As of this week, Apple will begin shipping repaired iPhone 12 models in a new brown box that is 100% plastic free and created with bleach-free paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, according to a company memo obtained by MacRumors. Until now, all repaired iPhones shipped by Apple were packaged in a white box.

In the memo, Apple said it is trialing the new packaging for repaired iPhones as part of the company's commitment to eliminate plastics in all packaging by 2025. In April, Apple announced that it had reduced plastic in its packaging by 75% since 2015, and said that plastics accounted for just 4% of the company's packaging in 2021.

The eco-friendly packaging will be used for repaired iPhone 12 models shipped from Apple Repair Center depots to Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, and/or directly to customers in the United States and other countries.

Apple did not indicate whether it would expand the more eco-friendly packaging to all repaired iPhones if the trial is deemed successful.

Apple previously announced that its global operations have been carbon free since 2020, and the company said it has used 100% renewable energy to power its offices, stores, and data centers since 2018. As of March 2022, Apple said 213 of its manufacturing partners have also committed to 100% renewable electricity for Apple-related production.

pics?

I really like the boxes they send replacement/repaired watches back in, I use them to store yet more watches. Could go without the plastic wrap, though. Maybe just some tape or a sticker pull tab like the new iPhone boxes post 12.

Eco-friendly is the new way to save costs, but yeah Eco-friendly. Why not stop soldering RAM and SSDs, this would be even Eco-friendlier.
They'd still have to solder the RAM/SSD sockets. And they'd have to add more volume to the devices to make room for the sockets, requiring more materials to construct.

There are a lot of reasons why I'd like upgradable RAM/SSDs in MBPs, but they're not more eco-friendly.

Wow, all this hate for Apple when they use cardboard in packaging. Can Apple do anything right? Geez

Those who get on here just to bash Apple should do something that makes their life happier.

Sure they are more eco-friendly.

When you can upgrade or replace hardware parts, you keep your stuff for longer instead of trashing it, because the RAM, SSD amount or CPU speed does not serve anymore.

It’s called planed obsolescence and green washing done by corporations like Apple.

One board less in Africas Tech Trash Mountains being dissected and molten by poor children without oxygen masks trying to get the reusable materials like copper, gold, etc. out and poisoning themselves.

“Eco friendly packaging” is just PR code for “cheap and easy to obtain”. Likely another step down in quality or quantity of materials that has little “actual” impact on environmental factors (unless you consider the green fields of Apple’s once limitless purse to be part of ‘the environment’). LOL

Apple is far from eco-friendly. This is how much waste came with my Apple Watch 7.

Sssh! Don't shatter the PR illusion! The fact that this packaging is cheaper has absolutely nothing to do with their decision to use it. Zero. Nadda. I also understand that apparently the reason Apple don't add a calculator app to the iPad is it saves on energy consumption. ;)

Of course, it is all good if it can benefit the environment, but don't try and pretend it was the key motivator.

It’s really the same thing Amazon is doing, with their packaging being more ‘eco-friendly’, using less paper products and/or recycled paper product.

How much is this really helping environment? No idea. But ‘A’ for effort.

What kind of packaging would it take to get a @&$#ing new charger included with a new phone?

There’s nothing cheaper* or easier to obtain than not including one at all.

*i mean eco friendly
