Apple is planning to bring new AI features to CarPlay, reports Bloomberg. Apple will allow third-party chatbot apps to integrate with CarPlay, so AI services like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT will be accessible in the car for the first time.

CarPlay already supports third-party apps, but the types of apps that are supported are limited. Companies like Anthropic and OpenAI aren't currently able to create CarPlay apps, so users are limited to using Siri voice controls in the vehicle.

With the change, CarPlay users will be able to access apps like ChatGPT to ask questions hands-free, though the apps won't be able to control vehicle or iPhone functions. Third-party AI voice apps will not be accessible via a wake word and won't replace Siri, so users will need to open an app to get access to a chatbot. App developers will be able to design in-car experiences that will launch a voice-based chat mode when the app is opened, which will streamline the process.

Apple is planning to support third-party AI apps "within the coming months," which could align with when the company's smarter version of Siri is set to launch. With iOS 26.4, Apple is debuting a more personalized version of Siri that uses large language models.

Siri will be able to answer complex questions, complete multi-step tasks, maintain continuity, and do more in and between apps. The personal assistant is also set to gain a World Knowledge Answers feature, allowing it to search the web and summarize information from websites.

Later in iOS 27, Siri will get full chatbot capabilities, allowing it to better compete with Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT.

If ‌Siri‌ will get full chatbot capabilities, why they are allowing these other ones since they can't control CarPlay or your iPhone?

The apps I want/need are Find My &/or Life360. I can then steer toward a loved one easily!
Others handy: GasBuddy, Network News apps, FaceTime (with a camera or cell), Google Earth, Facebook, Mail....

Is this news supposed to get me happy and excited? We have enough high-tech distractions in our autos these days, including safety sensors and features that can actually make driving more dangerous. Now we are supposed to embrace AI chatbots while we drive? I won't participate. I can hardly wait for the AI bubble to burst!!! I have been on this earth for a very long time, as I am probably older than most people who post here. I don't think I recall a product or service that has come out of nowhere so fast, that people are expected to immediately embrace, no questions asked, but at the same time has generated so much hostility from so many people.

All these chat bots will have a discussion in your car while you ask a question and drive to work. Who needs pundits when you have chat bots.

This particular sentiment has come up a few times for me this week amongst a wide variety of coworkers across multiple disciplines and the vast majority share a similiar view. It’s the pace, intensity, and breadth that is destabilizing. Undoubtedly there are positives but also a lot of concern/hostility.

Well of COURSE, Apple would allow those AI Slop Engines into CarPlay. What does Apple have that’s any kind of credible alternative?

disagree, I drive a family member's Tesla often and using grok in the car is a fun way to pass the time. I can ask it the history of the location I'm driving through, I can ask it to find things on the map, etc. it's very flexible and pleasant, I use it almost every drive.
Be sure to ask Grok what’s the best way to unlock the doors once you’ve crashed and the car is in a runaway lithium ion fire.

The upcoming Volvo EX60 is the first production vehicle to have Gemini built-in at launch. A feature they're touting is allowing it to access the vehicle's cameras and "answer questions / provide context about local surroundings based on the cameras' feed." Can we just not 😩

There are a lot of curmudgeons in here. Sometimes the situation is right for this, imo. I was on a long road trip a few weeks ago and wanted to find a car wash near my hotel that could wash off the salt. I asked Siri to find one with good reviews, that could do undercarriage washing, and how far out of my way would it be in minutes. I got the frustrating "I found this on the web for you" that I didn't want while driving. Gemini had no problem doing it entirely through a voice chat. I did have to trigger it via the action button on my phone, and it would be nice to do that through the CarPlay interface too.

For sure it can and will be abused too, which I hate. The normal traffic in Chicago is filled with people too cooked to put their damn phones down in heavy traffic. I just wanted to make a case for the lesser extreme too.

for what possible reason, I might ask?
are you bored while driving for long hours and you want to stay awake by talking to some soulless creepy mixture of a 1980s lawyer, 19th century philosopher, 21st century python coder and a bored housewife? oh, sorry, I left out the raging Minecraft-playing teen

You expressed my thoughts very well. Admittedly I find the short AI-generated animal videos on Facebook reels entertaining, and I have heard music generated with the help of AI that is actually very good. But overall, I think the whole AI thing is coming down on us like a runaway freight train, and it has the potential to disrupt many lives, and we don't even have an idea what the long-term ramifications are. And I don't think the proponents really do either, or they are not leveling with us. Plus the construction of resourse-consuming data centers all over country, increased electric bills, and the sudden price spikes in memory and storage that is going to make consumer grade laptops and other devices much more expensive. All I can say is that I am skeptical about all of it. I am an Engineer approching retirement, and all of this makes me glad I was born when I was, and I will be spared the worst of the disruptions that "AI" may cause.
