Nobody can design like Apple can ...

I am on the fence with the iPad 2. Whatever its specs, if its nothing enticing enough I can wait till version 3. I already have an iPod Touch 3.0, don't really see myself upgrading to another iPod Touch 5Gen or maybe an iPad 2Gen or 3Gen.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to go with the same pixels per inch as the iPhone; exact pixel doubling (2048 x 1536) makes much more sense. Since the iPad is usually held further away than the iPhone, larger pixels could still achieve the same angular resolution. But you're right, it will take much more compute power to handle that kind of display; I wouldn't be surprised if we saw either double-speed processors, or two processors, or a little of both, and definitely a vamped up graphics chip.
Please include a GPS chip. Some of us do not care for A/GPS. :D

iPad 2 will have the label Retina Display and will either have the resolution of the MBAir 1366x768 or 1440x900. My bet in on 1440x900. A standard 15" screen resolution on a 9.7" iPad display is what will be released. Marketing the 9.7" iPad display as supporting the resolution of a standard 15" laptop display.

That actually sounds like something apple would say...

But- what about the idea that programmers will be complaining about not having thing doubled so they will have to rewrite their code for the different aspect ratio of the new display resolution?

I feel :apple: should incorporate Resolution Independent in iOS. This is the very reason why it needs it. Hopefully iOS 5.0.

it will be Verizon iPad CDMI/WiFi + iPad 4G/WiFi with 3G compatible, iPad Wi-Fi only line will be dropped, you heard it here first! New iPhone 5 released this summer for all telcos around the world incl. verizon.

Why would they drop the one that probably sells the best? Makes no sense.

1. Apple is not going to stop using 'Retina Display' and it's only a matter of time before the retina display makes it to the iPad. It would be pointless to stop using that term because everyone knows exactly what I mean I use that term. If you want to stop using that term, feel free to.

People use the term often in regards to the iPad and rarely define it. When they do define it they usually means a doubling of the resolution, IOW 4x as many pixels.

This is silly and still does not give it the same PPI as the iPhone 4 since it’s starting from a much lower PPI than the previous iPhones. It also fails to explain which Imagination Technology GPU would be used to render 3,145,728 pixels that won’t kill the battery or make game play impossible. Note the current iPad pushes 786,432 pixels with a PowerVR SGX 535 and the iPhone 4 with the “Retina Display” pushes less than at only 614,400 pixels with the same GPU.

Going 5x as many pixels as the iPhone 4 doesn’t seem feasible to me yet this is what is often referred to when people say "Retina Display" and don’t think they need to define it. Believe me, this marketing term needs to be defined.

All the speculation aside, one thing that is for sure, we're a year down the road with lots of feedback from iPhone, iPad, and iPod customers. iPad 2.0 should be an awesome upgrade and competitor against all the announced but yet to ship tablets out there.

One thing not to forget that Apple has to bring to the table... the iOS and the eco system around all Apple products. This is their advantage and I'm sure, beyond upgrading the hardware, we'll see some amazing software developments too.`

I agree and if Apple can somehow achieve that resolution with iPad2 - I'm skeptical - I think this will put Apple ahead of competition by miles again. Not only this will guarantee excellent compatibility with the first iPad, the new applications will look so much sharper and better that it'll be hard to look at other tablets just like when you go from the iPhone 4 screen to 3GS. After all, the most important aspects of a tablet is its screen and the responsiveness.

Having said all that, I highly doubt Apple can find someone to make such high-res screen cheap enough to be fitted into a $500 tablet.

AirPlay. Was discussing yesterday the troubling logistics of how this could be used for an SDK and apps for the AppleTV.

I think that is coming since they included 16GB NAND on each even though the margins seem pretty thin already and even the new MBAs store SL and iLife on an 8GB NAND USB restore drive.

Apple has been using that 30-pin Dock Connector for 8(?) years now. They offer both component and VGA out. I can see an HDMI option once 1080p is possible. What I can’t see is Apple adding HDMI to an iDevice.

I personally would like to see HDMI because I would like to use an iPad for presentations on location. Almost every conference room I walk into has at least one large HD TV, and currently I am using a PC with HDMI out for presentations. I could use the ipad, but the resolution is not the same on an HD set. If I can just bring an iPad, plug in and go... I will never look back. That's just me, but I can't be alone in that.

If the only features mentioned are the display and cameras, I wonder if that means we will not see a dual core iPad. Seems silly to me not to offer a dual core version.

Why stop at dual core? Apple should at least be trying quad core now, right? Cant be that hard can it? Oh, and dual desktop GPU's HAVE to be in there, and 2x Retina display obviously. Absolutely must have 12MP cameras front and back because those fascinating pictures of my mums new car really need to be in ULTRA high definition. 80 day battery life is an undisputed MUST HAVE, and it should have the ability to wirelessly connect with anything I want it to, just by me telepathically willing it to do so.. COME ON APPLE, I AM SICK AND TIRED OF YOU NOT BEING ABLE TO MAKE EVERYTHING I HAPPEN TO THINK ABOUT.

How about this… AppleTV with AirPlay so you can be untethered for your presentations.

Okay, I’m not completely serious, but imagine if Apple turns the AppleTV into the cheapest and easiest way to stream Keynote, PowerPoint and other documents over AirPlay.

True, but an AppleTV + iPad combo will be even better since you can control the presentation anywhere without being tethered. Also the AppleTV should be small enough to be carried everywhere.

You are joking ... anything less than 16 core is just not acceptable. Also 12MP camera is pretty lame and so technology from yesterday. You also forgot to mention that it has to be thin as paper. If Apple does not do this, Google/Android will eat them for breakfast.

I agree that it would be superior from a functionality standpoint, but in practicality... it's a pain. That's why I'm carrying a PC for these things. I don't want to, but I do because I can plug in and launch quickly with a single self contained package and almost no setup. I work in a government office and iPad's are becoming standard issue because of their usefulness for following/annotating agendas, etc... but we are all still using PC's for presentation because of this. HDMI would be a perfect solution for us anyway. Just throwing my own experience out there for whatever it's worth.

As a filmmaker the ability to check footage on the go on a high resolution portable display is a necessity, however the only way to do this is to have an hdmi out on the ipad. The least they can do is add their mini displayport technology on it.

Another great solution, in the event apple doesn't have an hdmi out in ipad 2, I will go buy a Notion Ink Adam. They currently have the best tablet in the market.

You're simply wrong. The Apple TV is where your hdmi connection lies, and iPhone iPad iPod are your REMOTES. It would not be in any way better to have the iPad physically tethered to anything.

I've only used Facetime a few times on my Iphone, so a slightly better retina display won't have me updating. I would update if Apple ever released a 7" Version, or at least add a second Ipad.

How do you sync your high resolution footage on the go with the iPad (or any other tablet)? Do you use the iPad/Tablet for editing on the go? How much (or little) high resolution footage can you fit on the iPad/Tablet?

Well then the developers can't just double the resolution of their apps as they did with the iPhone 4, not gonna happen, too much effort on the devs part.

Why?

Wouldn't it be Apple's job to announce the next Apple product?

I hope Apple makes vast improvements to the hardware, the current 256mb RAM is pretty ridiculous, my Evo has more memory. A dual core CPU and 512mb RAM should be the absolute minimum, 1 gig would be preferable considering it has to be competitive with various Android tablets for at least a year.

Yeah, the iPod has the "horse power" for the retina display...

.. but the iPad can't?

That is just marketing, so in a year they can offer the iPad 3 "with retina display". Still the iPod and iPhone hast it even they are smaller devices. Pure BS.

Thank you, pmz. I appreciate your opinion, but I do not believe I am wrong, I just apparently have different requirements than you. That doesn't make me, or those like me wrong for having specific needs. I walk into a room, sit a table a few feet from and HDTV, and have a very brief period of time. Quickly plugging my device into their TV is something they understand and appreciate, carrying in and hooking up something like an apple tv box is likely going to quickly get to me off on the wrong foot. I am not saying it's right, but I am saying with absolutely certainty that it is true.

iPhones, iPads, iPhones, iPhones, iPads…

What happened to OS X and Mac desktops?
iPads & iPhones define Apple Consumer Electronics Co. One must remember the core function of either a desktop or laptop is work. Yes many use them for games etc, yet one can also play games on the iPhone and iPac. The two devices that Apple has centered it's resources & attention on.

Instead of raising the bar with some new technology in the laptop space, Apple has chosen to dumb down their computers via the Mac App Store. Thereby saving the new users from having to educate themselves. Just open your wallet, click, and presto you too can be a genius.

You click, my stock goes up. That's my stake in the Mac app store
