Exactly, if it was really very unsafe, where are the horror stories rolling out of Japan?

Seriously, if anyone knows of any, I'd like to read up on them...
That's right, looking for six years of horror stories. Surely by now hundreds of thousands of Japanese and South Koreans must have gotten scammed.

Quite possibly the dumbest comment I've seen on this forum. And now for the history lesson.

Apple wasn't first with MP3 players.. but then came the iPod.
Apple wasn't first with cell phones... but then came the iPhone.

In both instances, all the pundits said Apple was way too late and would never be able to compete with existing providers of said technology.

Sorry to say this, but you grossly underestimate Apple's ability to compete at any stage of the game.

iPod is the only valid example here. Apple's market share in mobile phones is rather small. It's a little bit better for smart phones (especially in US) but even there this share stopped growing and is expected to start falling soon. Apple actually quite sucks when it comes to services (MobileMe, Ping, Apple TV etc.). There is absolutely no way that Apple will play any role in payment system.

You treat your phone like your wallet; don't lose it. If you lose either one, you'll end up calling a bunch of people to notify them of a lost card/"osaifu keitai" (literally "wallet phone").

The advantage here would be that since your payments are processed through iTunes (presumably), a single call or login to iTunes account could disable the payments from your mobile device. No more worries about what cards you had in your "wallet" and what numbers you need to call to notify them of theft. It is only a matter of time before the wallet meets its electronic replacement.

indications that it would start falling soon would be fairly shallow or shortsighted IMO.

Will there even be anything other than smartphones in 8-10 years?

Still looks like there is a ton of growth potential for smartphones. Up to apples future offerings whether or not it gets more or less of that growth than they do now

I'll be sure to bookmark this claim of yours and return to it a few years from now with a chuckle and a smile at the price of my shares of AAPL stock.

Apple isn't about market share, even Jobs says that. They are about the best possible user experience with great product offerings. Apple was raking in the cash during the recent economic recession, with record profits. That tells you what kind of brand loyalty they have.

Finally someone re-enforces what I wrote on page one. Listen folks, even if there is a security issue (which I somewhat doubt, at least nothing really that serious or nothing that couldn't be "fixed") that doesn't mean that NFC is useless or that it won't appear on the next iPhone. NFC is pretty much a done deal, so I don't know why people are arguing against its adaption by Apple. It's going to happen -- enough said!

I am not sure "brand loyalty" and "payment system" go with each other. Besides what exactly does Apple have to offer here? Special payment system for iPhone owners? Will Wal Mart go with this? Or will they go with some universal payment system supported by all wireless carriers? I think the answer is clear. Apple is just doing what everyone else is doing - adding NFC to their devices. Samsung has already done this (for Nexus S) and it is likely most new phones will be have it in the near future.

Not in my experience

Is NFC a common payment system in the USA?

I have seen NFC in other applications (example: authentication in a car sharing system), but not as a payment system.

Christian

I've never seen a NFC payment system here in the US. It's possible there are some around and I've never paid attention to them as I don't have a NFC-enabled payment device.

I have seen an ad in the past for NFC payment for gasoline and another for using a credit card. But nothing that I've actually seen or been offered the use of.

When it gets easy to make a transaction, it gets too easy to make the wrong one...

I have seen them in McDonald's restaurants across the country (it is the "safe" choice when traveling). If you really want to see one, they had the fastest rollout of NFC terminals of any business I've seen. Look for a large logo on the credit card terminal -- it looks similar to the Airport icon in the menu bar.

I believe that the iPhone 5 will get NFC so they could really grab a gigantic slice of the cellphone market in Japan and South Korea, where "feature" cellphones that use the FeliCa NFC payment system (and its South Korean equivalent) are very common. Adding NFC could seriously hurt cellphone makers in Japan, to say the least, since the lack of FeliCa support is why the iPhone isn't even more popular in Japan.

It is of my personal belief that Apple is quietly working with Visa, Inc., MasterCard Worldwide, American Express, Japan Credit Bureau (JCB), BC Card and China UnionPay to implement NFC payment systems on the iPhone 5, with added security well beyond the current FeliCa system to minimize the possibility of unauthorized payments.

1) Most of the posts here typify the need to use an extreme amount cautiousness when listening to customer concerns regarding new technologies and products.

2) Some posts referenced security concerns. Firstly, Apple recently hired a highly qualified security expert as its Director of Global Security. Secondly, such a system could be far more secure than cash, checks, or physical cards.

Is it the same thing as the PayPass thing on credit cards up here in Canada? Never used it even though all my credit cards have it. I'm not sure if it's even the same thing though.

Too late.

Visa are already rolling out an RFID based system in the UK and have been for over 2 years. No chance that Apple will be able to compete at this stage.

Funny the way Apple keeps doing things others have been doing for years.., like an mp3 player, a phone, a tablet (no one wants a tablet). They seem to go from one failure to another. :D Haha,

NFC for Apple is going to rock your world.

Chip cards are one thing, but the Shell and Esso Paypass is like RFID.

I use it always and it's awesome to do transactions in 10 seconds and be off on my way. The only problem is that when it catches on, you'll have a keychain loaded with stupid tag fob thingies.

Apple could fix micropayment and make it work properly and maybe be the biggest company in the world.

Japan has had some convenient pay system for subways and vending machines for almost 10 years - so Apple probably has gone to school on that.

NFC or RFID or whatever else comes into play is probably the biggest thing that will change our lives in the next 2 years I predict.
