That is, of course, until someone tells you that the top part costs $500-$700, and so would the bottom part. Go ahead and tell me about the $500 i5 laptop you have, plus the iPad, and that it costs the same but has more power, blah blah blah.

Case closed.

No, I want a 17" MBP with a 17" iPad where the keyboard and trackpad would normally be. What you're posting about isn't close to what I want.

I'm always amused at the short sightedness of folks who seem to feel their "wants" and opinions reflect that of everyone else

No, this is not what I want
Nor do I want a gigantic screen on my iPhone :)

I'd prefer say $2 million, and for the Yankees to win the WS this year.

Thanks though.

This would be an expensive compromise. I guess it would be easier to just own a MBA and an iPad or simply decide which of the two is more useful to you.

If Apple would create this without it being a bad compromise then there certainly would be a market. I just can't see how this would be possible without it costing $3000. The main problem would be how to get the CPU power of a MBA into the tablet part of it.

Nah.

What i want is a decent monitor (27" plus) on my desk, that has inbuilt ethernet, wifi, airplay, etc - an inductive charging pad (no cables) and bluetooth mouse/keyboard/trackpad. Maybe an optional thunderbolt cable, to make use of gig-e - but if possible i'd like it to work via induction (read: magic) by just placing my tablet on the charging pad.

Get to work, sit tablet on pad, start typing at keyboard and view on the screen.

Leave work? Pick tablet up off charging pad, go home. Apps stay running. No cable plugging. No logging out, no shutting down, etc.

"Docking" is such a 1980s idea. Cables and dock connectors suck.

I think we will definitely see these at some point with some device. As for the 'topple over' argument, what do you think is on the MBPs today? : A heavy glass slab :D

So no, top heavy is easily fixed with a nice heavy counter balance battery and a drive or two.

I just don't see the downside.

Personaly, I would like this and also have a thunderbolt port that would turn
it into a second display (and power it), with the ability to share desktops, etc.

Combine these, and add a Wacom digitizer, and I will give my highly vaunted approval rating....maybe :roll eyes:

But this sort of thing takes risk, and I have yet to see anything.....

Yeah, well, we're not writing posts that claim to speak collectively for the readers at MR.
It might be that apple's working on it, but until they get it right I'm not interested in it.

The main problem with this post is that Apple creates products we dont know we want yet. ;)

EXACTLY....and most here posting negatively would want it once Apple says its the greatest thing since sliced....

Can you read any more BS into the intentions of the OP...and this goes for all of the others posting this way.

Never seen so many take a light-hearted post soooo personally.

I would just like iOS to be become a more capable/productive OS. I want a Document Repository that any app can pull from, just like the photos app we have now. I want to be able to snap two apps side by side. I want devs to stop making watered down versions of their desktop apps.

I bought a tablet to be a tablet. I didn't buy a tablet to be a laptop. I have a laptop to be a laptop.
Yeah! And I bought a phone to be a phone! I didn't buy a phone to be a camera or messaging device or Internet browser or to game on the go or to be a gps or to check my email or to video chat. I have a point&shoot, 2-way pager, computer, Gameboy, Garmin, laptop, and a Logitech camera for all that!

The point is, there's no downside to having the option, assuming it's done correctly and Apple-esque. Why only buy a MacBook Air when you can get an iPad with your purchase? Why only get an iPad when you can also get a MacBook Air with your purchase? If you could buy the two parts separately, what's the big deal?

I think people who are opposed to this don't have both devices. Seriously, there's no reason why this couldn't and shouldn't be done (from a consumer perspective, at least). It would be completely and utterly awesome.

Who's we? I don't want this.

And Tim Cook was pretty clear that Apple doesn't agree with laptop tablet convergence. To me it seems gimmicky. That's not Apple.

Tim Cook doesn't agree:

"anything can be forced to converge, but the problem is that products are about tradeoffs, and you begin to make tradeoffs to the point where what you have left doesn't please anyone. You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not gonna be pleasing to the user."

[MacBook Air] "appeals to someone that has different needs... you wouldn't want to compromise, you'll end up pleasing no one. The compromise of convergence — we're not going to that party. Others might from a defensive point, particularly, but we're going to play in both."

IMO it's gimmicky. It's something where someone sees a photoshop mockup and thinks 'cool!' but isn't thinking about how it would work from an engineering standpoint. Just like those mockups of the Microsoft Courier tablet that everyone was drooling over.
