 weeks time i'll have ditched USB-A for my mobile devices forever. I've already upgraded all my cables to use USB-C in preparation and yes that's "upgraded" as now I can plug in all my devices either way round! That alone was worth the £20 it cost me in new cables.

Bye bye type A (apart from on the iMac of course, which never gets unplugged anyway) - you won't be missed.

Probably because a majority of the people who buy iPhones don't own a mac or a usbc capable device yet and anyone who is buying a $1,500 -$3,000 pc can easily afford to buy a $25 usbc to lighting cable and it would be silly to remove the headphone jack from a laptop this year especially since these macs where supposed to launch earlier this year before the iPhone 7 and there is no space contstraint. It really seems like they are pushing customers toward Bluetooth and not lighting headphones anyway

A. The 3.5mm jack on MBPs is used by audio professionals for more than just headphones. Unlike a phone.

B. Lightning headphones with the iPhone 7 come with a 3.5mm jack adapter included.

Exactly right.

My criticism isn't of the technology. And I've seen and had a go on a touch-bar-less-MBP in store. It's very impressive. It's the price.

And for this price, a USB A-C dongle should be included. Apple shouldn't be asking it's customers to pay to connect their existing Apple devices to their newest MBP.

The audio jack is used by audio engineers to connect equipment to, it's not just for headphone users. I do agree with you about a connector to lightning. Having said that I haven't connected my phone to my computer in a long time. I wonder if their plan with iPhone 8 is usbc. People will complain but they will finally have a world standard connection port on the iPhone. This would be a very good thing, assuming they include an adapoor for usba users.

The truth is, Apple probably will get a brief boost to MacBook Pro sales, simply because it is so long since the last upgrade.

However, in the long run, I expect this laptop to sell very poorly, and that its marketshare will shrink greatly.

So if Apple is advising its suppliers of strong sales, then it is a two-edged sword. Expect a fillip today, but a famine tomorrow.

Nice generalization of Chinese people. I trust you know all 1 billion+ that is why you can make such assumptions?
I've lived 10 years in Shenzhen and Shanghai and approx 90% of the macs I have seen ran Windows. Yes it's a generalization, but based on experience.
I was asked by a couple of my Chinese friends to setup windows on their macs too.
Part of the reason was / is that Chinese online banking security USB sticks have drivers for windows only and also popular Chinese programs like QQ did have a windows only version for a long time.

That's the other way round. That adapter doesn't allow you to use the Lightning headphone in the MacBook Pro.

One would think that you would have pallets of these new over priced MBP's in warehouse's around the US and maybe Europe? NOT have an announcement and then wait month's to get one of these. But hey that's just a thought.

Isn't there rumor chit chat or what ever you want to call it about new MacBooks and iMacs coming out soon? If and when that happens it'll be month or months before those hit the store.

Then it started updating without telling me it was.
Then I used a website and downloaded something that has locked all my files and is asking for ransom money.
Then they wiped my computer.
But I've still got my ps4 so thats ok! :)

Huh.....sounds like you don't know how to use a computer very well. You might want to get a Mac, they're much simpler.

I have a feeling the price increase went too far for European consumers, it's going hurt demand. Perhaps some will just get a lower spec Mac than they wanted to get the price down, but based on comments and polls here, more than 1/2 are planning to either keep using their old Macs or switch to a pc laptop.

You sir don't belong here because you are making too much sense.

Yeah, because there's only either "professionals" or Starbucks hipsters.. *sigh*

I, for one, am a "professional" (considering I'm using the MacBooks for running my company) and will most probably buy one of the new MacBook Pros, although I'm not happy with several choices Apple has made - it's still the most attractive option on the laptop market for me.

But keep simplifying.

People in this forum (and others) have a seriously twisted (or at least seriously lazy) idea of what "professional" means.

With my 3.5mm jack comment, I guess I was being flippant. I know why they included it - because it's absolutely everywhere. On every piece of pro audio equipment, every professional camera, broadcast monitors, VTR machines, in every TV studio, recording studio, radio studio, every domestic TV/radio, every walkie-talkie, it's in cars, aeroplanes, trains, it's on games consoles... it's everywhere!

Any computer that is worth anything needs the 3.5mm jack.

But by removing it from the phone, all the people that use headphones in all the above situations then need to swap to different headphones or fiddle about for the adaptor (assuming they haven't lost it).

I guess my point was that including it on the MBP is Apple admitting that the analogue jack is far from obsolete.

Apple explained that and dozens of people repeated it. They gave specific reasons for getting rid of the 3.5" jack on an iPhone. Amazingly, none of those really apply to the MacBook Pro. It's lazy oversimplifications like this that make tech stories hard to follow. "Oh yeah Apple simply said it was obsolete old technology"... While leaving out the numerous technical reasons. In fact, if they DID leave the jack out of the MBP, people would be crying that they lied about the reasons for removing it in the iPhone.
