I still don't get why people think Apple needs to or even should build a chatbot. I do not want to converse with my phone or computer; I want to tell it to do something and for it to just do the thing I told it to do.
That is just a short conversation. An LLM chat interface gives you more control over the request to Siri and let's Siri ask clarifying questions as well as answer. You don't have to use it as a cheap therapist.

We don't need a chatbot from apple.

We need better siri.

Example: I use warp terminal, which has AI built in. It'll do things like give you correct command syntax from english query, like "download audio only best format from youtube". The other day, I was trying to switch audio device through the terminal and failed. It jumped in and said "looks like you're trying to switch audio device and command failed b/c device couldn't be found. Let me run the command to list the devices... I see the problem. There's a trailing space in the device name. You didn't include it, here's the correct command." I would've been banging my head against the wall with that one.

Obviously, something like that would be much harder with a gui. But that's the sort of thing apple could do when they have complete control of the system and access to your data.
That sounds like a specialized chatbot

They should just creep the update into the Siri that we are using now and see how’s the outcome since the expectation will be low because it’s Siri. 😅

Waiting to see all the improvements Apple is planning on bringing to Siri/Apple Intelligence. Don't think it will happen all together. But really wish that in the near future it will be way better than how it is now.

Curious about the relationship between Apple Intelligence and iCloud. Amongst many things, will some features/functionality be limited to iCloud users? What about storage? Will we need to increase storage dramatically to account for things like LLM memory?

I’m happy for AI fans that they’ll get this before too long. Just as long as I can keep it turned off.
Totally the right attitude! But I will definitely want mine on.
You should go into politics. We need more people who can see both sides.

If Apple can pull this off… let’s face it, it’s the Siri we’ve all wanted and dreamt of since 2011.

Apple isn’t afraid to remove ports… limit software and in the past, make things so thin at the expense of practicality and take the heat for it, stubbornly.

So why so afraid to make an open AI like chatbot - locked down like Copilot and ChatGPT - just in case it comes out with something silly or arguably, harmful. Just build it, we know they can do a better job than the rest if they try… if it messes up from time to time, it’s not going to be the first time in the world it’s happened or an Apple only issue. But so far.. Siri being useless, is a long time known, much more frustrating ‘Apple specific issue’.

It makes a lot of sense for Apple not to do a chatbot, and "allow" others the privilege to waste monumental amounts of compute and not make money.

I see it as another option, an interactive podcast of sorts with any subject I'd like. It works no different than a phone call.

I’m not really sure why your age would have anything to do with it. My dad told me he uses Grok in his Tesla all the time, he's breaking 70.
Being able to research, web search, ask questions about things I don't know, ask for explanations to things while driving has been pretty great. Or even asking questions about the destination I'm going to has been amazing.

Their conversational abilities are amazing. I'm one who enjoys this in and out of the car.

Really hoping Apple doesn't push an LLM on us - lets us use the one we like.

To be clear, I think those things are very useful.

There's a difference between using it basically as "voice search", which is how'd I describe what you're doing ... and "talking to it on and on like it's a passenger in the car", which is my interpretation of what some folks say they are doing.

Perhaps I misinterpreted what folks were actually doing.

I certainly engage with things like "what time is the sunset tonight in Seattle?" or "what's the score of the Seahawks game?"

But I'm never going to be saying things like "hey Siri, how was your day and how do you feel about XYZ issues in the real world?"

The companion bots on Grok are really good - but I do not find a lot of value in socializing with an AI with my limited time here on earth, but yeah having an AI that I can hit with one button to ask questions - web search - spend my 30 min work commute learning about something I didn't know has been pretty good. (I don't usually do this if someone is in the car). So I hear you.

As AI gets better, I think more and more people are going to prefer talking to bots that are catered to them, but that's a whole other topic I guess.

I just can't believe how it's 2025, soon to be 2026 and Apple still is trying to get going with LLMs. Just let us use the LLM we already use (since we all have preferences) - I pay for one - let me use it and let me decide what it has access to. :p <sigh>.

Because it just feels natural. Just like when Apple switched from DOS to mouse, no need to learn how to use a tool, it should be intuitive. You get way better results with LLMs the better quality your input or question is.

Yeah I think you probably misinterpreted what I originally said or I misinterpreted in how I wrote it out. I don’t need (or want) to tell ChatGPT how my day was going and engage in casual conversation, I can call my husband or a friend for that. Maybe calling it a passenger in the car was a bit much, and I probably shouldn't have described it that way.

It's mainly bringing up a topic I have on my mind at the moment and learning more about it or thinking of a new recipe I can cook for dinner or whatever else. As I said, an interactive podcast of sorts. Even if I wanted to, I don’t think I can hold a conversation for more than 5-10 minutes with it.
