These new MBP's are simply the best notebooks ever made. The cry out after the announcement by a vocal minority hardly represents the reality of the demand at large for a quality computer. Sure there are compromises. Every computer is a compromise. I think the market will show these are compromises in the right direction. I think Apple should add a 15 inch pro without a touch bar. Time will tell whether the touch bar is a good idea. It doesn't personally interest me but I haven't tried it. Neither has anyone else.

The USB-C to lightning cable isn't a dongle. It would just replace the USB-A to lightning cable. Also my iPad Pro charges faster with USB-C I already had the cable and power plug. Also for professionals that have 2 monitors and a docking station for their laptop , maybe if you would have bought the Mac Pro (as well as a laptop) then Apple would have updated it by now... my Mac Pro even 3 years later can run circles around the MacBook Pro.

I think that comes under the part where I mentioned dongles.

The point is, why have Apple released two products within weeks of each other than are not compatible nor are compatible with the same peripherals (without the use of dongles)?

Because in life you will rarely find perfection, especially at transition points. If Apple used USB C on the iPhone 7 people would endlessly whine about not being able to plug their phone into their existing Apple gear. Huge numbers would likely accuse Apple of being greedy to force people to buy a new laptop, as silly as that sounds.

If a tiny inline $4 adapter causes lots of grief and is a deal killer, there are plenty of other laptop manufacturers.

The performance should be great for all but the most difficult CPU tasks. Too bad there isn't a Mac Pro to handle those tasks. I see that as the real problem here.

This could be right, but I am a little worried about any new Macs now. My next Mac will probably be either an iMac or Mac Pro. I worry that there may not be another Mac Pro any time soon(or at all), and I worry that that the next iMac will be neutered like the new MBP.

I can picture Apple sacrificing performance and user upgradable RAM, just to make it even more thin. Who knows, maybe they will jack up the price too.

The hate for the new MBP is coming from the kind of people who spend time on sites like this and tend to have a much better knowledge of the products and what they want in them. To the general computer consumers the new MBP has a cool factor and will sell great, even with the high price tag.

Sounds appropriate for a fashion brand.

It's not just forums like MacRumors. The hate is coming from typically pro-Apple tech sites and bloggers.

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro that I use for work. I need ethernet, more USB ports than what comes with my laptop and the ability to connect, via TB2, to two monitors. I use a dock. It's really simple and while it is more of an expense, it's an easily justifiable one when you factor in how much easier it makes my life and how that helps me do my work better. In other words....it pays for itself.

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro on order and have two TB2 > TB3 dongles sitting here in my desk drawer. Should be a pretty seamless transition. Would I prefer a world with no dongles? Sure and I feel like Apple making this move pushes the market closer and closer to a world where that is the case with as versatile as TB3 can be. Some of the hand wringing over this has been a bit much. I'm not going to switch to Windows to bridge the gap. I'm definitely not going to spend marginally less to buy a 2015 MacBook Pro with 2 year old tech in it. So I buy my dongles, keep using my dock and carry on about my business.
It's going to be a great day when all this bickering stops. For $23, I can get what I need to connect (a couple small USB-C to USB-A adapters and a USB-C to HDMI). The price of the laptop is steep, but Apple's prices are always steep. They caused me to go out and look for a competitor, and while I did find a couple good options for less money, it wasn't so much less that it'd make me switch to Windows. I know the dongle thing sucks right now, but who didn't see this coming after the MacBook came out with only 1 USB-C port (not to mention the leaks of the MBP)? Those 4 ports can do way more than all the old ports combined, so for now we'll need a few dongles, but it will be easier in the near future to buy everything you need with USB-C, and I'd rather be forward thinking than wish I had more USB-C ports in a year or 2 and rarely use the legacy ports.

On a side note, find the thread about the original unibody MBP from late 2008 iirc. People were hating on that almost as much as this. I think that turned out ok. Always going to be people that are unhappy, but this seems like the natural progression of where things are going. Hopefully the prices will come down at some point, because that's my only real complaint given all the info I have.

The machine is good but not for a 'pro' user. Also is expensive.

I'm one of those haters. With that said, I don't fault Apple for going after people with more money than sense. Good for Apple, the problem is that as a pro user I have talked up Apple for a long time and now pros don't mean anything to Apple. So now, Apple does not mean anything to me, or my family, or the friends that I can influence. Simple quid pro quo.

That run MacOS?

Nope. As in life there are tradeoffs that one needs to make. In the case you present it would be using a $4 adapter vs. using a different OS on a different laptop.

If you're unhappy with Apple's decisions moving towards the future and the thought of using a $4 adapter to handle the transition phase causes one loads of grief, there's a solution at hand. Vote with your wallet. Buy from a different manufacturer, and find happiness.

Making a 15" function key Mac is not a good idea and it's not going to happen. TouchBar is like 3D Touch in the iPhone. Like it or not, use it or not, that's the path Apple is going down. The 15" is the premium Mac, they aren't going to do a budget flagship. You need to get on board, especially with your complete dismissal of others concerns over loss of features.

The MacBook I don't understand at all is the 13" with legacy function keys, and no other legacy features when they clearly could have in expensively added them on the left side. But I suppose it's no different than buying the iPhone SE as compared to the 6s. It's there to meet a price point in the new form factor once they discontinue the MacBook Air, and likely promote up selling of the TouchBar -- legacy ports likely would have cannibalized from that, as many users would have chosen legacy ports over an unknown interface they don't know if they need, just as you have expressed doubts. However, just as with the SE it perpetuates old technology that does nothing to encourage developers to create for the TouchBar. The big difference is that the 6s sold over 200 million units, which is a huge base for which to develop, regardless of how many legacy phones are sold. The new MB with TouchBar is likely to sell less than 15 million, so every little bit helps.

Rich casual users.
Its definitely not the upgrade that I wanted but I saw a video on youtube yesterday comparing the new MacBook pro to a pc that on paper kicked the macbook pros ass but due to the efficiency of Final Cut the MacBook kicked the PCS ass.
So as has been said before..its not just the hardware

Most of the nay-Sayers on Macrumors would disagree with this headline, But I think the Pro will do well, being a large majority have been waiting for a refresh. Myself included.

That's basically it.

It has its disadvantages, shortcomings and some strange choices, but for those of us waiting for a refresh for over a year, who use it everyday for work, it's the only logical upgrade. A PC in most creative fields is just not an option and this machine will do the job it's designed for. Mine arrives in December. Hoping the delivery gets pushed up, though.

With all due respect, if you can't afford a few cables with your 'profession' (after thousands on a laptop), then maybe you should get a new one?

The problem has never been about money, at least for me and my pro usage, it is all about memory, convenience, and performance. The display is too small, the memory is not upgradable, and the performance is lacking.

You can configure the 2.6 GHz model to match the 2.7 GHz model with upgraded graphics (460) and save US $100 (ex tax) and AU $170 (incl tax).

Apple charges $100 plus tax for a 100 MHz speed boost! The Intel recommended price for both chips is the same. Go figure.

Hell hath no fury like a pro user scorned. You'll shout it from the rooftops how Apple doesn't mean anything to you. That's how little Apple means to you now.

There goes any chance of Apple reversing course (ports, SD card reader, deeper key travel, bigger battery, etc) or lowering prices. Or could Apple be trolling :p
