That is e2e encryption that Google has the encryption keys to. Not what I would call security as that lets all of the US three letter agencies have complete and unfettered access. But dream on skulls of mush.
Why do some of you people insist on making stupid comments. The messages are E2EE meaning google does not have the security key to snoop into your messages no more than Apple has the key to open iMessage.

Why do I think there’s some hidden agenda behind this?

Google pays Apple another couple billion/year for iMessage on Pixel phones?

This may have something to do with oneplus making an iMessage app for their phones. better to have an Apple version than some other third party app.
How long do we think Apple is going to give it before they shut down this unauthorized hack?

Ars Technica has a pretty thorough breakdown of exactly how janky this Sunbird thing is:

The multitude of options have been available in the Android world for years and most users have not seemed to have much trouble utilizing them. Is there something about the average Apple user that you think makes them less capable than Android users?
did you just discover why plenty of apple users are not android users for years? I think so.

Well, for Apple, supporting or adopting RCS is better than having to open their Messages protocol to Google.
I just hope they include an option to disable it if it starts to cause trouble. The last thing I want is Google/Android Spam.
I was helping a client over the phone, she's using Android ad every time she tries to browse a website, other sites open and show ads.. so her phone has Adware. That doesn't happen on iOS/iPadOS.
alternatively, Apple messages on Google would be a far superior solution

Apple will require 1 paid plan for Android users if they don't have an Apple device to use it (so the cheapest would be the lowest tier iCloud storage).

RCS is so stupid. No thanks.

Get ready for "oh you're a green bubble? are you non-RCS green bubble or RCS green bubble?"

Or is it a new color? Brown bubble? Can you video chat with brown bubble people? Who knows. Imagine teaching your mom this.
As long as the user (me) has the option to turn it off it’s not a problem. I start getting spam and trash messages because of it, it will be one.

It will likely be green bubble, but instead of it saying "Text Message" in the screenshot down below, it will say something like "RCS Message".

And builds on top of it. Universal Profile does not have encryption built into that standard.

It’s a mess, but if Apple can push encryption to being part of the standard itself that’s a win.

However, governments all over the world (including the “free world”) will make sure this doesn’t happen. Too big a blow to their data vacuuming total surveillance machinery. Expect another FBI whining campaign imploring you to “think of the children”.
I don't know how Apple could push encryption in this case...at least not end to end. Someone's going to be unencrypting to pass off to the other service somewhere.

The blue vs green bubble was a good hook for the impressionable Yoots of this world. They had NO reason to cave in to RCS. I own both iOS and Android phones so I really don't care but iMessages was a good selling feature.

Google Pixel user here (I come in peace!)

After reading through page after page of these comments, I see 2 main groups of people. (and some trolls)

There are a lot of you that understand the technical benefits of this decision and are looking forward to a better messaging experience across the board. Then there are some of you who don't seem to know anything about RCS, or E2EE and are worried about your data going through Google's servers.

While both Apple and Google collect certain types of data on their users, I believe both companies care about the privacy of communication between people through messaging. Both companies have E2EE rolled into their platforms. (Googles RCS uses the Signal protocol). This announcement from Apple doesn't contain any technical information or elaborate much on how this is going to work. So rather than jumping to hysteria, lets all wait for more details. Apple coming into this is going to push the RCS standard further which is a good thing for everyone because SMS is archaic at this point. If you don't know what any of this means, I would encourage you to read the wiki page about RCS and learn about how E2EE protects your communications.

Really never expected Apple to cave on this, but I guess it should be an expected move since the EU was going to move to force iMessage to be supported on all platforms. This will give Apple a great way of arguing against it.

While I am happy about this news, but the timing is suspicious.

Later next year probably around iOS 18 updates, I can’t help by thinking lots of iPhone will be on chopping block. This Apple’s way to get people upgrade.
You could say this at pretty much any time though. Regardless I doubt the majority of users, especially those using models unsupported by the latest iOS, would upgrade a phone for this specifically.
