In the MacBook Pro line launched this past October, Apple planned to introduce "higher capacity battery packs" that would have been terraced and shaped to the inside compartment of the computer, boosting battery life in the process. According to a person familiar with the creation of the MacBook, the battery failed a "key test,"...

I wonder if "failed a key test" means that the batteries caught fire/exploded.

That's why Apple has such a key focus on its ecosystem. For example, as frustrating as it has been for me to wait for an in home device that goes beyond Siri on our portable devices or ATV or now our desktops, I recognize that Apple could easily have put out a competitor to Alexa like Google did, but Apple knows that those are just gimmicks that are easily duplicated by any company. What I am sure they are working on, and I think we will see it in 2017, is a true breakthrough that integrates the next generation of Siri (Vocal IQ, etc.), HomeKit, and Apple's expertise in Wireless. It was silly clickbait from MG that "Apple has shutdown its router division." Yes, I get it that the only reason BI brought him on was to report on "leaks" from Apple, but it's nonsense to suggest that Apple is abandoning the home wireless environment when it's everything to Apple and only they have the hardware, software and services to make that breakthrough product.
Also Apple has bet on Apps and assistants that don't rely on building a dossier on everyone. It costs them money that competitors make by selling disturbing detail on their customers. And I'm not talking tin foil hat stuff. Check a recent article in the well respected Scientific American about google sister company building genetic profiles on everyone through knowing your family tree, medical history etc...

And why am I incorrect? There are millions computers and billions of devices aren't going to cease to exists after you received your Macbook Pro. How many device are now sold with USB-C after the macbook released almost one and a half year ago? iPhone is still USB-A...

Of course eventually it will be USB-C, but that will take years.

USB-C and USB-A is not exclusive, they could easily have added one USB-A port and saved the world from a million of new adapters and cables. But that doesn't line their pockets.
But a USB-C port can be a USB-A port (actually 5 of the USB 3.1 version of them); but a USB-A port cannot be a USB-C port, period. So, it makes exactly zero cents for Apple to cripple their overall design by adding a less-capable port, just because you can't be bothered to buy a cheapie adapter.

And since 99% of people that want to use a USB-A device will simply go on Amazon and buy one of the dozens of non-Apple choices, how in the blue-blazes does that "line their pockets"???

I think it's time for you to throw another layer of tinfoil on that hat, buddy!

I really want the latest hardware, but after watching my colleague use his 2016 mbp quite awkwardly because of the lack of ports, its got me requesting a 2015 for my hardware replacement. I need ports for my work and I don't want to have to plug piles of stuff in to make usb work.
Let's count the ports on the 2016 MacBook Pro:

- four power ports
- four video outputs capable of driving four simultaneous 4K displays or two 5K displays
- four daisy chainable USB 3.1 ports
- four daisy chainable FireWire ports
- four Ethernet ports
- four daisy chainable Thunderbolt 3 ports
- four ports that can drive VGA, Mini DisplayPort, or HDMI displays

I guess I find your "lack of ports" comment disingenuous. If you're plugging in piles of USB peripherals, you've already got a rats nest. One extra adapter won't make a bit of difference.

What, pray tell, is so "out of date", performance-wise, with the 2012 Mac Pro? It could use the USB-C/TB3 treatment, and perhaps the latest SSDs (which are bloody fast!; but those CPUs and GPUs are still plenty competitive, performance-wise.
It's going legacy soon.

Looks like apple may drop the MacBook and have the nrMBP as its replacement.
Then bring out a rMBP "Professional" unrushed, with all the features everyone hoped for.

How long do you suppose before it occurs to Tim and the rest of the Apple team that if the Mac dies off, there are no longer any machines for people to develop iOS apps on? All of a sudden their prized iPhone and iPad die off too.

We're well aware of that. But they've created a product that's worse than the previous generation in every possible way. No physical function keys, slower CPU, way less battery life, no legacy USB port, no SD card reader. The only thing they improved is the display. Everything else is worse.
CPU is not slower overall. The thermal management is enough better in the 2016 MBP over the 2015 model, that, even though it is about 8% slower, it is able to cruise along at that 8% slower for basically forever, whereas the 2015 CPU had to throttle back after just a few minutes.

The Touch Bar is lightyears-ahead of some stupid repurposed "Function Keys", most of which that have no real function as "F-Keys" in almost all macOS Applications. How anyone can not see that is beyond belief.

Way less battery life does not appear to be true, now that Apple has adjusted a few background processes. Typical new-OS-version issue.

No SD card reader: I was excited that my 2012 non-retina MBP has an SD card reader. I have used it exactly ONCE, and that was really just to make sure it worked. Everyone keeps calling it a "Pro" feature; but it is anything-but. True "Pro" cameras don't use SD cards, because they are too damned slow for RAW storage; SD is a CONSUMER-level camera storage medium. And considering you can get a nice USB-C multi-format card reader (much nicer than the built-in version) on Amazon for under $20, I really wouldn't sweat it.

And you also conveniently failed to mention the blazing-fast SSD. Not only faster than last-year's, but something like THREE TIMES faster than others in the industry.
[doublepost=1482262102][/doublepost]
So they admittedly made a product that even they themselves knew would be inferior ONLY so they could start selling it before the Christmas shopping rush.
Instead of having the team of engineers work on the new battery and come out a few months later.
Then they pride themselves on 17% thinner. Something NO MBP USER ever cared about or asked for. The "thinner is better" people simply went to MacBook Air.
Truly amazing.
There is no honor or integrity left at Apple. It's all money money money.
OUT WITH TIM COOK.........NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried one?

Curiously enough, those who do, mysteriously stop complaining...

The main problem has been the lack of regular updates, or updates that are underwhelming. The Mac mini and Mac Pro come to mind as prime examples of machines that look neglected. Not everything Apple does is going to please everyone, and note that I am not a hater and have gone against the grain here by purchasing a new macbook pro. Its not perfect, but I still like, am glad I bought it, and enjoy using it. A "macbook air pro" was exactly what I was looking for and Apple delivered, but I understand if folks wanted a heavier or bigger machine with a bigger battery or more ports, etc. Apple is going to produce what they think they can sell the most of at the highest margin, and apparently right now that is the macbook air pro.
Tech improvement cycles have slowed. So has Mac's refresh cycle. They have always been less focused on selling you cheap machines at a higher rate with faster obsolescence. You got far beyond an "air pro". They improved everything. Fastest SSDs in the industry, a fantastic display, incredible I/O ports, new CPUs and faster memory, efficiency, cooler running, quieter, improved graphics, and YES its thin and light enough to be as portable as the air model. Chances are, when you have to replace the battery in few years you will get the next-gen high capacity.

All these losers/haters can see is they can't plug in their obsolete peripherals and memory limit didn't go up, though its faster memory. I'm really starting to think this is the mindset that drove the Windows PC world into the zillion terahertz spec war race to the bottom quality with 45 min battery life.

"Why didn't they use desktop CPUs and make it thick with lots of obsolete ports? Whaa! Mindless Tim Cook thin courage rage."

And yes my camera uses SD cards and I have to hook up to every video port ever because of conference rooms. Its a non-problem.

Talks how a "USB-A" port somehow cripples the look and then attaches an ugly adapter... The USB-A port is no less able, it is used for virtually 99.99% of all USB device out there, there is no legacy about it.

So ****ing what if a USB-A port cannot be a USB-C, the simple fact that you need an adapter is ridiculous, in the old days Apple would have made an ad ridiculing windows doing that move. "Adapters, LOL, not here at Apple!".

Also the claim apple makes no money on their overpriced adapter/dongles is ridiculous, they cost pennies to make and they sell them for...

Jesus! Can you imagine if they'd released the MacBook Pro with Lightening instead of USB!? It's bad enough they haven't switched iPhones to USB-C. They should have made Lightening an open standard, USB-C might never have happened.

Spread the word. There is a reason Google changed its corporate motto from "Do no evil."

Apple puts 4 blazing fast current tech ports. They DON'T pull a note7 on the battery and all we hear in forums is "Whaaa! Why didn't they use desk top CPUs and make it thick with lots of obsolete ports?"

Actually, it's something like SIXTEEN USB 3.1 Ports, isn't it?

And as far as the FW and Ethernet Ports, are you SURE you can only have ONE per USB-C/TB3 Port?

I like to think of it as 80 Gbps of raw I/O bandwidth, which you can easily and relatively cheaply adapt to pretty much any other known I/O port. FAR more I/O than any other laptop, and probably more than almost all, if not all, desktops (certainly more an all off-the-shelf desktops).

Only when Apple says so, which they won't until there is a replacement.

You're just wrong. And it is WAY disingenuous to include the Lightning adapters in your picture, since NO mobile devices have more than one or two ports.

The trend is usually 7 years.

Open letter to Tim Cook and Apple employees:

We are the working Apple users. We work all the damn time. We want to do less work. We want our work to be easier to do. We want to spend time with our families. We want to volunteer in our communities. We want to make the world a better place. We don't look at our Macs and think about how slim and sexy they are. That's what you guys do. You guys, you Apple employees, you have a problem. You're so obsessed with how thin and light you can make a machine that you forgot to ask yourself if you even should.

We want our work done as fast as possible, and for mobile users we want it to be reasonably portable. We don't need a device that doubles as a guillotine blade. We want quality, we want battery life that lasts long enough to get work done and to power higher end components. We want Apple to listen to our mountain of feedback about how we do our work and what we need to be successful. We want Apple to stop focusing on making shiny toys for narcissists to show off how much money they have in the local coffee shop as they browse FaceBook on a $3000 machine. We don't need our Macs to come in a range of fruity colors. We don't want to carry around a fist full of adapters just to complete simple tasks like copying photos off of a card or showing a presentation on a projector or trying to plug in our iPhone. I mean come on, whose idea was that?

You poor people. I pity you. They work you like dogs until you quit. Your leadership has no idea what to do next. Is it a car? No, that fell apart. What about AR? That sounds like a neat buzzword. I feel for you, but you have to start fighting back. Apple must survive. For the sake of security. For the sake of privacy. For the sake of good design. For the sake of ease of use. Apple. Must. Survive. I can no longer try to help you. For years I've recommended your products. I've influenced many dozens of people to switch to using your products. I've stuck up for you. You are giving me little reason to fight for you any more. Only you guys can turn this around. I've been involved in the Apple community online for over 10 years and I've never seen the amount of negativity towards you that I see now. It is staggering.

Don't forget us and we won't forget you. Many of us depend on you for our livelihood.

Signed,
A. Duke

No. The ridiculous thing is this picture. All you need are some usb-c to usb-a cables. Its a standard so you don't have to buy Apple ones. Now you hook your old obsolescing peripherals up with those cables, clean and simple. Unless you are suggesting that Apple should have put all the connectors below on the machine? How did you survive when usb-a replaced serial ports?

And yes. My camera uses an SD card. Its a non-problem. And I have to hook to every video port ever because - conference rooms. They still use VGA DVI, HDMI, Component Video, Mini-Display, etc. I do not want all that crap on my laptop all the time. And I sometimes record old Vinyl onto my computer. But I don't want RCA stereo input either.

Up to 10 hours is amazing. You are just jaded and nitpicking. If not for MAC we'd still be in the zillion TeraHz performance spec war race to the bottom quality PC world with up to 45 minutes battery.
.

lol what? I love this computer.... I just find the battery a little short on power as do a massive amount of other users. Other then that I don't have any issues with this computer really.... I did at first because everyone in this forum is at each others necks (like you seem to be doing now) and skewing everyones opinions. But after using it for a few weeks its an incredible machine. A few bugs here and there but overall I do not regret the purchase.

EDIT : Just want to be clear that the UPTO 10 hrs is very very far off most of the time. I watch very carefully what I have open and the battery fluctuates quite wildly. Some days its a 12 hour machine and others its a 5 hr with just some browsing and restarting of safari to ensure I am always using the least amount of power. So yah there is a problem. Its just not a big one. When I do my music stuff It plummets pretty fast to around 2 - 3 hours max. Now this is slamming the machine for all its worth, so I understand why it gets that amount of time.

Power, referring to battery life right? Just clarifying.

It looks like the inevitable is happening.
Apple is a huge company with a huge number of employees, there are many product lines, there is no single genius dictator that can take decisions without dealing with the politics...its inevitable: you get slower, conservative, you get corporate.

It's no one's fault, and there's no way a public company of this size can avoid this fate.

Apple will likely keep selling billions of stuff for the next 40 years, it might even become bigger, but "that" Apple is invevitably over and we just have to accept it, it really is no one's fault and there's no way to avoid it: it's nature.

But it's time to face reality.

Specifically and less dramatically, honestly I'm not so sure that getting a mac is the best choice for my next music production setup.

I guess both? Lower CPU, screen dimmed a bit. So its using less battery by using less CPU
I'm confused. Are you saying the 2016 MBP is a step backwards in CPU and screen brightness? I ask because I know for a fact this is not the case.

Maybe I'm misreading, are you saying your usage involves dimming the screen?
