I don't think every type of author should do it for obvious reasons but if the big news companies and writers for big news companies knew that their "certification" was at stake it would have an impact on the quality of writing. It would make sure companies got it right over getting it first or mislead the public with false information.

You are referring to private companies that are profit driven. Lawyers and accountants have a judiciary responsibility to not only the public, but the government. It’s an apples-and-oranges comparison. Again, the public has an equal responsibility to weed out the junk. For example, would you require such a licensing for writers of The National Enquirer, Gawker, TMZ, etc.?

So the didn’t buy Nest, missed out on Ring, but Apple picks up a magazine app?

Nest is worth nothing to Google, so wtf would it be worth to Apple. Apple usually doesn't do accessories, it just offers others the means to offer them like Homekit. There would be very little value to the ecosystem of buying either of those overpriced company.

With texture, Apple has bought the relationship with publishers and their clients and the good reputation of the app as they're moving into content. If you can't connect the dot on how all of this is useful and can be leveraged, I can't help you.

Texture will be a value added to their high end clients (those that usually read those mags) and will allow publishers to reach this end demographics. It will also allow to expand their media offering and possibly bundle it with Apple Music; a win for Apple.

I have a hard time seeing any value in Texture since I can get all the magazines I want via my local library. They have all the one I read regularly and easy to download to my iPad for offline reading.

This acquisition doesn’t seem to be about downloading magazines but gaining some sort of better access to the articles within them for integration in the Apple News app.

Seems like the great move by Apple to integrate Digital Magazine. Well, excited know to know how much they will charge for this Digital Magazine. Actually, I’m very happy with SnapChat’s Discovery to get everything about my favorite celebrities.

Yes, Apple Computer is a long-faded, irrelevant memory. Thanks Mr. Cook, you're killin' it...

Ahh, there's an ongoing need for Apple historians on this web. I am glad to play a small part. It wasn't Tim Cook, but rather Steve Jobs who at the Macworld Expo in 2007 who announced he/Apple was dropping "Computer" from their corporate name and renaming it as Apple, Inc., to be more reflective of the broad based consumer electronics nature of the company. His prescience about the future of strictly defined "computers" versus computing devices was what made him a great CEO; though for you purists who wish Apple had never introduced the iPod/iPhone, remember that Apple still sells tens of millions of Apple "computers," selling over 5 million in the last quarter alone.

What's Apple News?

I really seem to be the wrong target market for their news. I looked at it the first day it was around, and haven't touched it since. Oh well, AAPL hit a new all time high today. :)

Apple News hasn't garnered much attention from the media, but it has quietly grown to well over a hundred million users a month and is becoming a leading platform.

FWIW most public libraries offer free digital subs for many magazines through RBDigital/Zinio. Best thing is, if your local library doesn't offer a certain magazine you like it's possible a nearby one does and most libraries have reciprocal sharing agreements. I have library cards for a half dozen jurisdictions around me. Very convenient for traveling. Just load 'em up on your iPad or other tablet and go. (Might work on phones, never tried. Seems a bit painful.)

Heh. Sure it's irrelevant for non-productive people who just tweet all day. For people who actually do desk work, yes, PCs -- Mac OR Windows are required, graphics pros excepted perhaps. I'd adjust your post. Cook is just killing it -- that is, he's literally killing Apple's role as the preeminent tech leader. It's just a face among the crowd now. Love my iPad and iPhone but not giving up my Macs anytime soon.
I do used Zinio for Libraries and the magazines quality was really good, very nice quality and picture quality, after my Library migrated to RB Digital magazines with great photos like National Geographic cake with very subpar picture quality, are you seeing the same?

I agree that there is no need in the US to pay additionally for what we already get through the taxes we paid.
What app or service you use to get them? I get them through RB Digital and the image quality went down recently, not sure if this is by them, the actual magazine which I highly doubt or apple’s move to dimish the competition.

I use RB Digital also. Haven’t noticed any change in image quality. I often have to zoom in on many magazines due to the small type size.

While the libraries I'm registered with moved to the RB Digital app I have found that my Zinio and Zinio for Libraries apps (use on or the other depending on library system) still download magazines fine so I haven't bothered with the RB Digital app.

"The big news companies" and their writers already have high standards, and already have a codex they adhere to.

Did you actually just say that big news/media companies and their writers ALREADY HAVE HIGH STANDARDS?

I have a great ocean front lot 1020 feet right on the Pacific 2.3 acres total in beautiful Arizona and for you the price is only $40,000.
