Apple CEO Tim Cook to Attend White House for Kushner-Led Tech Summit

Apple CEO Tim Cook will visit the White House later this month for the first meeting of U.S. President Donald Trump's American Technology Council, a report revealed on Thursday. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella are also expected to be in attendance, but Facebook has not yet responded to its invitation to the event.

The meeting, which was formed as part of an effort to modernize government technology and digital services, will include a gathering of top executives followed by smaller sessions on specific topics, such as technology sales to government agencies and cloud computing, according to Bloomberg.

The council will be led by Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner and will be attended by government officials including the U.S. chief technology officer, said people with knowledge of the matter. Eleven companies have been invited to participate in the June 19 summit, .

The meeting comes just a few weeks after Cook and Nadella publicly criticized the Trump administration for its decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. Technology companies including Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook have also been critical of a proposed U.S. travel ban on passengers from majority-Muslim countries, with the companies being among 97 that filed a legal brief in February opposing the ban.

Trump held a roundtable discussion with tech executives in December, before his inauguration. The meeting focused on jobs, trade, immigration, and China relations. Afterwards, industry leaders said an area of broad agreement was the potential for the Trump administration to innovate in government services.

People on this forum who keep shouting "Tim should keep out of politics" forget that it's impossible with a company this big and this influencial to be completely unpolitical. And since trump himself keeps asking for his advice, I'm very proud of Tim that he uses the voice that he has to stand up for important issues such as the paris agreement or equality.

This group is not about climate change or equality. According to the Executive Order, the American Technology Council is designed to review and improve the Federal Government's use, implementation, and delivery of information technology and related services. From my work with the government and its agencies, any help Apple could provide to streamline things or make things more efficient would be welcome.

Regardless of his politics, Tim is doing the right thing by participating. A boycott would be completely stupid. Having a voice on the council means he can advocate for, among other things, the privacy issues that much of the tech community is concerned about.

In this case his participation isn't really political at all. It's a meeting to improve technology use in our government, and as he's the leader of one of the important tech companies of the USA, his participation is wholly appropriate for the interests of Apple and the country.

Tim Cook just isn't as passionate about the tech, I do think Apple is coming back a bit though with egpu support and Enterprise imac pro. For a while I was afraid they forgot that many 3d and film people used Macs.

Not attending would be silly. The sheer breath of subjects and Tim's clearly liberal position gives him a unique ability to shift government policies of the former Democrat we now have as President. Besides, Apple is a big business that could use more gov customers from every country.

I voted for the guy and am extremely happy with the proposed and already installed policies. Hey D readers, you may not be aware of this but Trump draped himself in the gay pride flag at one rally.
