How about Apple letting you use your phone or iPad as a CarPlay device? I have an 1992 car I use my phone as a media device and would like to use it as CarPlay.

I have a dumb question. When I bought my 2017 “poor man’s” Subaru Impreza, it had carplay. It uses some sort of Subaru software on my phone to access carplay in the car. When I first used it in 2017, carplay blew. It was horrible but sort of kind of worked for mapping. Skip forward to 2026 and I’m able to use either google maps or apple maps, it has more software available to use such as podcasts, etc. How is that software on the car updated? Subaru hasn’t updated the radio/headset firmware. Is it through the Subaru Starlink app on my iphone? Is it simply through the ios on the iphone? I’m just curious because I really didn’t think carplay would work this long. The car is almost 9 years old now and has gone through 3 generations of iphones - SE, 12, 17.

This doesn’t feel great to me. Corporations keep pushing user-facing AI like chatbots on consumers without much thought while unfortunately, the more appropriate (IMO) use of it in non-user facing applications, like self-driving vehicle tech is not yet where it needs to be.

Giving drivers the option of mentally engaging in more things other than actually driving before the vehicle manufacturers are confident enough to take full responsibility with self-driving systems seems counterproductive at best, if not outright irresponsible.

Asking a digital assistant to navigate to a location, change cabin climate, seat heating/cooling, bring up some settings screen so you are not hunting for it, or turn on your home AC while on your way home is one thing. Engaging in a “conversation” is a different animal IMHO.

Get off your high horse!
There are others in the vehicle many times also.
Not in the US. And even when there are, how many accidents have been caused by fighting kids?

The good news is there will lots of funny videos of different AIs giving contradictory directions, AI instructions inducing people to drive into lakes, AI instructions insisting the wheat field is really a road or insisting the road is really a wheat field and so on.

CarPlay software functionality/updates are included in the iOS operating system. New iOS versions sometimes get new CarPlay functionality that you can use in your same old car.

Nothing dumb about that question. Others will know more, but my basic understanding is that the CarPlay software is on your iPhone and just gets displayed to your car using Bluetooth. So your CarPlay can be updated by updating your iPhone

If ‌Siri‌ will get full chatbot capabilities, why they are allowing these other ones since they can't control CarPlay or your iPhone?

Shouldn't we be applauding Apple for being open to competition?

Is this news supposed to get me happy and excited? ... I won't participate. I can hardly wait for the AI bubble to burst!!!

Nobody is forcing you to install the relevant apps. These won't be automatically built into iOS or CarPlay, only supported once installed. That's a good thing.

AI won't be going away. It's here to stay.

Now drivers can ask for the proper way to use signal lights and roundabouts.

Drives me balloony how ignorant and selfish drivers are. How hard is it to flick your finger to tell others (drivers, cyclists and pedestrians!) your next intended move?

I just asked ChatGPT... "should signal lights be used when changing lanes while driving?"

And it responded with common sense...

"Yes, signal lights should always be used when changing lanes while driving. Using turn signals is essential for alerting other drivers of your intentions, which enhances safety on the road. It helps prevent accidents by ensuring that other motorists are aware of your movements. Proper signaling is part of defensive driving practices and is required by law in many places. Always remember to signal well in advance of your lane change to give others enough time to react."

Is this news supposed to get me happy and excited? We have enough high-tech distractions in our autos these days, including safety sensors and features that can actually make driving more dangerous. Now we are supposed to embrace AI chatbots while we drive? I won't participate. I can hardly wait for the AI bubble to burst!!! I have been on this earth for a very long time, as I am probably older than most people who post here. I don't think I recall a product or service that has come out of nowhere so fast, that people are expected to immediately embrace, no questions asked, but at the same time has generated so much hostility from so many people.
I remember the very first iPhone generating lots of hostility & fear. Anything that’s new & transformative will get that reaction. People in general hate change, even when it’s for the better… 🤷

Please, allow me to force my garage door app into CarPlay. I’m tired of using my watch.
Genuinely curious: is there something the app provides that a traditional garage door remote or (possibly) buttons built into the vehicle does not?

Well the iPhone turned out to be somewhat distrastrous for our society in ways nobody saw coming. The people who make AI are actually outright telling us it's going to be disastrous and it's very difficult to see how it won't be.

I have a 19 Outback. Not an expert on the prior models, but in my experience, you can use your home WiFi or your iPhone as a hotspot to complete OTA Subaru updates for the infotainment system. That being said, as far as CarPlay goes, that is all iOS. If you really want to amp it up a notch, you could use a wireless CarPlay adapter like the one below. My model year doesn’t support wireless CarPlay natively, so I bought one of these and it’s great.
