So they outsourced the rigorous testing to it's intended user-base...?

This is the mother of all "this is not my job" commentary....

Quite the contrary. It's not possible for any software company to fully test software of this complexity against the thousands of configuration variations. Look what happened to iOS 8. It wasn't fully tested until a wide variety of users were able to put it into action, and then a relatively small percentage experienced problems.

This is a very wise decision on Apple's part. Let those that don't mind finding bugs for them get involved and do it. This will help ensure the bugs are addressed before release to those of us that want quality products and don't want to experience early adopter problems.

Damn, I'm ready to test ZFS or Apple's answer to it any time now! *hint hint wink wink*

ZFS relies on ECC memory so if they adopted it, it would be limited to a mac pro or they'd have to move all their computers to server grade.

I know right!! How dare they send me an email THANKING ME for participating in a totally optional and voluntary program...

frankly, they didn't need to send out an email just for that

what's annoying with Apple is that once they own your email address, they just don't know when to stop harassing us

Anyone that still running the last public beta can confirm that they haven't release an update via the software update mechanism?

I have still running the PB 6. It's still Build 14A388b, no updates available via App-Store yet.

I wonder if Apple will consider iOS public betas in the future.

Let me dual-boot my iPad and I'd consider helping there. :) (I don't understand people who installed the Yosemite Public Betas, good as they fortunately were, on their primary machine on top of their regular OS.)

I think the public beta helped allot. Yosemite is noticeably less buggy than Mavericks at release. Yosemite also made my 2011 base 27" iMac feel faster.

I haven't got the email yet, and I was part of the feedback programme. Then again we are 16 hours ahead here compared to the US. I love beta testing and the best thing was that I never had to use a time machine backup, and no reinstalls ever. Hopefully hear more soon regarding the updates to Yosemite.

Sense of community, senses of what's wrong, right and the best

A disconnect from fellow Public Beta testers (the absence of an Apple-provided forum?) might help to explain the ****ing ugly first impression that 10.10 gives to some people …

The Finder is now creepy.

my 2010 iMac feels pretty crisp too but my Photoshop CS5, esp CS6 feels more sluggish. Anyone know how i can help it run faster? I've fixed permissions etc. CS5 even quit on me a few times. Should I just reinstall my apps?

Really lovely of Apple to continue offering a public beta, I was able to feed my intrigue with Yosemite as it was such a huge, different release. Don't think I'll do it again though, it was mostly just because Yosemite was so radically different and I wanted early access. We'll see, though.

Well, it'd be a nice start if they actually bothered to start at the Mac Pro.

Other than that, I wouldn't mind them moving to ECC RAM, would definitely justify their RAM upgrade prices a bit more for once.

Then again, I also said they could do their own solution, something like HFS+ Advanced/2.0/... whatever you call it, just move to the 21st century with your FS already, Apple.

WIFI woes

Too bad they missed the WiFi issues that people are compiling about.
I would be all over Yosemite but I have a remote login that is crucial to my business. With all the complaints about WiFi and VPN issues circulating I just cannot afford to upgrade.

OS X 10.0 "Kodiak" was Apple's first public beta test, and it cost $29.

I have to say Yosemite is quite stable. Zero issues. Runs fast and smooth.

Yes, it seems to perform better on 2011 hardware than Mavericks. Here's hoping it proves to be the new Snow Leopard - polished and stable.

Ugliest OS X so far, thank you "testers!"

Personal opinion aside, you really think the look of the OS came about because of the testers?

It seems that the appearance was, to a great degree, given to the testers. So I don't blame any tester for the troubles with appearance.

I blame Apple – for bulldozing through some things that are simply wrong.

I wish they responded to feedback about the interface. …

I recently saw a continuity-focused image of four types of Apple device (probably a desktop Mac, notebook Mac, iPad and iPhone) in an array, all with the same content. Something like this –

– but the image that I recall was much slicker. Extremely impressive. Continuity is to be welcomed, but a little of what Apple has done is seriously regressive for some Mac users. It seems that trendiness was deemed more important than a first class user experience (UX).

So they outsourced the rigorous testing to it's intended user-base...? …

… iOS has such a massive market with non-tech savy users. …

If you have a Mac, the odds are greater that you know what the beta is and is for.

Possibly. But an open invitation to beta testing probably resulted in a majority being not tech-savvy. (To the truly tech-savvy readers of this post: apologies for that generalisation. Don't take it personally.)

Apple's wisdom around testing is not a recent development. The test wisdom became great towards the end of the twentieth century …

No updates either here, other than Xcode. Really don't want to go through the full upgrade process again. Took long enough the first time...
