What you just described is a desktop computer. It would probably be cheaper to just get a desktop then spring for a separate iPad. At least I could use one while using the other instead of losing my "screen" when I want to take the ipad out of the house/office.

So in other words the OP wants to gimp their computer by making it rely on an ipad for a screen.

Flash was needed maybe 6 years ago. Look to the future where we don't have to rely on a buggy bloated plugin to watch a video. Really, no site that relies on flash as their main interface is worth browsing nowadays. I don't need animated menu buttons and crappy music to get information.

If anyone can name some sites that are pure flash that they regularly browse, I'll tell them how irrelevant those sites are.

Umm, Youtube?! Duh! And I make money off Youtube, that is why.

YouTube can play html5 videos and play quite nicely on your iOS device without flash from your safari browser.

That is where you are half wrong. Any Youtube video which is monetized, cannot play back on an iOS device, unless you are using the standard Youtube app. Inside of Safari, they "will not" play. And, of course, added annotations will not show up in Safari either.

Lego still uses Flash on their site. They have a lot of it accessible with HTML, mobile and full sites are different, but there are online games and some sections of the site which require Flash.

Cartoon Network has a lot of Flash games that aren't available as iOS games.

So while its true that they could make iOS versions of all their content, they currently do not.

Since youtube is still in beta with the HTML5 interface, I'm sure this will be solved addressed soon enough, and like you mentioned, the youtube app can play them... but good point. It's not enough, IMHO, to force such a bloated platform onto an ios device. This sounds more like a tracking anomaly for "hits" on the mobile version of the site rather than the absolute need for flash.

Personally, I don't count flash games as "relevant". I'm not in the demographic I guess.

Surface! Yaaayyyy!

Yeah, ok, w/e. If it looks good to you, go for it. To me, it looks like MS "innovation". Nothing really special, save that maybe you can do serious work on it, though some have said that about the iPad. My take is, "Oh, look, lots of nice ports!", come on, Redmond, you can do better than that. Nearly everything is wireless these days, and if the user really needs ports, you should offer a wireless port hub. I look forward to the day Apple (or someone) gets wireless charging right and we can even ditch the dock port.

No, this is not Zune, it looks like a respectable effort. MS does not have this thing quite right, I think anyway, the question is whether it can survive to 3.1, which when they usually do get it right.

I think there is a small minority of people who would want that.

Also, I have always hated using laptops. They seemed cool back when I didn't have one. Then I got one and hated it. They're heavy, they're not easy to use in a train or plane seat, they get excruciatingly hot, and they're a pain to lug around in a laptop bag, especially when you're flying and having to get one through security.

I have always used laptops as a necessary evil and as a way to get things done and still be able to be with my family, not down in my dungeon where our tower lives.

When iPad 1 came out, I still had a laptop and took it on a family vacation. We were sitting at the gate waiting to get on a plane, and I saw a guy with an iPad (this was about a week after they came out and nobody had one yet). He was casually scrolling through his e mail, looking at Facebook, looking at photos, etc. I was standing there with my laptop bag hanging on my shoulder and turning bright green with envy.

That was my "AHA!" moment. A tablet is what I have been longing for this whole time. The iPad was the answer to my prayers. I wasn't storing anything on my laptop, and I wasn't using it for anything that required all that processor and RAM. I was just using it to fill out orders for work, surf the web, and check e mail.

I think a lot of people want to get away from the traditional laptop. Doesn't mean a hybrid wouldn't sell. But I really don't think a hybrid like this follows Apple's rules of simplicity. People want tablets now, not laptops.

I agree. I also can't stand laptops. In addition to the torments listed above, I'd add the cramped keyboard that makes typing an ordeal. The iPad keyboard is acceptable and doesn't try to be a full function physical keyboard.

Definitely a point made with the monetized aspect, but flash would only be a short term temporary solution. A solution that will be fixed without flash soon enough. It is just inevitable given Adobe is abandoning flash for mobile-tablet OS. This means solutions will be forced to integrate into either the standard Youtube App, updated HTML5, or both. It's coming.

Dual booting OS X is not going to happen. And personally I don't think it's really necessary. It would only take a few tweaks to make iOS a much more productive operating system. It's built on the same UNIX core after all.
