Someday I wish folks would lose the extraordinary concern over what is offered at base level and instead just buy what they need.

Sadly, I don't se that happening. As it would greatly reduce what one could perpetually be unhappy about. And of course one less thing to stick it to Apple.

I agree with @Andres Cantu & @sublunar earlier in the thread

I think they'll just keep selling the M2 Mini w/ 8GB RAM to hit price points on the low end, and ... you guessed it ... up the retail prices of the new M4 Mini's

Tim's playbook is predictable and all played out

Everything is basically always a price increase once you drill down into it

I just hope the base M4 chip Mac Mini will support HDMI 2.1 / 4K120hz.

For my use the base M series chips are enough but didnt like that that I needed the M2 Pro to get the HDMI 2.1 I need to drive my LG C2 OLED at 4k 120hz.

So the base model Mac Mini will have 16gb ram while the pro will comes with 32gb ram. Does that mean you can upgrade the Pro version of the Mac Mini to 64gb ram? If so, doesn’t that cross over into the Mac Studio territory?

Studio has MAX & ULTRA... more ports, front-side ports, better cooling system, etc... and is even better at making wallets "thinner & lighter." ;)

Or Apple could just say people are cooler (or liked more) if they own Studio vs. Mini. ;)

M4 mini for 499 EDU price will probably be the last traditional PC anyone will ever need or buy
I can’t decide if getting a modest laptop and a cheapest Mac mini / a souped up Mac mini / or a souped up laptop… have to see the price comparison- a separate Mac mini running automated specific tasks for me would be nice and not have to use the main machine…

16 GB of RAM to start across multiple Apple product lines?!?!? 😮🤯

Timmy must have gotten replaced by an alternate universe doppelgänger... this news is the clearest evidence I've seen for the existence of a multiverse... 🤔

(joking aside, I'm glad Apple is finally moving up the base RAM for the first time in over a decade)
We will need to see what this means for the base price of each product. Is Apple actually giving everybody an additional 8gb of ram for free, or is the price increase simply factored into the price tag already?

If the latter, it may not really be any different from the consumer simply speccing in additional ram at the time of purchase.

I really hope this doesn't happen, but I wouldn't bet against it.

It really makes my blood boil, Apple acting like a company on the financial ropes, as opposed to one worth trillions of dollars... It's unnecessary at this point, and just kind of gross.

I don't understand the comments worrying about the lack of Pro and Max. They've always released the base chip, Pro and Max, then, usually, Ultra, in that order.

Nov 2020 - M1
Oct 2021 - M1 Pro and Max
March 2022 - M1 Ultra

June 2022 - M2
January 2023 - M2 Pro and Max
June 2023 - M2 Ultra

October 2023 - M3
November 2023 - M3 Pro and Max
(no Ultra)

May 2024 - M4 iPads
October 2024? - M4 Macs

Sure the M4 was early for the iPads, so it seems like they've been around for a while, but we haven't had our round of base Macs yet. The Pro and Max are coming, just not first... like always.

Let's not jump to conclusions, the 16gm and 32 models could very well be the new Macbook Pros in Pro and Max Models, while the 8-core one is the Air.

It would depend on the "automated specific tasks" you need. If they are automated do they need to be done quickly? Or would a used M1 do just fine because taking 10 seconds instead of 3 is irrelevant?

The 2014 mini I'm listening to right now plays music just fine and has plenty of headroom to be my personal cloud server. The Music app is using 2% of CPU. On the other hand I would not be ripping a DVD on the 2014.
