The iPhone 4 jump to double the resolution was easy, since it has the same hardware as the iPad and the iPad has an even higher resolution. But you can't double the resolution so easily from the iPad, since that would result in a screen with more pixels then about 90% of all computers. And as you all know, you can't play many games smoothly at that resolution on any sort of average DESKTOP hardware.

For the games that it would be an issue, code it to run in a compatibility mode of 1024 X 768. There, problem solved.

I'm having trouble seeing how they can do a resolution of between the current 1024 X 768 and 2048 X 1536 given the bitmap nature of iOS.

Anything in between will require interpolation of existing apps or that existing apps run in some letterbox format, either of which are not palatable solutions. Sure they could do these types of solution, but it would not have the elegance of the iPhone 4 solution of quadrupling the pixels and running existing apps in a near transparent compatibility mode.

Why not only doulbing each pixel so the 4 pixels in a group get replaced by 9.
1536 X 1152. That way they don't need to interpolate each pixel only say the the middle one in each group and maybe switching which direction each pixel stretches each refresh.

Or they wait till iPad3 and makes sure they get resolution independence finally working in the next releases of both mac OS and iOS.

As long as it's released by April I'll be happy as I'll have the money to buy one then ;)

I'd be happy with beefier rendering hardware to enable more complexity in games along with a speed boost for processor (A4 v2?), oh, and double the RAM :)

As far as resolution is concerned... Although a higher res is always nice, frame rate, raw polygon pushing power and smoothness has always been more important to me...

Looking forward to the announcement whenever it is :)

I like the iPad, iPod and iPhone developments, but I would really like to know when the new MacBooks are released I am still expecting April, but that could be to enthousiastic, or not?

I would have thought the most likely introduction date was the iOS roadmap event which is normally early April. They could move it earlier but that throw out their stated aim to get yearly timetables for the product families.

Still that timing still works for you as long as you like queues.

If you can shoot video with that back camera, this computer might be the most awesome hobby video machine ever made. Take note and watch. Such a display is great for filming, controlling the shoot, and then editing. AND you can post it right from the pad. Brilliant.

1280x1024 sounds do-able.

I'll go with this as a general/probable boost to the coming resolution.
It WON'T be anywhere near "retina" but it will be more than the 1024x768 whatever that is on this pad. A 1400x1100 would be incredible, but I doubt it will get that high for another couple years, if then.

With 1280+ width I feel the iPad comes closer to something like a functioning desktop on the go. Once the iPad has the ability to be autonomous (or linked to a desktop if desired) it will be keen and a must-have for many people. It will become a computer for the masses due to price and portability and function.

I don't see Apple going with a non exponential resolution. All old apps would be blurry. I think they will wait until the iPad 3 to up the resolution, and make it twice that of the existing one.

Agreed. In the mean time, 512 MB RAM and dual cameras, (possibly an A4 chip Mk II ) will be enough of an upgrade for iPad 2.

I'm thrilled, I was hoping that the iPad would get a retina display and, did think Apple would want to do this -- hopefully this turns out to be true.

A "retina" 2048x1536 (264 PPI) resolution on the iPad would be just amazing, especially for games!

TBH, more RAM would be better for games. More pixels to drive will make the damn thing slower, and it's already slower after iOS 4.

Superficial nonsense.

wake up call to jonathan ive

if that thing on the photo is the new ipad 2, then it is boring. didn't apple have such design 10 years ago after the "cherry" phase?

however, i have to admit that i liked the cherry design back then (to some extend). apples design is cool, but i get the feeling that everyone has the same mac book now. there is no diversity, no personality anymore in the design. it starts to get boring ;-(

wish they'd wake up and start inventing a second design line of products, one that is not boring silver and glossy black display glass all over...

If you are implying that a 320x480 image on an iPhone 4 will look worse than on a 3GS, you are wrong. You are right that it will have to stretch on the iPhone 4, as you say above; but since the iPhone 4's screen is 4x denser, a 4 pixel area will be the same size as what one pixel was on the 3GS, and thus look identical -- the iPhone 4 however, can look even clearer with an image designed for its resolution.

But that is the point! IT IS STRETCHED! Apple chose to use the extra pixels to increase the density while maintaining the same visual dimensions of UI elements and therefore everything is stretched unless made a higher resolution to fit the screen with the 4x pixel depth! So if you understand what I am saying you'd see I am right! You are also correct in saying what you are saying, but it is not implemented that way on the iPhone so it is not true in the case of the Retina Display!

im guessing that the ipad is on a yearly update cycle. Since it was originally released in the end of march/the beginning of april im guessing that they will announce it somewhere around that time.

if it was originally introduced in the end of january doesnt mean they will announce it every year in january. (remember the iphone it was originally announced in the winter but released only in june).

plus it doesnt make much sense announcing a new ipad just a month after so many people got there's for the holidays recently.

again im saying somewhere in march/april (maybe february but not the beginning of february more like the end/middle).

The predictions make sense to me

Just comparing the iPad to the iPhone 4, you can see they have to at least catch up with it's features if they want us to be getting both. That means a perceivably similar screen resolution (I'm banking on 1280x960 as a minimum, though hoping for more), the two cameras (proving wrong all those who said they were unnecessary) and a more ergonomic design. Then we have the proposed Android tablets to contend with, that have to at least be matched, bringing a requisite power jump to 512-1GB RAM and dual core processors. The gyroscope and possibly some other exotic features would round it out. In fact the only thing I think they won't give it is more ports, such as USB/SDXC/HDMI, etc.

At this point, as with consoles, even if they don't make much on the hardware, they'll have enormous earnings through iTunes sales, especially the Apps. If they don't advance the hardware, they'll end up losing a lot of sales to Android tablets, especially since the latter, messily though it may be, advances their hardware so much more frequently.

For myself, I don't want to wait until iPad 3 to get in on the game. I really hope they make something attractive to a tech-head this time. With all the competition building around them, I tend to think they will.

Lol yeah you're probably right, although I don't remember having a problem Pre-ordering a first gen iPad when they were released so im hoping the same for iPad 2.... Well, that's what I'm hoping ;)

The timeframe is right. My predictions:

(1) Dual-Cameras - this seems definite. FaceTime is coming.

(2) iMovie for iPad - since it will be able to record HD video, Apple should be preparing the iMovie iOS app for the iPad. This will have more features than the phone, but less than the desktop app (similar to iWorks levels of features).

(3) Flat back - makes sense since that way it can sit on a flat surface better.

(4) Display - will not be doubled like the iphone, but I can see a slightly higher resolution. 1280x960 would look great and not tax the GPU or alter the battery life significantly.

(5) A5 or improved A4. I don't think it will be a dual core chip yet. Apple likes battery life over performance.

(6) RAM 512mb.

(7) Battery Life will be about the same.

(8) 3G version, both Verizon and ATT.

(9) iOS 4.3 - FaceTime, and a new magazine service as shown with "The Daily." What I really want is to be able to send a group an email, but sadly I don't think that is coming.

seems very possible. agree with u on most points

What about the Web?

100% of Websites are made with a width of 1024 maximum, are they going to upscale and get blurry graphics on this so called retina display?

Or are they going to be seen as on a maximized desktop browser and look small with background side frames?

None or them are good solutions of the resolution increase...

Well, the issue with a 1280x1024 resolution is that it's a different aspect ratio than 1024x768. iPad currently is 4:3 and 1280x1024 is 5:4. If you wanted to have 1280, you'd have to go with 1280×960 to be 4:3. And the aspect ratio change would have issues with legacy app support.

There is a large catalog of apps already coded for 1024 X 768, and will look like poop when they are interpolated up. Also, interpolation would reduce battery, to what amount I don't know but I would think it would be more than insignificant.

One of the best things about iOS is the small amount of fragmentation, and this would add it and hamper future jumps of resolution in the future.

Seems credible to me...

1) This doesn't "step" on the Verizon iPhone because that is just the iP4 on another carrier. Either you've been waiting for it or don't care, or will wait for an updated Verizon iPhone later this summer.

2) Just as Apple somewhat accelerated announcement and release of the iP4 to get ahead of the competition it probably wants to repeat w/ the iPad 2. iPad 2 needs to be released before Android Honeycomb tabs ship.

3) OS X 10.7 is due this summer. Apple is not going to want to launch two OSes on top of each other. Devs need time to tweek, Apple needs time to market. That crunches the announcement calendar even more so than usual.

So my guess: iPad 2 announcement in early Feb w/ release in early March, iOS 5 preview in mid-March, iP5 announcement in mid May w/ release in early June. WWDC '11 in mid Jul to early Aug.

Yeah, but I wasn't going to try and calculate the extrapolated resolution. People get the idea. Circa resolution and generalities, just to say a greater boost of resolution but not some terrific retina-level resolution.

no no no

Apple will NOT release the next gen in less than twelve months of the original. It's commercial suicide, completely out of pattern for Apple. Is Kevin Rose ever right? I've yet to see a decent prediction come true that came from him first...

I hope it will have HD video, but somehow Apple is quite able to disappoint.

iMovie + HD video camera + HD video editing + iPad = consumer win.

A February 1st launch announcement for the iPad 2 would seem weird since it would detract from the supposed February 3rd availability of the Verizon iPhone. Given the hype and anticipation, I don't think Apple would lose anything putting off the iPad 2 announcement for the week after, which would make more sense. Plus, it'd allow them to boast about their Verizon iPhone sales.

Don't think it would add distraction - it would only add to the Apple Hype and the stock will go even closer to $400

Then you should also remember that they were not available until a few months later. It was announced early because it was a new product and developers needed time to create new ipad apps. That is no longer the case with the iPad2.

Expect an announcement no earlier than march.

GL

Depending on new features, developers still might need time to adjust/add. If they really increase resolution (and probably not doubling), developers need time to adjust. Maybe the new big unknown feature is coming .... They probably can cherry pick some developers (as say do sometimes) for early access - but for sure they don't want to introduce the new iPad like - "Ok, here is the new iPad with those fantastic magical features, but sorry, you have to wait some more weeks for apps to support this"
