Now, I’ve deleted out the key string… but is that a key higher than 4096? And did you really encrypt 4 bytes of data with over 4096 bits? Hahaha.
It's actually just some random public key I created with an online key generator w/o any encrypted message. I think it was 4096. Then again, I don't even know if the site was legit or not lol.

and what's the sample group?
also, that graph makes no sense by listing percentages

i'd also query how more people can be using facetime than imessage, that makes little sense.

change the sample group to under 25s and bet discord would be higher than "8%", remove business users and "teams" would disappear off the list.
Yeah, I tend to be skeptical of polls too.

Funny, when the NSA wanted customer data from Apple before 2013 (PRISM program) they had no problems giving it to three letter agencies. When it isn’t the US government they suddenly develop a consciousness?

This is very concerning. I hope all the big tech companies form a giant collective fist and push back on these western authoritarian governments. Once there are back-doors built into our devices, privacy - which a human basic right - will die and never return. It’s also one of Apple’s core principles. Can’t believe this is happening. Go Apple!

Because of PRISM and how bad the surveillance got. Also, better late than never.
It’s not because “how bad“ it got. Apples problem was that their spying on customers got publicized and threatened the bottom line. Apple didn’t become a privacy advocate out of the goodness of their hearts. European and Asian customers didn’t like US companies spying on them on the US governments behalf.

Sure they would. Without a doubt.

we'll wait and see then won't we?
apple have threatened to do many things over the years regarding regional legalisation, and i can't think of any they've actually went ahead with.

money talks, and regardless of what anyone might say apples "core principles" are, at the end of they day it's about making money.

Maybe so, but the fact is that they still value privacy more than Google. No matter the reason why.

@OP

I don't think any of these politicians, regardless of the country they represent, understand that what goes around comes around. I mean, If you have a right to look at my stuff, I have the same right to look at your stuff. It's either private or it's not.

Exactly! We need far more transparency to what is actually happening.

the reason why privacy is the headline in every advert or announcement they make is to use as a marketing tool against google (and the likes ).

once privacy isn't the hot potato it is right now they'll drop it quicker than Ping

Feel free to reflexively assume the worst and make predictions. That's the culture here.

I choose not to play that game and take Apple's word until FIRST proven differently. Deleting those two services is not a biggie as other companies will need to do the same, or be accused in being in bed with the Government keeping similar services.

This is the most illiberal UK government we have ever endured. They break things, they lie, they remove our freedoms.

It is now illegal to protest in the UK now ffs. The majority of the press here enjoy lucrative government advertising contracts so are virtually nothing more than mouthpieces.

Illegal to protest?? Yeah right, I wish it was, at least then those Just Stop Oil morons would ACTUALLY get arrested.

Apple will cave eventually. Uk is a huge market they cannot lose.
You're missing an important point here: Apple has built its brand around privacy and security of late. This is the reason they backed down on the CSAM feature. Apple almost *never* backs down on features. They did this because they realized it would affect their image in this way and that would be a bigger hit.

The same is true here. If Apple doesn't stick to their guns they'll have a hole in their privacy and security marketing. To not pull these features would cause a bigger hit to their bottom line than losing a couple folks who use iPhones in the UK.

Also, disabling these features doesn't stop Apple from selling iPhones. They can keep the market and disable these features too.

Can you name any they backed away from? It’s easy to make a claim without anything to back it up.

can you name any they haven't?
it's easy to counter something without anything to back it up.

prove me wrong by giving examples.

see post 145 of something they backed down on. they wanted to go ahead with CSAM as i understand it, but backed down after the negative public reaction. money talks at the end of the day, their shareholders will make sure of that.

let's not forget, the EU are also thinking about this as well, as apple willing to discard 450 million potential customers on top of 70 million potential UK customers? whatsapp are voicing to the EU about it recently.

because apple never lie or stretch reality?
you need to take your head out the sand and read a bit more.

No. Because I don't reflexively join the crowd assuming the worst with everything Apple does.

That's fine if you do. I get it. Please continue on.

"you need to take your head out the sand "

Ad hominems such as that speak volumes.

Make sense. If there was a situation that threatened the security of the public, they would have the power to investigate the guilty parties.

Historically Apple has shown that they’re unwilling to co-operate with unlocking phones for authorities. Can you blame the government for wanting to side-step them?
The Brits never use any law in the spirit of what it was originally defined. They recently introduced a law to prevent people from gathering for any type of protest. Some lady was recently murdered and family & friends held a vigil. The Brit police went in with batons and tasers to break up a peaceful gathering for remembering a loved one. They're no different from when they used to brutalise conquered lands.
